    Lightweight and tough.

From fresh corduroy to backcountry bowls, the Smith Variance MIPS Helmet combines technology and comfort for full performance. The hybrid shell construction combines a tough ABS shell with flyweight in-mold technology for a lightweight, protective fit. The impact-absorbing shell is backed by MIPS technology to reduce the rotational forces in the case of an oblique impact.

The Variance is equipped with the Smith x Boa fit system, which includes an ergonomic head form and an intuitive dial system for on-the-fly adjustment for a perfectly customized fit. An adjustable, AirEvac 2 ventilation system allows you to modify the amount of airflow and heat exhaust to provide effective climate control. Snapfit SL ear pads can be removed on warmer days and are audio compatible, so you'll always be able to hear your playlist. The removable Nanosilver performance lining offers comfort and resists odor to keep your helmet pleasant. A removable ultralight goggle lock helps keep your goggles in place so you won't have to stop and fiddle with your gear halfway through a run.

Keeps yer melon in one piece

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My favorite helmet i've owned. The BOA in the back helps you really dial in the fit. It has been comfortable in a lot of different conditions. The venting is amazing, it can be easily switched between open, partially open, and closed. My favorite thing though, is how it integrates with goggles and has vents that force air down into the goggles and clears out the chance of fog.

    Great Helmet

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet fit my head perfectly and has a nice look. I was on the line between M and L and went with the L and worried it wouldn’t tighten down enough but it does (apparently scrunching up the material inside but I wouldn’t have known it by feel). It is really comfortable and I forget it is on. The ear protection is pretty good. I’ve only felt a slight breeze through them on a day with gusts to 45mph. The vents work fine. I tend to overheat and I have never felt too hot. I haven’t skied in it above 35 degrees yet though. I can’t comment on its crash-worthiness (and hope I never can) but based on the quality of the other features, I would assume it would perform as it should.

    Nice helmet

Finally got myself a new helmet after many years, and this does not disappoint! It's warm, fits snug, and soft/comfortable. The sliding air vents are really cool and I like the visor design off the forehead. (not the best for putting goggles over, but cool look). This helmet is also MIPS so helps protect your precious noggin from when those sneaky edges catch ya!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Normally I go with cheaper helmets with less venting but I gave this one a shot and i love it! With my older helmets I would always fog up my goggles because my head couldn't release the heat I was building up. With this helmet, its no longer a problem. Also if you are trying to decide between MIPS and the regular version... It's simple. The regular version will protect you from crackin' the noggin open, the MIPS version will do that as well as protect you from a concussion by dispersing the impact.

    Soooooo Comfortable!!!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is an awesome helmet. I have always had issues with my helmets creating sore spots on my temple, but I spent all day with this helmet on and it was awesome. I can't say how much I love this thing.

    Melon Protection

The Variance is a helmet in Smith's line that just really checks all the boxes. It has a great fit, custom fit adjustment in the back, vents, and features a nice aesthetic.

I have been wearing the Variance for the passt 3-4 seasons and really thoroughly enjoy it. It keeps my head warm and best of all protected.

    Great fit

Loving my new lid. It fits great, feels light on my head and my chips audio fits perfectly in the ear flaps. Having the brim works great to keep air flowing into my goggles. The only downside is it is not as warm as other helmets I have owned. But, some would feel that is a plus.

A safe noggin is a happy noggin.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This helmet is super comfortable and when paired with smith goggles, leaves little chance for the dreaded gaper gap. The vents shed heat when open and keep you warm when closed. I'm not sure of the science behind MIPS but can it hurt it buy into the added protection? This is my go to helmet for inbound days at Alta.

    Just works

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Simply fits good. I actually bought 2 other very popular brand helmets then returned them after trying on a modern Smith helmet. I was really hoping to have any other brand because it seems everyone has one, but couldn't deny the fit.
AND... I had some wild falls biking this summer wearing a MIPS full-face helmet so it was time for a snow MIPS dome saver.

    I'm Sold!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the first helmet I've worn and I'm sold forever. The fit, comfort, sizing and function of this helmet is excellent and I recommend it to anyone. I used the sizing chart and the size I ordered was perfect.

    Love it!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The MIPS technology is the best on the market. And the safety of your head in an accident is not something to be cheap about ;) Definitely recommend this helmet. It is super comfortable and has vents for cold days / warmer days. I wore it in -10 degrees and my head stayed warm. I always thought I had a small head but when I ordered the small it felt like a child's helmet. Medium fit perfect!

    Variance by Smith

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I got one for me, my girlfriend liked it so much I had to get her one too. Comfortable fit and warm. Vents open and close easily. Good for safety too.

    Smith Variance Helmet

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this helmet because I can wear it with a hearing aid with out discomfort. It is very comfortable to wear has closing vents for wet or cold days and a cool little visor to help block some sun. It's probably real safe too but I hope Not to test that part.
