I ordered these gloves and wore them in my house — I couldn’t decide if I really wanted them. After just using my phone a bit while sitting outside, I decided they didn’t live up to the Smartwool brand. They weren’t that comfortable, were scratchy, and just felt pretty cheap. I wanted something softer and lighter. These do hold heat in okay. They’d do the job as a liner I suppose, but still not that comfortable.

Touchscreen part gets holes quickly

I loved these- warm, work with my touchscreen, found them perfect for winter running and commuting. However, I got small holes quickly in the fingertips at the touchscreen fabric, after a week or two of use. Not sure if this is a common problem or if I got a defective product, since there were loose threads and some fraying as soon as I opened the package. After about two months of consistent use, the index finger hole is completely blown through. I would repurchase but at this price point I can't buy new gloves every two months. A little disappointing knowing the usual quality and longevity of my other smartwool products.

Perfect winter running glove. If it's below 10F or really windy I'll put a running mitten over, but for nearly all Vermont winter miles they are all I use.

Got a hole on the first use
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
Used these on a hike up to Camp Muir on Mt Rainier. They worked pretty well except for the fact that they got a little hole near the middle finger on the left hand. I'm not sure why, but it could have been from the rubbing from my trekking poles that I used the whole time. I kept them because other than that they are good gloves, but I was definitely a little disappointed with their performance.

Solid liner

There really isn't much to say about these gloves. They are wonderful little liners for really cold days up on the mountain and work great for just walking around town in the cold.

Needed Glove Accessory
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
Perfect glove liner to go under a good winter glove. Makes it super convenient if you need to remove your big bulky glove to adjust goggles, zip up a jacket, adjust a ski binding. Anytime I take my gloves off my hands freeze, however with a merino wool liner I stay warm and dry.

These are great liners under my thin leather gloves! I didn't want to drop the $ for a new more insulated gloves good thing these keep my hands much warmer then I expected. Overall very happy with the purchase

The Best Liner

These gloves are great. I use them as liners in my leather ski gloves. I like that I can use my phone. Very warm. Will be buying more pairs soon.

Surprisingly solid.

I thought I wasn't going to write a review for some simple liners, but they held up really well. As much I try to have everything be 100% wool when wool comes into play, I'm guessing the addition of acrylic and co. probably stopped these things from disintegrating after a week of heavy use. As soon as winter comes around I have them on daily and take them on and off between 1-2 million times a day! Despite that, they lasted almost 2 winters, and had I not kept them on the first months while undoing knots, the index and middle fingers probably would have lasted even longer before breaking through the gloves. Used as true liners (not as stand-alone gloves!) these things are great!

Just love these.

I do a lot of outdoor photography with sophisticated camera equipment. These gloves are awesome. For me, they are good to well below freezing and I can keep them on for any photography task. I just bought three pairs as they do show wear faster than some other gloves. But who cares, they are reasonable and do the job so well

Not a fan. Large and thick.
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
Maybe I just was looking for a different product, but this seemed to fit much too large and much too thick to be of any use for a liner glove. If I needed a stand-alone minimalist glove this may have worked. I found the wrist much too thick and returned them. Got a competitor's liner and it's been perfect under my gloves.

Great for layering up on the cold days (my Arcteryx Betas are not exactly toasty), great dexterity and comfort when dazzling with zippers, cigarettes, bindings, phone. Wool quality is excellent. Silly not to have a dry pair in your pocket.

The "Go To"
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I've had multiple pairs of these, and I always recommend them for a liner glove, or for running. I've run with these into the low 30s and had no problems, and my hands typically get cold first.

Smarty-wool.
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
This might sound fabulously absurd, but I've got some sweaty paws so I purchased these gloves to wear underneath my ski mitts or while running to wick away moisture and provide some low-profile insulation. Thus far I've used them both while skiing and running and to say the least, they're doing a fabulous job in both categories and ultimately provide smart warmth and quick body temperature regulation when I begin to overheat. In hindsight, I would've gone with a size small but the medium gets the job done just fine.

Great Cold Weather Liner
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
Bought these at mitten liners for the coldest days out on the ski slopes. I have perpetually cold fingers and have tried a lot of different options. These liners are really soft and provide a lot of added warm to my mitten system. They are definitely thin, and merino is a pretty delicate fiber, so you can't expect them to last unless they are only used as liners. I've had no problems with wear, but could see that happening if you try to use them as a primary glove. The fingers work well on touchscreens, and it's nice to have the added protection of liners if you're trying to mess with your phone on the chairlift. I've had 3 pairs of these and will continue to purchase them in the future.

Hole after ONE use?
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
They fit great, but I barely had time to try them on, and I could already see a hole starting to form on upper part of glove, when making a fist. True enough, and after only a few hours of light use...the hole formed. Another hole was forming at the base of the thumb area, connecting to palm. BOTH of them were on left glove only. Quality is obviously not up to expectations. Hopefully the other Castelli gloves I ordered will be better.

Buying another pair
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
Held up pretty well to a season of abuse. The finger tips started to wear out towards the end of the year but I like them enough to buy another pair. They were great at keeping my hands warm whether I was walking around town or popping my mittens off to use my phone on the lift. The touch screen compatibility also wears out after a lot of use. They're not the last pair you'll ever buy, but I was happy enough to buy another pair this year.

touch screen NON-compatible
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I owned the previous version of these gloves and they were great. They were light weight, but still warm enough on their own. They also worked very well with my touchscreens. This new version is sub-par, in my opinion. It is thicker, which makes the seams feel more cumbersome and uncomfortable, like those cotton finger gloves everyone wore as a kid. The thicker fabric apparently interferes with the electrical transfer between your finger and the screen because I have to push extra hard to make it work...if it works at all. Most of the time I find myself removing a glove to work my phone. Finally, as the other reviewers mentioned, the gloves do snag. Both of my pairs lasted 2 years each, which I would consider average for something that is really designed to be underneath another glove 90% of the time. I just happen to wear them alone 90% of the time. If I could advise SmartWool, I would tell them to go back to the thinner material, and also add silicone or similar material to the palms and fingers for grip (especially of electronics). Aside from those gripes, the gloves do about 80% of what they should, which isn't bad for $16.

are these men's or women's glove sizes?

The size chart doesn't say men or women, but I'm pretty sure they are in men sizes. I take a mens large size glove and these gloves in a large are just right for me. I really like these gloves and use them all the time. Especially like that they are touchscreen compatible.

Hey, AaronC. I'd like to know what liner you got instead. I searched all of your reviews for the word "liner" and this is the only one that came up so I wasn't able to figure out what you bought instead.
