I ordered this shirt for my husband as a gift and could immediately tell that the size chart was not accurate to fit an average size medium. My husband is 5'10" and almost always wears a size medium flannel. I compared this flannel to several other brands of medium flannels in his closet and it was consistently 6-7" longer and 2-3" wider than any of them. I will be returning this item. The length is oversized and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are well over 6'.

Should have washed it once. These shrink a LOT. Mine went from fitting like you described to almost a slim fit.
