    Bombproof and breathable brain protection.

When you refuse to settle with uncomfortable and stifling helmets that make for sub-par ski days, strap on the Smith Vantage Helmet and experience comfortable protection like never before. Its innovative Hybrid SL shell construction combines Smith's bombshell ABS shell along the top of the helmet, along with a flyweight In-Mold technology around the sides, so you get the perfect fit, without sacrificing an ounce of protection. The new Aerocore Technology covers your dome with four Koroyd inserts, which absorb more energy on impact, while allowing air to pass through while you ride. The AirEvac 2 Ventilation system provides constant airflow by moving cool air through external vents below the brim and pushing warm air out of the 21 vents across the top of your helmet. If you start to get too cold, you can close the vents with the dual regulator at the top of the helmet that's easy to adjust, even with gloves on.

The Vantage provides a superior fit with its adjustable Boa FS360 Fit System, which has a full 360-degree halo design that offers both forward and lateral adjustments. The helmet's Nanosilver performance lining has antimicrobial features that keep the helmet smelling fresh after back-to-back days on the hill. Snapfit SL2 Ear Pads seal around your ears for reliable warmth on cold and stormy days, but can be removed once things heat up.

    Best Helmet I've Owned

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Light weight. Comfortable fit. Looks sharp... but most important, Great Ventilation. I'm a hot head. Sweating all the time. This is the first time my head has stayed cool.
Also, great fit with my Smith IO Goggles.
    Really happy!

    Integration is key

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Smiths helmet to goggle integration has continued to impress, and once you put this brain bucket on with a pair of their IO goggles you'll experience the magic for yourself. The Medium is a perfect fit for my dome, it fits perfectly with a buff and short hair, and snug with a long luscious mane. I had trouble loosing friends on the mountain so I now sport the Matte Black Fire so that they can see me darting around the winter wonderland. If you want an all around practical helmet, that has big mountain style and new 2017 technology, this helmet will not disappoint.

    Awesome Helmet

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have been using this helmet for a few years and just picked up a new one. The fit and venting on this helmet is unlike any other. I love the look of it with the I/O7 goggles.

    Great Helmet!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Everything is great about this helmet and most of it has been covered by other users but I figured I could add what my favorite feature is. The adjustable vents are amazing, my head always starts to run warm when I get moving and being able to slide the vents open so easily was clutch! When I hop on the lift, I just slide it closed. Couldn't be easier!

    Couldn't Be Happier

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This helmet is the way to go. I could imagine that a lot of people don't want to spend a lot of money on something they think the won't really need, but don't skimp out on protecting the brain bucket. I took a really bad fall landing head first and I was able to keep skiing without pain or worry. This alone makes the helmet a 5-Star piece of gear.

The helmet is also very warm on cold days and the vents dump heat well without letting wind in. Highly recommend this helmet to anyone.

Fit Review - did not test.

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I have not actually used this helmet, so read my review with that in mind.
This is to comment on fit (and form).
I have a somewhat oval head, and while the sizing chart says that a medium should fit my 57 cm head quite well, it does not. The range is stated as 55-59 cm, and it squishes my forehead. I can get it on, but it's not comfortable, and eventually causes a headache. It is very well made - better than any other helmet I've seen (though I haven't seen any Sweet Protection or POC helmets in person), but I have 0 doubts about quality, function, form. It's just unfortunate that it doesn't fit my head shape, so it's going back. Might get a large, but I've heard that for people in my boat, the large is just too large. Might look to Giro for something more oval, which is too bad because I like everything else about this helmet.

    works in all conditions

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet fits true to size and is very comfortable with the easy to reach/control venting system. It works equally well in cold dry weather, near freezing precipitation, and in warm sunny weather (which I was able to encounter all in one weekend). All in all this is an excellent helmet.

    Good but sized small

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Purchased the helmet a couple days ago after research and advice from Backcountry. I have always trusted Backcountry and have done much business there. There Vantage is sized and built small - no doubt about it. If you are at the low end of a size, you are probably good. I am right at the top - 59. There is no way I can fit into a Medium. Too tight. That is without a liner.

Within two days of purchase, the item went on a big sale. I was not advised. Not good. I should have been notified that a sale was less than two days away.

Need to return for sizing. It is a well built helmet - but tight.

Don't get me wrong. Backcountry is a great company, and I will return as a customer. But this was not the best customer experience.

Excellent Helmet - Great Venting !

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Have had a Vantage for six years and just purchased this newest version to replace it. The best just got better! Looks good, great venting, comfortable fit.

keeping dad's noggin in working order

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

So, dad's are a wealth of help and information on just about every subject, and I am only realizing how much help dad can be the older I get. To help keep his head in proper working order, I got him this helmet as a Christmas gift. Super lightweight all things considered, good venting and most importantly comfortable. He resisted the idea of a helmet, thinking it would be a bulky and cumbersome object, affecting his skiing, but he can barely notice it. Note on size: had to return the small and get the medium for best fit. It seems it does fit a little smaller than the size chart indicates.

XL won't fit 63-67 cm head as advertised

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Way too small!! This is a beautiful helmet with awesome features--and worth the price (if it fits). The size chart (along with Smith Optics) claim the XL helmet will fit a 63-67 cm head circumference. It will not, unless you jam it onto your noggin. I was skeptical when I read that claim, as I've always had to purchase XXL or XXXL helmets (which neither Smith nor Giro market anymore). I have a 63.5 cm head (7 7/8's). With the fit band fully extended, I could just barely squeeze my head uncomfortably into this lid--no extra room for a balaclava, and I could tell I would have a headache if I wore it all day. I contacted Smith Optics after getting my (as always lickity split Backcountry shipment), and all they did was reiterate what their fit chart states--they even sent me a new XL liner cable to see if that was the problem. It doesn't. If I take the liner completely out, the shell still fits snugly. There's no way the XL helmet shell is designed to fit a head bigger than 63 cm. If you are a 64, you'll need a jack hammer to get this thing on. Clearly most of us don't have enormous heads like me--but if you do, you'll unfortunately have to find a helmet elsewhere. I'm replacing an old XXL Giro--they also no longer make an XXL--instead they just claim that their XL is now a one size fits all. Not!! I'm still looking for a replacement helmet that will fit my large head.

F/U--I was able to find a white Bern Watts helmet in size XXL/XXXL and it fit my 63.5 cm. noggin with room for balaclava. Nice helmet as well--just not as nice as the Vantage (vents don't close), but it fit so I can actually wear it.

    It's protecting your brain right!?!?!?!?

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Next to purchasing an FIS rated racing helmet... this item provides awesome protection, comfort and warmth. Easy to use vents and flexible fitting system. Everyone in my family uses this model in one color or another. It's protecting your brain... worth every cent.

    Comfy Lid

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

it fits great. Breathes well enough, and when I take the ear flaps off and run a buff (which is 100% of the time I wear it) I think it looks like the helmets the rebels wore on Endor in Return of the Jedi and also Rogue One.

    Look No Further

If you already rock the smith IO's then look no further. This thing is light, half the time I forget it's there. Fit is great, the BOA 360 system gets it snug without feeling tight. I couldn't warrant the price of the mips upgrade and don't really feel it's necessary for my style skiing as we tend to ride powder and softer snow. Sizing is the only issue, this years does run small. The interface with my IO/X goggles is flawless. This is probably what makes me forget the helmet is there. My goggles don't slide around, pinch weird, or push down on my face. Great product if you don't mind the price. You definitely get what you pay for! Cheers

      Great Helmet

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love this helmet. It fits great. With the vents closed is warm enough for single digit temps and with the vents open stays cool enough when the heat is on. The boa 360 fit is great to get a nice snug fit. If I had one complaint it is that the ear flaps tend to press too hard on my ears and they get a bit sore after a few hours. That may have to do with the fact that I have to wear glasses when I ski so the temples of the glasses may be pushing my ears out just slightly. But it is not enough of an issue to be a real problem.

      Unanswered Question

I would love to know what Smith has to say about the independent safety tests these guys performed. Some of the Smith results are kinda scary, especially the penetration tests.

      Unanswered Question

Not a question, but a comment:

The Smith Vantage has a very round profile. It does not fit my long oval head shape well at all. I ended up with a Giro.

Can this helment be used for biking? If not what makes it different from the ones that have that as a recommened use? Thanks.

      Hey Gary!

I would not recommend this helmet for biking. The biggest point is that bike helmets are going to offer a lot more breath-ability. They are also designed for different types of impacts.

Check out the Smith Overtake or the Smith Forefront if you want an awesome bike helmet with similar technology from Smith.

Hit me up if you have any questions or would like to pick up one of those helmets.

Will my OT Chips work with the Variance helmet and, if so, will the chips be easily accessible (in and out) for charging?

      Hi Mitch,

I use the OT Chips in my Vantage and Variance without any issue. Charging is super easy even if they are still in the helmet. Contact me directly at the phone/email above if you'd like a personalized experience here at Backcountry.
