McMurdo Hooded Down Parka III
Arm yourself against blasts of arctic air and raging blizzards this winter with the quintessential cold-weather protection of The North Face McMurdo Hooded Down Parka. Packing warmth when the city hits single-digit temps, this classic parka boasts 550-fill down insulation for high-loft warmth in brutal conditions. The down insulation also brings a luxuriously padded feel to your everyday commute and around-town errands.
When snowstorms barrel down on your city, the DryVent 2-layer membrane seals out wind-driven snow squalls from soaking through and compromising your warmth. Classic parka styling sits a bit longer to keep you warm and dry, especially in downright nasty winter conditions. The zip-off hood provides greater versatility for widely variable conditions, and it's packing an emergency gaiter for sealing out nasty weather.

This fits like a plus size jacket

My husband needed a warm winter coat, but he isn't a fan of the puffer style jackets so this one seemed promising. I took his measurements and ordered a medium based on the size chart. When it arrived, I was shocked to see how huge and boxy it was, especially for The North Face which is known for "running small". We returned it and ordered a small and it was equally massive. He looked like a little boy wearing his daddy's coat. It was ginormous and very unflattering for his tall/fit frame. I noticed on the tag, it says "relaxed fit". Bingo! There's the problem. Relaxed fit is synonymous with men's plus size. This is a MEN'S PLUS SIZE JACKET, but for some reason, they can't just mark it as such. I think a lot of people would find that information incredibly helpful. This detail isn't in the description. I'm frustrated because now I have $900 held up in returns when I used the size chart. It's very inconvenient because he still needs a winter coat and I'm out $900 on two illfitting coats until the returns process. If you're built anything like the guys in these photos, don't buy this coat. It will not look the same as the photos. I honestly believe they're wearing the boys version of this coat for the photos. My husband is 5'10", 160, slim/fit build, a lot like the guys in the product photos. If you typically gravitate toward clothing marked as "husky" or "relaxed fit" or consider yourself to be a bigger guy, this coat is made for you, but you'll probably want to size down. It's a nice quality coat and has a plush memory foam-like feel to it. I wanted it to work, but the search continues as a nervously await my refunds.

Seems durable and warm but...

- Fit:

- Size Bought
- Large
- Height

I’ve worn it twice during early cold here in Boston. The hood is not big/deep enough. This left my head exposed. There are no draw strings so you can’t pull it tight. The removable faux fur is not as plush as it looks and I wasn’t planning to use it. Even with it, it doesn’t do the trick. I tried wearing a hat underneath but the hood basically is unable to do much at that point....

The size was a lot bigger than expected and the cut is basically a straight rectangle without deviation. The pockets are also strangely placed. I would go at least one size smaller. I ordered a size bigger unknown that it would be so big. Coat was about two sizes too big for me. A large probably would of fit well

After a lot of research I landed on this jacket, and I am very thankful that I pulled the trigger on this purchase! It is warm, comfortable, and provides the quality you expect from TNF. I would buy this again and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this jacket to friends and my worst enemies, because after all, everyone deserves to stay warm in the winter!

I purchased a jacket I wasn't happy with and the team at backcountry.com couldn't have been more helpful. They paid for return shipping and gave me some advice on finding the right jacket for me. Extremely professional and courteous, I will definitely shop on this site in the future.

I am a little stocky in the chest and shoulders and the jacket ran a little big in the mid section. I felt like Sponge Bob Square Pants but it will probably fit some well and others not.

Before I got this in December, I did a lot of research to find the warmest jacket for the money. All reviews pointed me to this parka. Since then, we have had a lot of nasty, cold weather here near Traverse City, Michigan. So far, I have worn it in -22 mornings being totally comfortable. Iâve wore this snowboarding, to my daughterâs ski meets, on my daily commute, snow blowing my driveway, and will wear it ice fishing this weekend. This is too warm to wear inside for extended periods. Iâm 6â1â 200 lbs, and a large fits well, just a bit roomy. I personally donât have much of a problem with the zipper as I had read others mention. It is a double zipper like a sleeping bag, so you can unzip upwards from the bottom - which I have found is handy to take a leak.

Zipper and collar suck
Such a gorgeous jacket and so warm. Tough exterior. I loved it but had to return it because the zipper was absolute garbage. I could never get it zipped. Northface has always given me problems with zippers. I’ve had to send jackets back to have them replaced. The collar is a complete design disaster. Other than that this jacket was perfect I was so disappointed to Return

I bought this coat for my father and here is what he has to say: Living in Boise, Idaho, it stays cold for quite a while. This coat is great for my retired life, getting me to the mailbox, church, and from the car during shopping. I like this coat alot and it's 'quiet' (meaning the fabric doesn't crinkle when it's cold)

Purchased it as a gift and so far he loves the parka. He's mentioned that overall the parka is super warm and he has not had any issues. I thought the chest pocket placement is a little odd, they could have positioned the pockets a little bit lower but my buddy loves it.

I purchased this as a gift for a friend. This is what he said about the parka: “This parka is fantastic. It’s kept me incredibly warm and dry throughout this winter thus far. The down is incredibly comfortable as well. I haven’t tested it much in the mountains yet, but in freezing and windy temperatures in the city, it’s been great. Even considering that this is a parka, I think it runs on the larger size, like a lot of stuff from The North Face. In most brands, I wear a medium, but the small McMurdo fits me perfectly.”

All good but the hood
Unfortunately the hood on this coat is not of much use in my opinion because it doesnât have cinch down pull cords in the front on each side. So as soon as you get a gust of wind the hood wants to blow off your head and doesnât really provide much protection. I also thought it would be warmer than my Marmot shadow down jacket which only comes down to the waist, but it could be because of the higher down loft.

I was looking for a warm coat. That was my number 1 priority. This coat is warm, but not too warm for me (Missouri winter seasons). Yes, the coat is a little bulky. It is like wearing a down comforter. But that is also what makes it so cozy and warm. I was good to go with an undershirt, and a polo, with this coat in 9 degree temps. Yes, the zipper is a little cumbersome. But you will get used to it. Perhaps, the coat may not be quite as stylish as others, but what I really wanted was a nice warm coat, and that's what this is. I am 6'2", 220lbs and got the XL. It fits just ever so slightly large, but I am good with it. I don't think you are going to find a warmer coat for the money.
