    Full-fledged training watch.

Boasting many of the best features of the more expensive Spartan Sport Series into a streamlined and attractive package, the Suunto Spartan Trainer Wrist Heart Rate is a superb deal for anyone seeking a low-profile training watch packed with a boatload of innovative features. First of all, you'll find its optical heart rate sensor by Valencell delivers accurate measurements of your heart rate—all without dealing with a pesky chest strap. Heart rate monitoring is crucial for gauging your cardio endurance during a grueling workout or outdoor activity, as well as estimating when you're fully recovered afterwards. This heart rate monitoring is built into your 24/7 daily activity tracking as well, measuring your lowest resting heart rate on a daily basis for estimating your overall fitness levels.

The Spartan Trainer Wrist Heart Rate features sport-specific displays to your intended activity, such as running, cycling, and swimming. A great feature for the dedicated triathlete, runner, cyclist, or swimmer, these sport-specific displays display relevant, real-time data on your training efforts. If you're more of an adventure seeker, the 80-plus sport modes are available through Suunto's MovesCount app for iOS, Android, Apple computers, and PCs. These different sport modes range from hiking to ski touring, giving you a wide breadth of available disciplines to suit your on-the-go lifestyle.

Another big feature for a watch in this category is the GPS-based activity tracking and navigation. The built-in GPS receiver quickly locks onto satellites to record your distance and speed, as well as providing outdoor maps with routes of popular biking and hiking trails, provided you've loaded them before heading out into nature. GPS-based route navigation means you'll always know where you're going and the breadcrumb navigation trail helps you return back to where you started without getting lost along the way. Best of all, Suunto's MovesCount app has numerous HeatMaps produced by millions of users getting after it, allowing you to find new routes, trails, and zones previously unknown to you.

    Game Changer!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

So far I have used this watch mountain biking, hiking, and trail running and it has been the best. I love all of the different exercises programmed, and how I can keep track on the app of my progress, monthly distance, etc. it’s comfortable to wear and I have kept it on 24/7, not just during exercise. I can’t wait to take it on longer hikes so I can keep track of my elevation throughout!

    Good watch, lots of data

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

It's taken me a little bit of use to get the features of this figured out, but so far I like what it offers. The movesount app provides some good data for your workout, or whatever it might be you're doing. The HR monitor seems pretty good, and the GPS tracking works well. I've been able to go 3-4 days on the battery with multiple 15-20 mile rides tracking on the best setting. I haven't tried the GPS navigation feature yet, but adding the route to the watch was pretty easy to do.

    Love My New Watch

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

To sum it up, I use this watch all day everyday! It helps me track my workouts, hikes and much more. I am able to choose through several types of activities and has all of the features I wanted. I was a little worried about the size being a bit too large, but it is perfect and feels comfortable during a workout. Very user friendly and i would highly recommend :).

    Almost perfect

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

This watch is great. It's not so big, so it looks and feels good on a small wrist. It has metrics for all your sports. Which makes it a very good option for triathlon training and competing.
The only downside is that when swimming on a pool, the detected distance is totally off. It usually removes the half of the real distance.
Swimming on open water works perfect since it uses GPS to measure distance.

Bought as a gift for my girlfriend

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought this watch as a gift for my girlfriend and she loves it. The biggest thing for her was finding a smart training watch that didn't engulf her whole wrist and this watch was perfect. It is great for those who are smaller framed. Overall she has zero complaints.

    Attractive, basic multi-sport GPS watch

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm updating this review after using the watch for triathlon training since November. I started having issues with it about 6 weeks after getting it, but was unable to return it due to backcountry's 30 day return policy. If swimming is a large part of your training regimen, I'd look elsewhere. It has a lot of issues uploading swimming workouts to the app/website and tracking distance accurately on the website (for lap swimming, not even using GPS. Even when it's correct on the watch itself, it transfers incorrectly and you can't change it). The auto intervals for lap swimming messes up more than it's worth, and it doesn't have a drill mode so it's difficult to adjust for less conventional sets. You can't set up swim workouts to follow, you're unable to scroll through interval summaries while the watch is paused, and the swimming support on movescount is abysmal. I had so many issues that Suunto replaced my first one through the warranty they have (which solved problems I haven't listed here). Now on my second one, the band has completely broken off from the watch casing and I have to send it in to get replaced again. They are unable to send a replacement until seeing the broken one so I'll be without a training watch for about 3 weeks. I really wanted to support a non-Garmin company, but unfortunately it's just been a headache since I've gotten it. I will say that it's very user friendly and the graphics and design are way better than Garmin's. It does work really well for running and supports a lot of different sports/activities. Bottom line, I wish I was able to return it at the end of December when I wanted to.
