An excellent all-arounder.
The North Face Men's Apex Bionic Softshell Jacket offers versatile protection for a wide array of outdoorsy activities. Its TNF Apex ClimateBlock softshell fabric is windproof and waterproof while its built-in breathability helps to keep you dry during aerobic exercises. The North Face added a fleece backer to add warmth on chilly days, and the cinch-cord at the hem keeps this jacket in place. Plus, there's an internal media pocket so you can jam out while you play in the woods.

Is this the updated version of the Apex Elevation?
I wonder: did somebody tried that jacket on real conditions?
Especially for those who had to stay because of the blizzard.
I have used the jacket through two winter seasons of Colorado mountaineering; absolutely no complaints. I must admit however, I have not tested it in a real blizzard; heavy snow, 20-30 mph winds yes, but no white-out conditions. Sorry, I avoid blizzards.
I want to use this as a shell over my Patagonia Down Sweater. Every jacket I own is a large (except Helly Hansen). I know the sweater will compress but am wondering if a large might be too snug to layer under?
How much warmth does this softshell offer? I have a Arcteryx Beta AR hardshell that fits slightly loose (L, med was too small). I have a midweight baselayer and also wear a very high quality, med weight merino wool sweater over that. Also, does fit slimmer than the Denali? The Denali L fit fine in the shoulder, chest and arms but was too 'baggy' on me, too much so for a midlayer, and subsequently let too much cold air in and is not windproof.
Having recently tried on both a Denali and bought the Apex Bionic, the Med in both fit very differently. The Denali seemed much looser in the body than this which was fairly snug. Seems like more would fit under the Denali than the Apex Bionic. I bought the Bionic since it was windproof and water resistant. There is a windproof Denali. My only complaint on the AB is that the sleeves are cut very narrow and it's hard to put on with any kind of sleeves on. Good luck!
