Good for Casual Use!
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: XS
- Height: 5'2"
- Weight: 104lbs
I have never owned a Gore-Tex product before purchasing the North Face Apex Flex GTX jacket, so I was excited to test it out and experience Gore Tex for myself.
The first time I used this was on a day with light rain and it kept me dry, but not necessarily warm. The jacket is a shell -- so there is no insulation to it. On a spring day or early fall day this would be a warm enough jacket over a cardigan or something similar, but if you wear this in the winter you're going to want a warm layer underneath it for sure. The Apex Flex does come in an insulated version so opt for that if you want something warm!
I also took this on a hike near Grizzly Gulch, Utah back in October on a brisk chilly day, and found that while it's definitely waterproof and windproof, it is not the most breathable. I found myself sweating and feeling too hot in the Apex Flex on the hike up even though it's not insulated. The underarm zips helped to a point but not as much as I needed. When we reached the summit the heat quickly left my body/ and I ended up switching to my North Face Summit L3 down puffy (which is toasty warm).
Overall I would highly recommend this jacket for casual use on rainy days. It's very stylish (I have it in TNF Dark Grey Heather) and has a very flattering feminine cut to it. It's not overly girly and it can be dressed up or dressed down! It also runs true to size though the sleeves are a little long if you are short like I am.
You could take this on some light hikes, like around Silver Lake or a hike that doesn't have a ton of elevation gain. But I would suggest casual use over active use for this specific jacket -- there are tons of other products with great active use/more breathable Gore Tex out there! All in all a very nice rain jacket.
Returning item- cute but uncomfortable
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
This item is very cute. It is a heavy duty fabric, so would be very nice as a warmer option for a water proof jacket. The main problem is that due to the thickness of the fabric, the underarm zipper vents are incredibly stiff, which is very uncomfortable. Feels like a bulky zipper under each armpit. Returning because quite uncomfortable.
