    Best laying piece!

I love that its wool! An excellent layering piece - my whole family wears them - crews, leggings and 1/2 zip long sleeve tops. And if you put them w jeans - great for hanging out too. Easy to wash and wears well after numerous washings. Might get minimal pilling so wash w similar pieces. I have tops in med and large; sometimes I want room and sometimes need fitted.

Comfy enough to wear every day and performs great as a baselayer. I recommend this for some many uses.

If you read my site wide reviews you will probably get bored with how much I hype up Merino wool, but I will never get bored of wearing it. Merino is the warmest yet thinnest fabric and keeps me toasty on bitterly cold days on the slope, and when it's hot out, it's breathable and wicks away sweat and moisture. Since the fit is slim, it doesn't clump up under my other layers. I don't personally find it itchy. Wash in cold and you'll make sure it doesn't become itchy.

    The best

This top is very nice! It just has a very flattering cut! It looks awesome on, much better than on the pic. I am tall (5’11) and it’s long enough and the sleeves too! I love this top, didn’t expect it to be this good!:) buy it!!!!

Bought this for my sister in law. She is new to Utah and has always lived in warm climates. She reports that it is the perfect base-layer under shirt for skiing, fit is true to size and material is super soft and comfortable for all day in the snow

    My favorite top!!

I recently relocated from the south to the upper Midwest right in time for winter. Needless to say I did NOT have the appropriate gear. So I researched base layers for several days and landed on this top. It was on sale so I ordered two. And now I want them ALL. I haven’t found a job in our new town yet, so I quite literally live in these shirts! They’re wonderful and cozy to wear around the house, and easy to layer on top of for when I venture outside. My only complaint is that they hold on to hair... I’m a woman with long blonde hair and I have a white dog... not the best combination. I don’t think it’s a flaw in the product, though, just annoying. I’m a true small, and the small fits perfectly. 10/10 would recommend this top. You won’t regret it!

Wore this out on a day of snowboarding. It was too itchy to wear this directly against my skin, so I wore a thing long sleeve and then this and then my jacket. I was nice and toasty.

I'm normallay a Patagonia Capilene underlayer kind of girl but I tried these along with the matching bottom and was pleasantly surprised. The top fits snug and is farely breathable with a good amount of stretch + super soft. Would recommend

    Disappointed with the material

I bought this item based on the reviews. People raved about the material being soft and not itchy. The item is soft to the touch with the hands, however once the item is on it was itchy. I returned the item and decided to go with something else instead for my trek.

I love this shirt. I've worn it out to dinner, under and over other shirts and jackets, and I've worn it as a pajama/loungewear. Very versatile, but the dark green color is very stylish and the fit was very flattering.

    Breathable and warm!

This baselayer offers warmth but not to the point where you overheat. The material is breathable and comfy. Not at all itchy like most wool. 10/10 recommend!

This is one of my favorite shirts for skiing on cold days, or any day at work. It is quite warm, so I recommend saving it for sub 20 degree days on the slopes, but it can be worn casually any time during the cold months. The fit is really flattering and it is quite soft for a wool shirt. One thing I wish is that it had longer sleeves. Try sizing up if you have long arms.

    Great base layer

    Fit:True to size
    Size Boughtsmall

This is one of the best base layers. The fabric is so soft and warm. It wicks moisture well and is truly odor resistant. I am 110 lb and not a fan of tight fit; found small fits very well - not sung and looks slim. Awesome.

I own this shirt in five different colors. It is the perfect base layer because it wicks moisture and doesn't become smelly. I have worn this shirt as a casual top, as a base layer when skiing, as a pullover when biking, and as pajamas when camping. It is my favorite go-to top. I am 5"10" 140 lbs and DD cup and the medium fits perfectly.

Kudos to backcountry.com. My order of the smartwool top was cancel. Cool rep made it right by ordering another. The item is soft, breathable and totally magical! When it is on with a thin comumnia jacket, it made my backpacking trip in August at Point Reyes easy. I am 5”7 and half. 143 pounds. A small fits me.

I have 3 pairs of these shirt and they are warm, not itchy and great for layering. But, sad to say that after 3-4 washing its started to have small holes in front of the shirt. I hang dry them, gentle cycle with cold water during washing. Sad to say that I am dissapointed considering how much they cost.

Will these air dry over night?

Getting smartwool midweight bottom for my wife for christmas - also looking at the crew top - is it very long? she is about 5'10 and slender and wears a med. Just wondering if it's long enough. thanks

Steve, I am a similar build and height and have trouble finding shirts that fit nicely. I think Medium would be a great size—these shirts aren't super generous in length, but fair for a Regular (versus Tall) size. I would suggest hand washing and definitely hang dry as they shrink a bit in the torso and arms.

Are these shirts itchy? I usually stay...

Are these shirts itchy? I usually stay away from wool as a base layer because I can't stand the itchy feel of wool on my skin. But someone said these shirts are different. Any feedback?

Nope! Not at all Onep! The Merino ram is a different breed than that which you think of when you imagine an old itchy sweater from days of yore. The fiber is a LOT smoother (on a microscopic level) which results in better comfort and less irritation. Google Merino wool and take a look! One HUGE hint: DONT put this stuff in the dryer. Let it air dry to avoid any shrinkage and prolong the life of the fabric. Because it is a natural fiber rather than a synthetic fiber they tend to break down faster than artificially created fibers. Thus it's best to air dry to get the most life out of your garment. Hope this helps! If you have any further questions don't hesitate to chat or call in and speak with one of our Gearheads.

What size should I get if I wear a size...

What size should I get if I wear a size small in American sizes?

Emily, If you are used to wearing a small in most American brands I would suggest staying with a small in the SmartWool Midweight Crew. It will fit trim, but baselayers are intended to fit close to the body. If you would like to use this as a midlayer or prefer a slightly looser fit then you may be happier in a medium.
