Perfect jacket with no extra's
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Fit: True to size
- Height: 5'8"
- Weight: 145lbs
This jacket is exactly what you need and nothing more. Minimal pockets and added features keep the overall weight of this jacket low. The 3 layer Gore-tex and cut of this jacket will handle any and all conditions you throw at it. If you want some side pockets for your hands, go with a different jacket.
NO HAND POCKETS
Itâs an amazing jacket! I love it, Definitely keeps you dry in rainy weather. Overall great. I had a problem with it not having front hand pockets, It keeps you dry but your hands have not place for warmth.
My Go-To Gortex Alpine Shell. LOVE IT!

TNF Summit L5 GTX Jacket is my Go-To Alpine/Mountaineering companion and work horse. I have used it all over the Cascades and Olympic Mountains in Washington. It's extremely durable, very light and very packable. I LOVE this GTX hard Shell. I feel that this jacket is misrepresented in the Backcountry "recommended use" description. For me, This jacket not a backcountry skiing/snowboarding jacket, but a nonsense Alpine/ Mountaineering shell. The cut on this jacket is exactly the way I love it - regular, and just enough to layer mid levels underneath. The huge chest pockets are the most practical features I've seen of any other jackets. Typically, I use Arc'teryx and Patagonia Alpine/ Mountaineering/Expedition Gortex shells, however from my experience this past year, The North Face Summit Series alpine climbing apparel lineup surpassed most other technical apparel makers . This TNF L5 Summit GTX shell rivals if not exceeds the products of the other two companies I've mentioned, finally bringing the power of "technical innovation" back into their Summit Series product line. Initially, I purchased the "NTF Black/Canary Yellow" jacket. After several trips into the Cascades, WA, I loved it so much that I then followed up and purchase the "Fiery Red" color, as well. After numerous years suffering on the alpine mountaineering apparel front, TNF has bounced back with the some of the best products on the market. I LOVE this jacket, and would recommend it to whomever is a mountaineer or alpinist. KEEP IT UP HORTH FACE!!!
One of the best winter shells out there!
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: Large
- Height: 6'0"
- Weight: 190lbs
I bought this as a present for my Dad's 60th Birthday! He loves it. He is an avid adventurer and especially love winter. He does a lot of snowshoeing and backcountry skiing. He says it is great for layering and it is definitely water proof. It has everything you need in a shell. Great venting, breathable, good fit and good pockets.
I will say the jacket fits more loose. I originally ordered my dad an XL. It fit but was a little to baggy in the back. I exchanged it for a L that fit much better. The jacket was loose but not baggy looking.
Hand pockets, please.

Tried this on at the TNF store in Union Square (SF, not NY) the other day. I have a TNF Summit shell from 2007/08 that I still wear snowboarding in more extreme conditions, because in all that time I have yet to find anything better (TNF didn’t even bother to offer a legit snow sports option last year).
This new Summit L5 fell short of expectations. While I will say that, unlike most recent TNF offerings, at least they’ve got the sizing right with this one and it does feel like a solid, durable piece, there are two major issues I can’t get past.
First, no hand pockets. My Summit shell has them (granted, their placement is somewhat awkward to allow use with a pack, but at least there are pockets) and I can’t replace that shell with one that doesn’t - especially at this price.
Second, this shell has a fixed, non-stashable hood. The hood on my Summit shell zips off and, since I rarely ride with a hood and don’t use that shell for rain (have two rain shells for that), I don’t need the hood most of the time, and it often gets in the way.
In terms of quality, most TNF gear has fallen off significantly in the past decade as TNF has become more a fashion brand and less a serious outdoor apparrel manufacturer. It’s good to see the Summit Series still keeps it real.
Unfortunately, TNF has failed here to think this piece through adequately, and so I can’t justify the expenditure. I went with an OR Igneo jacket, and I’m very happy with both the product and the price.
