    Air and foam come together.

Foam pads are comfy and cushy for camping trips, whereas air pads are compressible and light for backpacking; lucky for you, Therm-a-Rest made the BaseCamp AF Sleeping Pad with self-inflating air tubes and foam panels for the best of both worlds. AirFrame construction alternates these tubes and panels to amplify cushy loft without inhibiting the pad's weight or overall compression.

    Better than a bed

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a great sleeping pad. These foam/pneumatic pads are better than a bed. I use my Thermarest pads as a replacement for a bed. Sounds crazy? Let me tell you a little story.
I used to live in Colorado, near the foothills of the Rocky mountains. One very cold January high winds blew the power lines down. I had no heat for 36 hours. My conventional mattress and box springs had no insulation to withstand the cold. My apartment temperature plunged to 50° F. I switched to Foam sleeping pads. I slept warmer and more comfortably than on some $600.00 "sleep system. I used a Thermarest trail lite with a Z-fold pad for years and it worked great. I decided to upgrade to this Thermarest pad.
Don't waste your money on an expensive conventional bed. Get one of these pads and save a ton of money.

    Super comfy and light enough

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Always a tradeoff between ultralight pads and one that doesnt protect you well enough from either cold or pointy objects. This pad was awesome while camping in low teens weather and kept me toasty from below. Thankfully the ground I was on did not have rocks or roots to worry about so i can't speak about the cushioning but the combo design of foam and air seems to gives the best of adequate protection while saving on the weight. Love this pad!
