Absolutely Bomber
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I've used this in several expeditions throughout North America and can definitely say I've put it through the ringer. High winds, snow , rain, I've seen a lot of action from within the walls of this tent and this thing has hung tough through it all. I'll usually set up a small table/stove/kitchen area within the tent on one side, and use the other side for sleeping quarters. This all depends on your group size however. At almost 50lbs it's pretty big to be carrying, but you can split up the tent, fly and poles and create fairly evenly weighted loads. Definitely worth it if you're going to be in the mix for a while.

Hello I'm Red nice to meet you, im interested in this tent cause North face makes excellent quality tents but I have one question I'm having a hard time getting answers to. I'm wanting to use a stove the G Stove in particular and I'm wondering how the chimney works. Your review is the only review that mentions a stove being used at all and my local NF store had no idea if it would destroy it or not, usually I see people using teepee style tents with stoves using holes cut out with flame resistant fabric. But I really like NF 2M dome design over teepee designs if you could give me some first hand insight would be really helpful in my purchase thanks in advance

An Expedition Expert Tent
This tent stood up to the test on the Baltoro Glacier in Pakistan at 16,300ft this past summer. Phenomenal tent for base camp that is easy to assemble with a group of four plus folks, and resilient to all the elements. Great windows & double door protection (with fly), along with several pockets/sleeves for storing gear. Good floor that is very strong and withstands climbers' abusive tred. Shape allows for easy snow shedding and size is perfect for hanging out. We fit eight plus folks and extra gear and communications in this tent comfortably. The tent had no issue with hot to cold, and ventilates very well with the 2 doors & 2 windows unzipped. This tent is not wanting in any way, and the designers have covered everything you need in this product.

Great looking tent, but at 47 lbs, that's quite a load to carry on foot for a week from Askole. I assume it breaks into three parts of, what, 15 pounds? I'd also love to know what packs people chose for the trip. thanks

Hi Alaska Barb, sorry for a year delayed response. Just saw this comment via the new tool on this site. Yes, it splits up into 3 different loads. I don't own it so I have to double check but I think you are more or less right. We had porters carry it to our base camp so it is heavy but for a big team , it was very worth it. We all used different packs. The TNF folks used their specific packs and I am an Osprey athlete so I use the Variant and the Ariel for trips like this now. Hope that helps..almost a year later! :)

I see this tent has a stove vent. 1) Has anyone used a stove inside? 2) If so, which stove? 3) How big is the stove 'hole' in the tent floor? 4) When not using a stove, is there a stove 'hole' cover? 5) Why are there no pics of a stove in use? The location, center, off-center, can really change the configuration & limit the # of ppl. 6) Sorry for all the questions, debating between this tent & an Alaskan Tarp & Tent outfit. thank you!

The North Face Meter Dome tent is a burly base camp tent used for big mountain expeditions such as Himalayan 8000m peaks, Denali Ranger bases, and Aconcagua. It's often used as a hang out area with a platform setup for the stove, so there isn't a hole in the floor for a smaller stove setup. You could likely set one up on the floor if you're creative and careful not to catch the tent on fire, but that's at your discretion. I've used a 2-burner Coleman stove in these and it works great for group cooking, venting well through the chimney (still be wary off fumes building up though). Alaska Tarp & Tent does a great job of custom designing bush tents, but this is not that. This is a lightweight mountain expedition tent that has the durability and design for 4-season big mountain use. You can use this tent for sleeping large groups or as a hangout zone, the manner which you utilize the space best is up to you.

Ahhh...so this isn't a stove pipe vent, but a simple chimney. Gotcha. Still, a valuable option to keep condensation down & a 4-season design. thank you!

Floor: 420 D nylon taffeta with 10,000 mm PU That's about as durable and waterproof as you will see in any tent out on the market right now. The floor is fully taped and constructed for heavy traffic and mountaineering conditions.

Any expedition tent made by The North Face is going to stand strong in extreme conditions. This is the base camp tent you see in almost every Mount Everest documentary. The floors and doors are made for high traffic.

I've camped on a col in Bella Coola for a week in high winds (gusts to 60MPH) and have to say this is rock solid. The thing hardly flinched even during the stronger gusts. Setting it up in those winds was an adventure though!

Different materials, lighter, Chimney vent, sleeves vs. clips... This one is made to take a little more constant abuse for a longer period of time.
