    McMurdo Hooded Down Parka III

Arm yourself against blasts of arctic air and raging blizzards this winter with the quintessential cold-weather protection of The North Face McMurdo Hooded Down Parka III. Packing warmth when the city turns to a frozen pop in the midst of single-digit temps, the McMurdo Hooded Down Parka III features 550-fill down insulation for high-loft warmth. Not only does the down insulation maintain high levels of warmth in the frigid cold, but it brings a luxuriously padded feel to your everyday commute and around-town errands.

When snowstorms barrel down on your city, the DryVent 2-layer membrane seals out wind-driven snow squalls from soaking through and compromising your warmth. Classic parka styling sits a bit longer to keep you warm and dry, especially in downright nasty winter conditions. The zip-off hood provides greater versatility for widely variable conditions, and it's packing an emergency gaiter for sealing out nasty weather.

    Works for me!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: XL

I was looking for a warm coat. That was my number 1 priority. This coat is warm, but not too warm for me (Missouri winter seasons). Yes, the coat is a little bulky. It is like wearing a down comforter. But that is also what makes it so cozy and warm. I was good to go with an undershirt, and a polo, with this coat in 9 degree temps. Yes, the zipper is a little cumbersome. But you will get used to it. Perhaps, the coat may not be quite as stylish as others, but what I really wanted was a nice warm coat, and that's what this is. I am 6'2", 220lbs and got the XL. It fits just ever so slightly large, but I am good with it. I don't think you are going to find a warmer coat for the money.

    Powerful Parka

Well constructed and extremely warm. Goes to mid-thigh for added warmth. Warmest coat I’ve ever owned.

    Great Purchase! Fantastic Coat!

Almost talked myself out of this jacket initially based on reading some of the reviews, after purchasing Im glad I didn’t listen to the lower rated ones. I was looking at a Fjallraven or Canadian Goose but kept getting caught up on price. I did some research, I wanted a Parka that extended past my waist so I looked up “warmest Mens parka”, to my surprise the McMurdo was rated second in three trials and 3rd in another one. Can find the links again if needed. It even beat out the three other coats I was looking at that are about $300 more. So I pulled the triggered and got it.

First! the only issue I have is with the zipper, being a Parka the coats zipper falls past your waist and it’s a tough angle to get and there is a certain technique to it. Initially it would take me a few tries to get but now I figured out how to get it and have no issues.

To me the XL is great, I have a 32 waist so it’ s not tight and routinely wear sweatshirts underneath. It is a Parka, to those reading this and then reading other reviewers I believe you lose some movement because tha€t’s the type of jacket. Yes it’s tough to lift my arms above my head, but I didn’t buy this coat for activities that require that.

There are 6 pocket and an interior electionrics pocket with headphone wire opening. Not sure how many more you need.

The hood cover my head fine, especially if the pull the cord to tighten in back of hood.

Again maybe it’s my liking, but there is no drawstring but have yet to feel wind come the bottom, if you have a big stomach though I could see this happening though.

The sleeves for me same size coat are fine, if your looking for active use I would not recommend besides light hiking, daily use or walks.

In general I’m happy with coat, it’s the warmest coat I’ve had.

    Great Purchase! Fantastic Coat!

    This coat is trash!!!

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 195lbs

Order what you will because honestly it doesn't matter to me. But here's my honest opinion on this jacket....there are options that are cheaper that are better and there are most certainly options that are more expensive which are much better. That said, here's my reason for bashing:

    1. Pockets: Small, oddly placed and WAAAAAY LACKING in numbers.
    2. The hood: Too wide and floppy while being too short, the fur ruff looks like cheap and the integrated neck gaiter constantly gets caught on your head
    3. Torso width: Lacking drawstrings this jacket justs flairs out at the waist inviting cold breezes directly up your coat.
    4. (The reason I returned mine) The arms are meant for little children, I by no means have long arms, with my arms raised to shoulder height the sleeves come to the middle of my forearm.

Spend the money on a Nobis or Canada Goose or save your money and buy a nice midlayer piece to wear with a cheaper coat

    Love it

    • Size Bought: medium
    • Height: 5'10"

Live in Ohio so winters are hit or miss, but we just had a couple weeks of single digit and negative temps and this coat has been awesome. I took the recommendation about it running bigger and got a medium instead of a large (I'm 5'10" 170 lbs) and it fits just right. The built-in gaiter is a great feature and eliminates the need to carry extra items. Only thing I would change is to have a larger zipper that's a little easier to use on such a big coat. Hoping it lasts for a long time!

    East Coast Approved

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

Bought this as a gift for my brother who lives in Boston and needed a warm parka to take on his first East Coast winter. This definitely does the job. Not too puffy, super warm and fits true to size. His only minor complaint is that the hood is a bit small for his liking. Other than that, he loves this parka!

    Great Coat. Poorly designed zipper

I bought this coat for my father who is a big man (3XL)

It fit perfectly. He loves the coat and it’s warmth. Unfortunately, he is having trouble getting it zippered on a daily basis. I hope we can find a resolve as it’s the warmest coat I found in his size. I did see another review about the awkward zipper design.

    Perfection wrapped in down

Warm? If by warm you mean wanting to walk through an arctic tundra, prancing as if it was summer in the cool grass then yes, yes it is. I wore a short sleeve shirt and this coat and was warm well into the teens. Do you love the outdoors? How could you... You don't have this jacket yet.

I bought this coat wanting to go anywhere anytime and never worry about the cold. It did just that. Also, go a size smaller or it'll look like your wrapped in the drapes hanging from your ceiling.

Best Jacket I Ever Bought For...

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is the best jacket I ever bought for $50. Got it on sale big time at a close out rack at a big sports store chain. AWESOME!!! I saw it the day before for $100 but didn't pull the trigger and then the next day it was $50 -incredible.

this is a fantastic parka! definitely one of the warmest, especially for the money, about 1/2 of the cost of the antarctic parka's you see on the science channels and almost as warm according to reviews i've read on the internet.

today it's 4 deg F, wind chill of -16 at noon (north east wisconsin). comes down to about mid-thigh (i'm 6'3

    Warm jacket without the bulk

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 195lbs

I received this as a "gift" from my wife - I picked it out myself :-).

Pros: WARM. Have worn it in NY weather this winter (temps in the teens in F) and was surprised at how warm it was. I only had a long sleeved t-shirt and this coat, and was out in the snow without feeling anything. I was almost sweating, but that may have been a result of the outdoor activity rather than the coat.
STYLISH. I also bought the Gotham II, which I also liked but for different reasons. This one is longer, and looks a bit more refined. Also, you get the warmth without looking like a "Michelin man". I have even worn it over my suit for work, instead of the traditional wool overcoat, when the temps were in the single digits.
OTHER. Face mask built in, waterproof, down, detachable hood/trim, multiple exterior pockets

Cons: Yes, the sleeves aren't ribbed, coming instead with velcro - which makes them less snug - but that can be adjusted relatively easily. I also found the zipper was a bit clumsy to use - because it is a double-zipper system which doesn't begin at the bottom of the coat (which extends about six inches lower than the bottom of the zipper). That is probably my biggest gripe, though I have to say the extra length adds to the more stylish look on this coat.

Sizing - I thought the jacket ran a bit large. I am usually between L and XL in many stores (XL usually, particularly if the cut is slimmer). The XL was way too big for me here. The L fits perfectly. Backcountry customer service was simply awesome in helping me sort through my questions to get the right one.

    Lives up to the name

McMurdo is the name of the research station in Antarctica. And while I've never been there, I imagine I'd want this jacket with me while I was there.
The waterproof shell keeps the down inside nice and dry so I have stayed nice and warm even during heavy snowfall and moderate rain. Even though it is only 550 fill down, I think that the waterproof and wind-proofness of the jacket help in keeping heat in so I'm as warm as I would imagine being in a much more expensive jacket. I really appreciate all the pockets as well!

The one downside is that I wish the arms were a little longer.
