my go to active layer

This has been my go to mid-weight layer for the past 2 or so years. I typically wear it when biking, climbing, running, or when commuting into the office. It regulates temperature well and offers great breath-ability from a moisture control perspective. If temperatures get below the 20's I'll normally add a layer or two under or a shell over if it is snowing or raining.

Tl:dr: this is perfect for what I needed it for; that last layer that fits perfectly under a shell. Unfortunately, even with its great style, it doesn?t double as a jacket I use much beyond skiing. What I like: 1. It?s the perfect layer to go over a 150/200/250 merino base layer, and under a shell on cold days on the mountain skiing. 2. It looks really sharp. The chest panel is nice, mildly water resistant. Zipper is sturdy and the cuff around the neck is really cozy. There?s also the end zipper flap to prevent my beard from getting caught! 3. The build quality is great. I?m almost universally pleased with how Smartwool constructs the seems given how merino can be fussy at times. The inner layer is great, comfy, warm. What didn?t make it the perfect layer (preference-based mostly) 1. The sleeves. They are long and there is a lot of fabric around the thumb holes and I never like the feel with gloves on. They are slightly too loose (I have a slender build). They are not wind resistant. Brisk wind will cut right through these limiting use as an outer layer on those windy in-between days. Lastly, they are a type of fabric that catches on any long sleeve shirt and bunches them up by the elbows, forcing awkward readjusting. 2. The abdominal fit: it?s a regular fit and I knew that going in. It would feel great if I had more of a belly, but without it bunches up more when sitting because it?s length is below the waist line. I know to seek out a slim/form-fitting option in the future.

From the first time I put this jacket on I fell in love with it. So comfortable and a perfect fit. Can't think of an occasion where this jacket isn't the perfect choice to wear.
