Snug fit for "Overshort" and run small

Ordered size large, this is a typical loose fit on my sub 36" waist. Even with the internal adjustment entirely disconnected, the fit is tight enough that I'm afraid the button will unsnap and the zipper flap material is pulled partially open. Crotch is also very snug. Not sure how well these would function over padded cycle shorts/liner. Material is OK, but quality is also suspect - no glaring flaws, but right out of the package one pocket is already starting to turn inside out at the opening. Returned.
