Falconer II Mips Helmet

Sweet Protection strives to create superior protection that inspires athletes to push their limits without worrying about their equipment. The Falconer II MIPS Helmet just so happens to be their flagship road cycling helmet, providing riders with an ideal combination of protective coverage, first-rate ventilation, and an aerodynamic shape in order to help them to ride at their best. Compared to the standard Falconer II helmet, this version sees the addition of a MIPS Brain Protection System, a low-friction layer that protects against harmful rotational forces experienced during certain types of crashes.

The Falconer II MIPS features extensive ventilation via large intake and exhaust ports, including a patent-pending Superficial Temporal Artery Cooling Channel that cools the temporal artery while still providing coverage or your temples. The 4-piece shell uses variable-thickness polycarbonate for lightweight toughness, molded to a shock-absorbing EPS foam liner to effectively cushion impacts.

The helmet is adjustable via an Occigrip Turn Dial that allows one-handed adjustment to both tension and height, and each helmet comes with two different thicknesses of moisture-wicking padding to ensure a comfortable fit for every rider.

  • Sweet Protection's flagship, well-ventilated road helmet

Killer helmet, runs a little small

Absolutely love this helmet. It's super lightweight, breathes well and looks fantastic. Tired of showing up to the groupride wearing the same helmet as all your buddies? Value form and function? This is the lid for you. One warning--it's probably not a good fit (literally) for those with large or round heads. The shape is pretty long and narrow and it runs small so check the sizing guide and measure your done. I normally have to ratchet down Medium size helmets a lot and not this one.

This came recommended to me by a riding buddy who has a similarly-shaped head to mine: narrow, maybe a little pointy on top. Most helmets start to dig in on the top of my head or forehead, even wearing a cap underneath for a little extra padding. I've been riding a Kask Protone for the last several years and it's mostly been comfortable, but the retention system gets in the way of the arms of most of my sunglasses. So far I'm really happy with the Falconer. Fits comfortably, retention system is simple but very effective, vents pass tons of air through, no bumping my glasses askew. Out of the box the chin-strap sits farther forward than I'd like, but it's adjustable with some effort. The look is less polarizing than some of the stuff from POC, maybe a little less subtle than my Kask. I'm impressed and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Falconer to anyone else.

UPDATE: I am knocking this down to three stars. I have learned that my head shape and this helmet do not get along. I have to tighten it pretty tight to get a snug fit which leave my forehead begging for some pressure relief while my temples are asking for more tightness. Although that is more of a personal issue, the locking system is an objective fault. It worked well for the first 1-2 months, but since it has been iffy at best. For most of "clicks" when it is at its widest (when you first put your helmet on), they do not stay as such. For example if you loosen the tightening system all the way then try to retighten, it takes going VERY tight for it to not just pop back open to fully loose. Somedays the click is more pronounced from the start so you can tighten it appropriately without feeling like your head is going to pop, but that is now a rarity. It results in me either loosening and tightening over and over until it properly engages, or tightening it a little too tight so that it engages. There are two small screws keeping the retention system and I could probably open it up to see what it wrong, but at this price point you really should not have to do that after a few months of riding.

I've struggled with helmet fit in the past with brands such as POC and Giro as I have an oval head. Specialized fits my head perfectly, but I've soured on it after I was concussed while wearing a Prevail. Sweet fits in a very similar manner and does not have any movement even while riding CX. I also own the Bushwacker for mtb - very happy with this too. Hopefully Sweet continues to invest in cycling as their helmets are the best I've owned.
