Off-grid emergency notification.

Ever wonder what would happen if you were to take a nasty spill on your mountain bike, run into some stormy seas, or get lost hiking when you're miles from the nearest cellphone service? Luckily, the ingenious SPOT Gen3 GPS delivers critical, life-saving support when you're exploring the far-flung reaches of the globe, adventuring through remote stretches of National Forest, or embarking on nautical expeditions. This subscription-based service (subscription purchased separately) works via satellite-based GPS technology, quickly notifying either your preferred contacts or emergency response teams when your daring adventure takes a turn for the worse.

Improved over the previous generation, the new Gen3 offers motion-activated tracking that starts and stops when you do, helping to save precious battery life in the backcountry. In fact, the new Gen3 boasts nearly twice the battery life of the last-generation model for enhanced safety. Plus, the Gen3 gives you the choice of using 3 AAA Energizer batteries, in either Ultimate Lithium or NiMH reusable form. It also can be powered by a 5v USB line-in for extended use off-the-grid with a third-party charger. However, note that the USB charging configuration isn't waterproof, so it's best for hikers, long-distance cyclists, and other pursuits.

Great for Sailing

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had my SPOT since 2014. As a sailboat captain I'm often at sea offshore where cell phones and even VHF radios won't work for communicating with shore. The SPOT tracker lets friends and family keep tabs on where I am and share in the adventure. I especially like the "OK" button which I use for a daily check in with my shore contact.

The SPOT Tracker holds up surprisingly well in the ocean environment. Our longest trip together was 29 days straight on an ocean crossing with the tracker clipped on deck and taking constant spray and waves. Aside from changing the batteries every 6 - 8 days it worked without a hitch. The photo below is the tracker clipped to our deck leaving Oahu for Guam.

The only thing I don't like are the flashing LED lights when the device is active. When sailing at night I am constantly scanning the horizon for the lights of ships and buoys and the device can be a distraction. I solved this problem in 30 seconds by putting a little piece of duct tape on which blocked the lights but didn't affect the device.

If I'm sailing near shore I also avoid setting the device to update on close time intervals like every minute. If you go under a bridge etc. it can look like you sank to someone closely monitoring your progress!

Nice Adventure Companion

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had my SPOT Gen3 since March of 2015 and it has joined my son(14) and I on all of our adventures. My wife really likes being able to open the app on her smart phone at any given time to see where we are in our adventure. I take it backpacking, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, paddling, boating, traveling, cycling and trail running. When I am not adventuring I leave it in my car in case I have a mechanical issue with out cell phone coverage. It is really cool to open the app on my Iphone and see where my travels/adventures have taken me this year.

Of course there is also the piece of mind it provides to both my wife and I that if I were to run into any sort of trouble while off grid, I have the ability summon rescue almost anywhere with the simple press of a button.

It is super easy to use and considering its coverage area, it is an inexpensive way to make sure your loved ones know you are OK no matter where your adventures take you.

Never Travel Without My Spot

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've used the Spot ever since it's inception. I'm a back-country pilot and where I land, there is no water, no power, no cell coverage and no 911. The people who appreciate it the most are my friends and family who worry when they don't hear from me for long periods when I am in the wilderness and just a quick push of a button tells them in one email all they need to know...that I am alive and safe. And for true adventurers, that isn't always the case. I've also used it while boating because the same factors exist and I'd rather be able to alert rescuers and pinpoint my exact location than sit there like helpless shark bait. Very solid for remote logistics and SOS

With each generation of Spot comes nice improvments, and Gen 3 is the best yet. Keeping things simple is a top priority for me in the wilderness, and Spot has done a good job with thier interface on the unit and online. Love being able to share exact coordinates with other memebers of our backcountry groups that may be joining the main group at various times. Also love the option of calling for a helping hand (rather than SOS) from a friend in non emergenices .
