Start trail running earlier in the season.

The North Face Men's Ultra 109 GTX Trail Running Shoe handles trails even when they're still snowy so you can get your running sessions in at the start of spring. Gore-Tex Extended Comfort Range gives this neutral shoe guaranteed waterproof protection that's also highly breathable, and the lightweight mesh upper is reinforced with PU-coated leather for longevity. The compression-molded EVA midsole makes this shoe comfortable enough for day-hiking and short backpacking trips. The North Face also added a TPU toe cap for protection, an ESS midfoot shank for torsional stability and light pronation control, and a TPU Snake Plate at the forefoot for even more stability. UltrAtac rubber covers the sole to help you stay on your feet over icy surfaces.

    Great shoes!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I have flat feet, and I also have trouble finding shoes that don't take forever to break in and be comfortable. These shoes eliminate both issues entirely. They're extremely comfortable straight out of the box, with great support. I have had them before, and they're the only kind that truly fill the bill for me. I wear them for miles and miles of walking with my dog (and doing almost everything else).

These north face shoes are one of my favorite they fit so good on my feet and they feel so good since I am always on my feet feels like I am on air thanks North Face very satisfied

    Except one thing.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Tried these on in house and walked around, no problem. Took them out for a run to break them in and found a pressure point causing a tiny bruise on bottom ankle bone. Very disappointed. There is a bump you can feel running your finger along the top, about an inch behind last eyelet. So I'm going to say poor design, the part that comes to close to the ankle bone should be soft or not come at all close to the bone. Now that I have studied the area it is very hard.

Comfortable, but has a major DESIGN FLAW

I purchase these shoes approximately one-year ago after reading a lot of positive reviews, and these light hiking shoes performed well in a variety of conditions. For example, I was in the Okavango Delta of Botswana during 40+ hours of continuous downpour rain and these comfortable shoes kept my feet completely dry. I was impressed. I thought I had found the perfect waterproof hiking shoes. Unfortunately, there is a major DESIGN FLAW I discovered while hiking the Routeburn Track in New Zealand recently.

DESIGN FLAW: The rigid rubber toe-cap rubs against the Gore Tex membrane where the shoe flexes and eventually wears a hole through the exterior webbing and the interior Gore Tex membrane. Fortunately, The North Face replaced my Ultra 109 GTX shoes with a new pair. Nevertheless, I sent the new pair back to TNF because of this design flaw. They accepted my return and issued a gift card. TNF is an awesome company.

Retailers should stop selling this defectively-designed shoe. I suggest looking at the new Hedgehog model because it doesn't have the rigid, rubber toe-cap of the GTX 109, and I assume it incorporates all of the good features of the GTX 109. However, I don't have first-hand knowledge or evidence to substantiate this assumption.

Most comfortable running shoe I've ever tried.

I tend to have very moist feet so have fought blistering on arch and toes in other runners, which really kept me from getting into running until now. With these I feel like my running is no longer limited by my feet and can push as long or hard as my cardio will allow. The padding on these is on the firmer side of what I'd tried in the past and has really limited rubbing with each strike.

Typically more of a hiker. I now do a 3 mi. out and back mixed (packed dirt to full volcanic rock) trail run with some pretty steep sections 1-2 times a week at this point (~10min pace run average) with an occasional ~5 mi. street run near my house on the weekend.

Stable with great traction on all terrain I've encountered (can't speak to snow or ice in these but imagine they would do well and handle microspikes better than a standard runner)

Right balance of cushioning to support for me

Flexes well like a runner needs to but provides great protection too

Has performed well on concrete, asphalt, dirt track, grass, mixed trails. I generally try to keep the out of deeper (anything deep enough to come up the sides) mud just because I hate cleaning all the knobby tread which holds a lot of mud.

These have been great specifically for the trail I run which can be very rocky, loose, and steep in sections. The shoes have a large platform for stability and has kept me on my feet even running by headlamp and feel before sunrise. The soles provide great protection against rocks (both toe and under foot)while still flexing naturally with my gait and strike. The sole feels neutral throughout contact without excessive arch cushioning.

After about 50 mi on them the insoles seems to have lost some additional cushion from new and I may look to see if NF sells a direct replacement insole. This pre-mature wear isn't all that uncommon for me though, given my weight (~185lbs), I have to replace my road bike tires pretty frequently as well due to wear from the same. If not available I'll look into a trim to fit replacement insole.

    Trail shoes

These shoes are really nice for everything including everyday walking, running, and hiking. They are a stiffer shoe than the last Salomon trail running shoes I had and are a bit more burly. Great for trails and could even be a lightweight backpacking shoe. The gore tex and material around the toe is nice for keeping water out on wetter days. I recommend them!
