    Don't leave home without it.

Whether you're car camping in the fall or riding the resort midwinter, The North Face's Men's ThermoBall Hooded Insulated Jacket offers welcome warmth when you need it most. The DWR treated nylon shell repels wind and rain, so you can wear this puffy on its own or layer it under your ski jacket. The ThermoBall jacket features PrimaLoft ThermoBall insulation that retains warmth when it gets wet, which is a saving grace in moist Northwest climates. The hood offers extra protection when the winds pick up, and secure-zip hand pockets are the perfect spot to stash some chocolate for a chairlift snack.

Failed second time I wore it.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Xl
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 230lbs

The second time I wore the jacket the pocket seam came apart and my keys dropped through the hole. I had to sew the seam to fix it.... disappointed.

    Pretty Solid Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 135lbs

Okay first of all, this jacket is awesome. I really love it. But it does have some faults. The biggest fault is the fit: I'm an average height and weight (Usually wear medium in everything) so I ordered a medium. It came and was way too big around the chest but the right length on the torso and arms. So I exchangd it for a small (backcountry was really easy and helpful in the process) which fits much better. But the length of the torso is just a little bit short which is weird. Overall I can deal with that. I would say probably order a size under what you normally wear. Aside from hat, this jacket is great. It's a super warm, super light, and super comfortable. Yeah, definitely a great purchase.

    Warm transitional jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 200lbs

I really like this jacket for the lighter weather days of winter and the harsh transitional days in the fall and spring. It is a nice lighter jacket for snowshoeing and shoveling all that white stuff as well. The arm cuffs on The North Face thermoball jackets are a little different but I like it better that the typical elastic band of fabric at the end of the sleeves. I don't notice any drafts with them. Overall, it is a great lightweight jacket for facing the winter cold and the extremes of fall and spring.

    Best of the best!

A perfect first midlayer. I wear the hood under my helmet. If it’s cold enough I wear a down second midlayer then a Powder Guide Jacket or a Triclimate Snow Jacket with its liner. I’d give the ThermoBall Hoodie 6 stars if I could!

    Not even warm

Love the camo look. Very lightweight. Sending it back. Tried it out tonight just walking the dog in almost no wind and 33F. T-shirt underneath. Not warm at all. Perhaps TNF thermoball is just a frat boy status symbol. Even on sale,I can’t abide this.

Pretty great jacket, size is def off!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 6'1"
      • Weight: 200lbs

Love the coat. Have a couple other brands of packable jackets but needed a hooded version. Picked this up at a pretty good price during the spring sale. Main thing is, I’m 6’1” 200 lbs and wear a large in every other coat like this I have. Had to send the large back for a medium. As much as I would like to be a medium, I am not! Anyway, the medium is a great fit and I love the coat. Wear this style of coat all the time. Water resistant, warm, lightweight. Great for traveling when you don’t want to pack a bulky coat but need something for cold rainy locales.

      Beats expectations

This is a wonderful, light weight jacket, perfect for the long distance hiker. Folds into a nice pillow as well.
My only concern was a part of the stitching at the wrist started to fray. I tied the thread to stop continued fraying.

Had this in black and it's one of my "go to" jackets. It seems to keep me at the right temperature whether it's 30 degrees or 50 degrees!

Not true to size as described

      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 5'9"
      • Weight: 160lbs

I ordered medium as I always wear medium size on jacket. This jacket comes even bigger than my normal large size. Unfortunately, I have to return it and I find out that I have to pay the shipping fee even it's not my fault and I return the merchandise within time frame of two days after receiving it.
Lesson learned is if you want to buy clothes online, find a place where you do not need to pay shipping fee if the merchandise does not come as described. Such as Amazon. I will stay away from this site.

Some constructive feedback, perhaps you should have read the return policy before buying the product online.

Backcountry has one of the most reasonable return policies online for an outdoor company that sells such a great variety of quality gear. Many other online outdoor retailers make you arrange the return shipping on your own, including responsibility for tracking, cost, and insuring arrival.

I have ordered several items through backcountry, and have never had issues with returns. With climbing gear specifically, there are some items you cannot return due to safety reasons.

Overall, I have found backcountry.com returns to be very straight foward, convenient , and easy to track. Its a shame you had a poor experience, just don't forget to read their policies before you get upset about a return.

      Very comfy, slightly small

      • Fit: Runs small

This thing is really great. I'm a tall slim guy that always wears M, but this jacket has tightness on the chest and is a bit too tight on the waist. I'm afraid a L will be too big. I still love it and will wear it a lot.

      Great jacket

      • Fit: Runs large
      • Height: 5'9"

Great jacket. Works perfect as a layer or on its own. Runs a little bit large, with longer sleeves.

      no hood closure

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: medium
      • Height: 5'8"
      • Weight: 170lbs

I have an older model I used for a thru hike of the pct as my warmest layer, and it kept me warm for cold desert nights, wind in the Sierras, and getting soaked by rain in the Cascades. I finally managed to ruin it by melting it near a wood stove and went looking for a replacement, but unfortunately the newer model seems to be for casual use. The looser fit is good for layering and wider shoulders, but will slide around and bunch up with a heavier backpack, especially with hip straps. The deal breaker for me was the hood; without a way to cinch the hood closed, good luck keeping it on while walking into a strong wind.

      Awesome Jacket

      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: XXL
      • Height: 6'2"
      • Weight: 210lbs

Overall a super awesome jacket that keeps me warm no matter what, even with just one layer under. I use this jacket skiing, around the city, and during cold nights when camping usually. Ordered an XXL and the only thing I have to say is that it's a bit wide for my preferred fit but that's just me wanting a slimmer fit usually. Gonna keep this thing as long as I possibly can!

      Like it a lot.

So many outdoor companies think everyone is boxy or wants to layer only in the midsection. TNF is usually one of those for me. I am 6 foot 170 lbs with long arms and a medium is great. I can wear a base-layer comfortably but usually find myself in a t shirt or flannel underneath. Great daily jacket and have been super comfortable in 10-20 degree around the city conditions.

      Nice piece!

My son loves this coat! Keeps him warm and looks great! Very functional jacket. Been on hikes to frozen lake, late night ball games, school and strolling the streets in our mountain town.

      Perfect

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large

Simply the perfect jacket on its own or as a layer. Incredibly lightweight, beautiful color and warm. I have long arms so I bought the men’s jacket in a smaller size and the fit is a tiny bit too large but still looks good!

      Unanswered Question

Can the thermoball actually, truly be worn in cold, wintry weather as an outer layer?
I've read many other reviews from online backbacking & outdoor activity websites that state it's NOT meant for cold, wintry wear esp. as on outer layer. The waffle design lets in the cold and does Not block the wind. For warmth, a Down version would be better. Similar to the Patagonia versions.
Each type is designed for different purposes.
      Synthetics vs down products debate...
Synthetic for relatively warmer temps and dries more quickly
Down for warmth and blocks wind but doesn't dry as quickly.
Either can be worn as an insulation layer underneath a shell or insulated jacket/parka for additional warmth.
      Thanks!
