    Take it everywhere.

From the campsite to downtown, The North Face's Thermoball Hooded Insulated Jacket is a warm layer that performs well in most situations. Synthetic Thermoball insulation mimics the packability and loft of down, except it stays warm if it happens to get wet, which would be a challenge since The North Face treated the jacket's shell with a DWR treatment. A slim fit layers the jacket under a shell jacket comfortably when skiing or snowboarding, and tightening the hem cinch blocks out the chilly weather to help keep your core warm. If you find yourself needing to pack the jacket away, you can stow it in its own hand pocket for convenient, simple storage.

    • A synthetic insulated jacket for cold days at camp or downtown
    • Thermoball insulation mimics packability and warmth of down
    • DWR treated nylon shell resists rain and snow
    • Slim fit easily layers under a ski jacket or shell.
    • Block out snow or cold wind with the hem cinch cord
    • Packs down and stows in hand pocket

    North Face Quality and Warmth

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 210lbs

I love this North face jacket as a mid layer on colder days. This jacket is very warm and is very high quality. The down filling is the perfect amount and can even be worn as an outer-layer out on the town when the temperature is near freezing. Highly recommend this!

    New fit smaller, didn't fit

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

These are great jackets. Have owned 5 of them, 2 of which I still wear. The warmth of (lame) down but can get wet and can be washed with less damage. Nevertheless, of course they lose their loft over many wash cycles. That's how I've destroyed 3 of them over the past 3 years: by washing so many times. Definitely thinner than most down jackets, but can be layered really well!

    Nice, Athletic Fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'3"
    • Weight: 190lbs

Comparing this item with the Nano Puff after owning both, I think I prefer the thermoball to the nanopuff. The jacket feels a little more rigid in construction, and the fit particularly around the stomach is a little tighter and more athletic. I think this jacket is warm and nice and I would definitely get it again. I am 6'3 and 190 and It fits really snug but not too snug. I could easily have gotten and worn the XL too. I would say it does run slightly large, but order your standard size.

    Loving the New Design

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'4"
    • Weight: 190lbs

I've always been a fan of the Thermoball Jacket and I really love the way they redid the baffles so the fill doesn't move around as easily. This is a perfect mid-layer for active pursuits and it's still stylish enough to be worn to the office or out on the town.

    Nice

Very nice down jacket. A little more casual than performance oriented. Seems pretty durable and material does not seem like it will rip easily. The only reason I give it 4 not 5 stars is the cuffs. They do not have elastic so they kind of hang over your wrist which can be a bit annoying when trying to do any sort of work in it outside of casual wear.

Not like they used to be

I have owned thermoball jackets for years and ordered this one to replace my old wore out one. I bought a medium like before and it fits nothing even close to how my old one fits. The size and make is definitely different and I would need a larger size. The shoulder area is very restrictive and the waist was tight. I am 5’ 8” and 180lbs and will be sending this jacket back. Disappointed they changed their cut/sew pattern on what used to be my favorite jacket. Still unsure if I’ll try a large or just a different brand.

        Versatile and Warm

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size
        • Height: 5'10"
        • Weight: 175lbs

This jacket is surprisingly warm. It doesn't look nearly as warm as it really is when you put it on. Perfect for those shoulder season days in the Fall and Spring where you need some warmth but need to still be able to move around. Would work just as well around an early morning campfire as it would running errands around town. My only complaint is that the fit is a tad on the boxy side.

        Great active layer!

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Large
        • Height: 6'2"
        • Weight: 175lbs

Just used this on a November Cataract Canyon rafting trip on the Colorado River.

It's a great layering piece for active wear in the cold! Keeps you warm, but allows for good venting when you're working for it.
I wouldn't recommend as a casual wear piece in cold weather, as it doesn't trap a lot of heat on it's own when you're just standing or sitting around. Pair with a base layer and a fleece and you have an exceptional layering system for cold weather environments!

Tricky for us wide shoulder boys

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: Runs large
        • Height: 6'3"
        • Weight: 190lbs

Great coat easy to throw on and run out the door. Can be worn formally or just to lounge in! Had to size up so I could get more shoulder room but now it seems too much. Oh well! I'll give it great reviews none-the-less!

Love it! Seriously one of my favorites

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: Runs large
        • Size Bought: Large
        • Height: 6'2"
        • Weight: 240lbs

It is a bit heavier than most hi-loft down jackets but makes up for it in the price and warmth! I had no complaints at all!
If you want a warm jacket but don't want to look like the Michelin Man or Pillsbury dough boy this is the jacket for you! I found it to fit a little bigger than a normal large would but that allowed me to add layers underneath!
All in all a great purchase!

        First Insulated jacket

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Large
        • Height: 6'2"
        • Weight: 165lbs

I've never owned an insulated jacket before and wanted to make a right decision. I chose North Face because they are a solid company in general, plus, this looked like a pretty cool jacket. People said it ran slightly large, I am a large so I ordered medium however that was a little tight for me so it runs true to size. The jacket is instantly warm, the sleeves are the right length, the hood blocks out wind when its put on, and it comes in real nice colours. My first insulated jacket and its a solid one. My moms North Face jacket has lasted her 5 years and I'm planning this will do the same.

        Great Warm Jacket

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: XL and XXL

I got this for my Grandpa for his birthday and he absolutely loved it!! He loved that it is lightweight but still warm. He liked the sleeves and all the pockets. He has been very warm in it and is stoked to wear it all winter long.

The jacket fit true to size, but I ended up sizing up so it was a little looser and had more room to layer under it. Since it is a slim fit sizing up was necessary so it wasn't as tight.

        Very Comfortable Jacket

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: XXL
        • Height: 5'10"
        • Weight: 260lbs

I love this jacket that I just got! It fits well, true to size, is very warm and confortable.

Failed second time I wore it.

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Xl
        • Height: 6'1"
        • Weight: 230lbs

The second time I wore the jacket the pocket seam came apart and my keys dropped through the hole. I had to sew the seam to fix it.... disappointed.

        Pretty Solid Jacket

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: Runs large
        • Size Bought: Small
        • Height: 5'10"
        • Weight: 135lbs

Okay first of all, this jacket is awesome. I really love it. But it does have some faults. The biggest fault is the fit: I'm an average height and weight (Usually wear medium in everything) so I ordered a medium. It came and was way too big around the chest but the right length on the torso and arms. So I exchangd it for a small (backcountry was really easy and helpful in the process) which fits much better. But the length of the torso is just a little bit short which is weird. Overall I can deal with that. I would say probably order a size under what you normally wear. Aside from hat, this jacket is great. It's a super warm, super light, and super comfortable. Yeah, definitely a great purchase.

        Warm transitional jacket

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: XL
        • Height: 6'1"
        • Weight: 200lbs

I really like this jacket for the lighter weather days of winter and the harsh transitional days in the fall and spring. It is a nice lighter jacket for snowshoeing and shoveling all that white stuff as well. The arm cuffs on The North Face thermoball jackets are a little different but I like it better that the typical elastic band of fabric at the end of the sleeves. I don't notice any drafts with them. Overall, it is a great lightweight jacket for facing the winter cold and the extremes of fall and spring.

        Best of the best!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: L
        • Height: 5'9"
        • Weight: 190lbs

A perfect first midlayer. I wear the hood under my helmet. If it’s cold enough I wear a down second midlayer then a Powder Guide Jacket or a Triclimate Snow Jacket with its liner. I’d give the ThermoBall Hoodie 6 stars if I could!

        Not even warm

Love the camo look. Very lightweight. Sending it back. Tried it out tonight just walking the dog in almost no wind and 33F. T-shirt underneath. Not warm at all. Perhaps TNF thermoball is just a frat boy status symbol. Even on sale,I can’t abide this.

Yeah, I agree. I just got mine and it isnt as warm as people say it is. I think its perfect for weather above 32 degrees but would need a nice fleece sweater under to help out. I wouldnt get an expensive north face fleece though. A columbia fleece will do the trick.

Do other reviewers even live in an area that gets cold, wintry weather?
Maybe if the person is active outdoors is the jacket warm But when you're using the jacket as an outer winter jacket while walking around, THAT is the important thing... how it's 'normally' used!
Thanks for pointing out that the Thermoball Jacket is NOT meant for cold, winter wear especially as an outer layer!

Pretty great jacket, size is def off!

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times
          • Fit: Runs large
          • Size Bought: Medium
          • Height: 6'1"
          • Weight: 200lbs

Love the coat. Have a couple other brands of packable jackets but needed a hooded version. Picked this up at a pretty good price during the spring sale. Main thing is, I’m 6’1” 200 lbs and wear a large in every other coat like this I have. Had to send the large back for a medium. As much as I would like to be a medium, I am not! Anyway, the medium is a great fit and I love the coat. Wear this style of coat all the time. Water resistant, warm, lightweight. Great for traveling when you don’t want to pack a bulky coat but need something for cold rainy locales.

Is it really warm enough to wear in cold wintry weather?
Many reviews state that wind cuts through due to the design of threads through jacket!
It will mainly be used as outer layer.
