Why We Like The Therm-a-Rest Vesper Quilt

The Therm-a-Rest Vesper Quilt replaces our bulkier, heavier sleeping bags on minimalist-minded, summery backpacking trips. It weighs a little less than a pound, and can pack down to the size of a water bottle. Therm-a-Rest used down insulation with the highest rill rating (900) to ensure the loftiest warmth and the smallest compressibility. This down also boasts a Nikwax hydrophobic treatment to retain its lofty warmth in moisture-riddled environments.

Technical marvel, its a work of engineering art.

The workman ship on this bag is amazing. It's ultralight weight and needs to be taken care of. As long as you are not horrendous on your gear this will last a number of seasons. I don't like how Thermarest doesn't really support their own synergy link straps on their own 25 inch wide pads. Personally, I'd love to commission a Thermarest ultra lite Synergy quilt to attach the vesper, the liner and the 25 inch synergy sheet to a 25 inch pad. I've used this bag down to 36 but dressed in appropriate thermals and the synergy lite sheet on a 25 inch neoair xlite. Great 3-season fast & Super light and compact I'm 5' 10" and built like a rectangle and am very cozy in the regular size.

Super light and compact

This quilt packs remarkably small and is warm enough down to mid/low 40's. Great 3-season fast & light solution. Long johns, light puffy and cap will allow some to sleep to rated 32F with a good pad. I like the toe box that keeps the quilt in place down low. Simple straps around mat keep the rest in place. Good width to cover sides of mat, but active sleepers will open gaps in the sides which may let cold air in. Also needs a good shake to distribute the down in the baffles to avoid cold spots. No hood - you need to bring a cap to keep head warm. I'm 5' 10" and couldn't quite wrap the top of the quilt around my head.

Vesper32🔥

I recently took my Vesper32 Quilt with me for 8 days of back country backpacking in South Sierra Wilderness (June '23). Waking up at first morning with temperature at 9350' elevation was 31° and I was very comfortable and warm throughout the night with mummy bag (from another company)and my Vesper. I already have a 40° mummy bag but I felt a top quilt was going to be needed, since there was still snow patches where we were going to be camping at...and weather forecast of nightly Temps in the low to mid 30's. Extremely happy with my purchase! I did notice that throughout the week a few feathers had managed to pop out of the quilt at various spots, but only a few. However to me this was minor, and probably could be due to the amount of handling I was putting the quilt through...I basically broke down my sleeping system daily and packed it up for daily hiking. As the week progressed i experimented with using just a quilt and one pad (a Nemo switchback) to see if I could survive one night in those temps and stay warm and surprisingly i was! I am confident that if all you have is a quilt and a decent pad you should be able stay warm on any night near the comfort rating Thermarest has given to your bag/ quilt (my nightly attire consisted of one pair darntough midweight socks, a smartwool merino top, rei merino pants and a northface hooded fleece.). 10 out of 10 would recommend to a friend. 10 out of 10 would buy again if I absolutely had to!!

Able to shed heat wonderfully

I have only had the chance to utilize this bag once and it was a truck camping night in 33 degree weather. I had a nice sleeping pad and another blanket and human next to me so I was comfy cozy. In the morning my partner was cold and I was not, what a role reversal that was! I'm excited for chilly summer nights.

Nice, but could use a Wide version

I’ve been using this quilt since it first came out, and mostly like it for overnight and summer wknd trips. It’s well-made, and keeps most of the stitching, other than the baffles, on the inside of the bag. It’s a clean, simple design, that works. I haven’t come close to testing it temp rating, but I wouldn’t want to get much close to freezing in just a quilt. I do wish that they’d release a wider size of this ultralight sack tho. It does have tendency to let drafts in around my stomach and shoulders if I’m not lying perfectly on my back. A couple more inches would really help keep it tucked, especially for those of us who like to sleep on our sides.

Featherweight, super warm

I love this thing and if I had to do it over, would buy the exact same thing. If I decide to get another quilt for different temps, I will shop Vespers first.

Amazing

Waaaaaay better than a sleeping bag. No way back after trying a quilt paired with a good sleeping mat.

The jury?s still out.

I've used it several times

Pulled it out of the box and held it up to a window and every compartment was only half full. Called Thermarest Custy Serv & got a really great guy... cold dryer, tennis balls, vigorous (but not violent) shaking and a lot of pinching and pulling the clusters and voila! Just barely full compartments. Tested on back porch on a night with dropping temps wearing long underwear, a super thick winter hat, and and using an R5 winter pad. It?s toasty warm all through the 40?s but then after that it falls off a cliff... at 4 am & 36*F I was too cold to even think about sleeping and went inside. Tried again another night inside a SOL thermolite bivi, same clothes, same hat, super warm, zero condensation inside, sopping wet dew all round my yard. Thermally great but back to the inconvenience of a sausage casing survival style sleep system. PROS: 1) Best fitting foot box ever. 2) perimeter baffle is fantastic-seals super well 3) neck collar/drawstring best of any quilt and on par with my custom hand made winter bag. 4) The shell fabric just awesome in every way. CONS: 1) The pad straps fall off way too easily & are not very useful side sleeping with knees bent. 2) when you add the weight of winter hat winter pad, & bivi sack there is ZERO weight savings for me but even with the extras it is super compact somthing I really like a lot. MY BOTTOM LINE FOR NOW: buy the 20*F version there just isn?t enough down in the 32*F model to make sense or work like it should; It?s a fantastic shell design that?s undermined by being underfilled.

An excellent option

I've used this as a second layer to increase the warmth of my existing 15 degree bag. It's excellent. And it's small and easy to pack.
