    Dissapointed

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'5"
    • Weight: 124lbs

I have 3 pairs of these shirt and they are warm, not itchy and great for layering. But, sad to say that after 3-4 washing its started to have small holes in front of the shirt. I hang dry them, gentle cycle with cold water during washing. Sad to say that I am dissapointed considering how much they cost.

    Not itchy

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium
    • Height: 5'3"
    • Weight: 130lbs

I've stayed away from wool base layers because I thought they would be super itchy. They absolutely didn't itch. They were amazingly comfy. I would buy another pair in a heartbeat.

    Great Base Layer

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'5"
    • Weight: 120lbs

I bought this mainly to upgrade my base layer for skiing and hiking, but I've been wearing it everywhere -- to run errands, throw it on over my tank to / from the gym, etc. It really does a good job regulating your body temperature rather than just warming you up. That makes it especially great for hiking as I feel like I don't have to take layers on / off as often. I am really sensitive to itchy materials and this one doesn't bother me at all. It does stretch out a little bit as you wear it but not so much that I wish I had sized down. I think the fit is pretty flattering for a piece of clothing that's mainly supposed to be functional!

    Love It!!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'6"
    • Weight: 160lbs

I love my smart wool base layers. I never going snowboarding without them (unless its spring time and hot). They keep me warm. They fit well and they don't smell really bad after a day of use. I highly recommend smart wool base layers

    Warm Base Layer!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 125lbs

This is a perfect fitting top. The sleeves are just the right length and the torso is not to short. It is very warm and breathable at the same time, if you do sweat in the shirt it keeps you warm anyways because it is wool. Plus it doesn't smell by the end of the day, so you don't have to wash it if you are using the same base layer a few days in a row. Just let it air out and dry before using the shirt again and it doesn't smell bad. Wool base layers is the way to go!

Warm but with some minor flaws

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 135lbs

Based on all the rave reviews, I was prepared for this to be THE baselayer in my wardrobe and I was even preparing to get more (at this good sale price). It's ok but not great, I think. It's very well made (and unlike some wool baselayers, has nice cuffs and hem) and definitely warm. I got a nice green heather. But - it's kind of itchy, super static-y, and stretches out during one wear. Other wool baselayers (Duckworth, Ibex) that I have don't do or are not these things. The fit is true-to-size but becomes kind of frumpy with the stretch out issue. The sleeves are (thankfully!) long enough, as is the torso, but it's kind of too womanly-shaped for my athletic build - broader in the bust and hips and very narrow in the waist. Still, it's functional and I am sure it will last.

    Versatile and Comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 140lbs

Super comfy fit, I originally bought this for layering in cold weather for running, but since it is so comfy I also wear it when I just go for a walk.
You just air dry it and use it again...and again...
I have 2 shirts, but will buy more whenever they are on sale. Bought a size M and it fits comfortably, I didn’t want it to be too snug.

    Very Happy

This shirt is comfortable, well fitted, and runs true to size. I will use it as a thermal layer and can already tell it will preform great. Its not too thick or two thin.

    Does work.

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I gave this as a gift to a friend of mine for a fall adventure that she was headed on in the desert and she said that she was really pleased with how they work. As a baselayer, it works great and is really comfortable. The sizing is a bit large though, but wouldn't recommend a size up, just be prepared for a looser fit. With a down jacket only on top of this layer, she was really warm even in freezing temperatures. It works really well as a fall layer just on its own too.

Merino wool is the best base layer

    • Size Bought: small

Wool is a little pricey but totally worth it. It is a superior material for a base layer--keeping cold out but letting warmth escape. I love this shirt so much I was tempted to buy in different colors. It's cute enough to wear around town, too.

    Versatile and Warm.

    • Size Bought: XS

I use this baselayer for just about everything: cold weather running, hiking, skiing —you name it. The merino wicks away moisture, dries quickly and regulates my temperature with ease. And since it's a midweight baselayer, it does keep me pretty toasty so I find it's most ideal for super cold days otherwise I start to over heat. The fit is relatively straight forward: I'm 110lbs, and purchased an XS. It's definitely form-fitting so if you want some room to move and you're around the same size as me, I'd recommend sizing up. My only complaint is that the flatlock seams, despite being flatlock seams, are kinda bulky and annoying at times. But that's a pretty nominal complaint at the end of the day.

    Great base layer

I bought this to wear as a base layer for a trip to Iceland in May. Temperature will be in the 40s. I haven't had a chance to test it out very much but I wore it outside by itself on a windy 60 degree morning and the wind did not cut through. I was very comfortable, not hot or cold. Yes the material is a little itchy but I think anything wool is a little itchy. You will adjust. The shirt dries very fast. I got this in blue and it is not sheer or see through at all. Very stretchy and form fitted. Based on my measurements, the size chart indicated a size small however I bought a medium because I didn't want it to be skin tight. And it is still pretty fitted. It is also water resistant. I wanted to test this out (lol) so I poured water onto the shirt and it just bounced off and went on the floor. It doesn't soak up liquids. Also the material does not absorb odors.

    Not so Basic Baselayer

    • Size Bought: Medium

A great shirt to wear while hiking, skiing, or whatever outdoor activities you fancy. It's super soft and a bit thicker than other baslayers without being bulky, too heavy or itchy. It's incredibly soft and breathable and it is a fitted shirt that runs true to size so if you want it to be a little lose, definitely size up. This shirt is a staple for backpacking trips during the summer and fall as well as for day trips to the mountain in the winter.

    Great Base Layer

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 138lbs

Great fit for those with long torso/ arms. Runs a bit small so I went with the Large for comfort and full mobility.

    warm base layer

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'3"
    • Weight: 125lbs

little bit thicker then other base layers. Nice and warm. Not too tight either. I got a Medium because I thought it might be a really snug fitting top, and I like my shirts looser. Its very comfortable a little loose fitting a size up. For anyone else my size I would recommend a small.

    Great baselayer

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

I bought this for my mother because I love mine so much (I bought mine last year and wore many times). It's perfect on its own when the weather is starting to chill but not too thick to wear underneath additional layers.

    Short all over

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 125lbs

I wanted to like this shirt, though, it was just too short all over. I liked the formfitting shape which is nice for layering without wrinkles and bulk, which is why I decided to return it rather than size up.

    Perfect

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 185lbs

I have been in search of the perfect foundation garment for x-c skiing and snowshoeing, and this is it! I have worn it from 5-34 degrees, and only change my outer garment depending on the temperature and wind. Not itchy at all and a great color.

Getting smartwool midweight bottom for my wife for christmas - also looking at the crew top - is it very long? she is about 5'10 and slender and wears a med. Just wondering if it's long enough. thanks

    Steve,

I am a similar build and height and have trouble finding shirts that fit nicely. I think Medium would be a great size—these shirts aren't super generous in length, but fair for a Regular (versus Tall) size. I would suggest hand washing and definitely hang dry as they shrink a bit in the torso and arms.

Are these shirts itchy? I usually stay...

Are these shirts itchy? I usually stay away from wool as a base layer because I can't stand the itchy feel of wool on my skin. But someone said these shirts are different. Any feedback?

    Nope! Not at all Onep!

The Merino ram is a different breed than that which you think of when you imagine an old itchy sweater from days of yore.

The fiber is a LOT smoother (on a microscopic level) which results in better comfort and less irritation. Google Merino wool and take a look!

One HUGE hint: DONT put this stuff in the dryer. Let it air dry to avoid any shrinkage and prolong the life of the fabric.

Because it is a natural fiber rather than a synthetic fiber they tend to break down faster than artificially created fibers. Thus it's best to air dry to get the most life out of your garment. Hope this helps!

What size should I get if I wear a size...

What size should I get if I wear a size small in American sizes?

    Emily,

If you are used to wearing a small in most American brands I would suggest staying with a small in the SmartWool Midweight Crew. It will fit trim, but baselayers are intended to fit close to the body. If you would like to use this as a midlayer or prefer a slightly looser fit then you may be happier in a medium.
