Ditch the bag, and go with the quilt.

Spend summers camping out of your car or backpacking across the the plains with Therm-a-Rest's Vela Quilt keeping you warm at night. It's far roomier than any sleeping bag, and 650-fill down insulation gives that light and lofty warmth we've all grown to love. Therm-a-Rest treated the Vela's down with Nikwax to help the insulation retain its lofty warmth in moisture-riddled tents and cars. The shell has a water-resistant treatment for extra wet weather protection.

The Vela features an elasticized footbox and full-perimeter side baffles to prevent drafts from coming in and your legs from slipping out. The loop kit and snap loops attach to Therm-a-Rest's sleeping pads, sleeping bags, blankets, sheets, or another Vela Quilt. There's an external snap pocket to keep essentials close, and Therm-a-Rest included stuff and storage sacks. The Vela Quilt comes in sizes suitable for solo backpacking and camping couples.

    Extra Comfort

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I agree with other reviewers that this would not be comfortable with two people without the complimentary pads. However, I do like it as a blanket in warmer weather, or an extra layer over me on colder nights.

This is Your Sign to Get This

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This bag is amazing! I was looking for a bag that was a little larger so I would be able to have a comfortable 'blanket' for sleeping in a hammock. This bag has a larger entrance so getting in and out of a hammock was a breeze. If I decided to get a pad to go with this, it would suit perfectly for its holder sleeves to stay in place. Had a sprinkle when I went, I was lucky to have this bag with DWR as it covered a short rain. Of course, the bag is a bit bigger, it will pack bigger but with the perks, it doesn't matter. This bag is awesome!!

Nice warm weather quilt if used properly

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This quilt is great if used with the correct sleeping pads. The photo shown is actually the quilt on top of the optional Therm-a-Rest Down Coupler which is enclosing two rectangular sleeping pads. The quilt is made to wrap around the edges of the two sleeping pads, which then keeps it in place. The Double Quilt is not easy to use with two people and one will end up with the quilt with the other out in the cold. So with the proper use it's great but make sure it fits your sleeping pad(s).

    Great Quilt

I've really liked this quilt. I think it's a great alternative to a sleeping bag, and it works seamlessly with Thermarest pads. I've also used the quilt as an extra layer for my sleeping bag on really cold nights.

      Love it!

Best sleeping system so far. I used this quilt with the large neoair camper and the fitted sheet on a week long float trip down the Middlefork of the Salmon river last week. I have owned and used 3 different thermarest pads, 2 different cots, poco pads and multiple sleeping bags of different sizes and shapes. The first night was in the low 30s and the last two nights in the 50s. I was very comfortable every night. The quilt was very easy to attach to the pad and did not move on the cold nights. On the really warm nights you just pull it off to the side. The whole system is fairly light and compact. I was able to leave a large dry bag at home. I really loved not feeling restricted and not getting twisted up in a sleeping bag. It was great in the middle of the night, when nature calls, to just roll out and back in with out messing with the sleeping bag zipper. Some of the best gear I have purchased in a long time.

      Pretty neat

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

When any down is compressed, it looses the insulation capabilities. The concept behind this quilt is to remove that unnecessary layer of down on the bottom of the sleeping bag which is normally compressed. This thing is super light and compressible for a 2p bag because of that. For it to stay in place like a double sleeping bag, one needs to purchase 2 identical thermarest sleeping pads. This made it a challenge when our sleeping pads were not the correct size, as they did not stay in place underneath us.

I've used sleeping bags forever, and while hammock camping is great, getting in and out of the hammock while also trying to get in your sleeping bag can be difficult. This quilt is the answer, not only was it super comfy it is much easier to get in and out of. The bottom has a great elastic band that wraps around your pad and won't move in the night. There are no zippers so getting in and out is quiet and super easy, just like your bed at home. I slept in my hammock in the snow and the temps were around 22F and I was not cold at all. I will never use a sleeping bag again while in my hammock! Perfect!

I doubt the temperature rating of this product. I tried it on a 40-45 degree night, and I was very cold, despite being fully dressed with a down jacket and wool socks.

However, if you only need a quilt for 50+ degrees, this would be a good choice.

For my purposes, it didn't work so well, and I've since purchased a $400 custom quilt.
