Why We Like The Steripen Classic 3 Handheld Water Purifier

One of our favorite wilderness essentials, the Steripen Classic 3 Handheld Water Purifier with Prefilter Bundle Pack uses shortwave ultraviolet light to disinfect our backcountry drinking water. The Steripen system disrupts the DNA of harmful bacteria, viruses, and protozoa so they won't infect us on our adventure or afterward. The Prefilter screws onto 63mm-thread bottles, creating a tight seal that removes particles and debris from the water.

Works great on mountain hunts, It does have some battery issues. The temperatures were 35 over night and i had to take the batteries out and put them back in in the morning

Perfect for the Backcountry

Took this on a backcountry camping trip for 8 days. Our campsite was near a spring, and the Classic 3 allowed us to sterilize our water each day. This was a quick process and gave us peace of mind that any bacteria, viruses, or other organisms were killed prior to our consumption. The issue encountered was the UV lamp would take a couple attempts to fully illuminate in colder weather (40F). Between cold batteries and a cold Classic 3, the device would either fail with a red "X" or say a treatment was successful without the UV light fully illuminating. I found the best action was to warm the batteries and Classic 3 in my pockets prior to use. Once I did that, the Classic 3 worked as expected about 95% of the time. The 5% it didn't work, it would fail for an unknown reason and I'd restart the treatment with success on either the 2nd or 3rd try. Overall, this product worked for my group. In comparison to a hand-pump filter, this Classic 3 was more convenient.

Great Way to Sterilize Water

Pros: -light weight -easy to use -batteries can be found anywhere -no taste like other methods of sterilization (iodine/ chlorine) Cons: -need to carry spare batteries -takes 90 seconds of stirring I have had this product for a couple years now and it still works great. I've never gotten sick from drinking the water from it. It is really great for backpacking and travel in less developed country. If you use the lithium AA's it really takes forever to run out. However it's always a good idea to have spare batteries.
