Can't Go Wrong

These socks have been my go to socks when it comes to fishing. They fit comfortably with my wader bootie and aid in keeping my feet warm in even the coldest of waters. I have been wearing smart wool for over 10 years now and they never cease to amaze me. From hunting, skiing, fishing, or camping this brand lives up to its expectations.

These are great socks for any activity! I wear them for hiking, biking, and as an everyday casual sock. The merino wool material wicks moisture quickly and keeps your socks from getting too stinky.

I love the fit and the comfort. They are surprisingly warm for the thickness. I wish they made them in darker colors so I could wear them with dress pants to work everyday. I literally look forward to my days off when I get to wear these socks. They are that comfortable. I hope to have nothing but Smartwool socks in my sock drawer one day.

Classic Comfort
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
A classic hiking sock, great for hiking/camping and also around the house when it's chilly. I've had the same few pairs for over a decade, but I buy them frequently for gifts. Want to gift someone something silly they'll never use, or their new favorite piece of clothing they'll wear all the time? And to clarify, you definitely do not need to actually hike to enjoy these socks. They're just a great all around sock to wear with any winter boot that has room to accommodate at thick sock.

Smartwool makes great hiking socks. Your feet will be warm, they protect well against hot spots, and if your socks happen to get wet, they dry quickly.

Broke these in on six miles of muddy WY mountain trails. My feet stayed nice and comfortable the entire time. I'm sure they'll be a little too warm for summer hiking but for Fall-Spring, I know these will be my go-tos!

Cushy
- Familiarity:

These cushy hikers are great for long days on the trail and won't stink as much as your normal cotton sock. The merino wool is comfortable, wicks moisture, and anti-microbial.

Quality merino socks for hiking (or working in boots); merino keeps the warm where it should--with you--wicks away moisture, and the "medium" means they are medium thick throughout (vs "light" that has toe/heel cushion and a little thinner for the rest); weave design makes these durable, nice fit and heel pocket

Warm & Versatile

- I've used it several times
I wear a 7.5 shoe and bought pairs of these in both Small and Medium. The smalls are great for wearing with my winter boots or on a particularly cold ski day. Mediums I wear around the house like a pair of slippers because they keep my feet warm better than my slippers. For most uses, I'd say smalls are a better fit for a 7.5/8 shoe size. I also love these for wearing under my sailing sneakers, because they don't get cold when they're wet. I bought a pair last summer and almost immediately bought 3 more pairs. I also think they will be a good transition for when my ski boots start to get more packed out, as I wear a thinner sock for skiing currently.

You definitely should machine wash these and I would recommend a cold wash. Some people prefer to hang dry them but I have dried mine in a tumble drier without ill-effect.

I generally wash mine in cold and dry them on low, but I'm also pretty lazy, so it's likely they've been through hot/hot a bunch of times. They hold up well and you don't need to worry.

lots of older merino stuff says to line dry. some still does but more and more and saying to tumble dry low. i think putting them in the dryer allows more opportunity for pilling. big thing is if you wash or dry them on hot, you stand a greater chance of shrinking them.

Betty. I have owned smart wool socks since 2009. I cold wash and hang to dry. Machine Drying " thins" them. Put almost 2000 miles on them in 2009 and i still wear them. Love them. I own no other socks!!!!!

He's right at the upper edge of size L, and could probably go with either. I haven't had any shrinkage with any of my Smartwool socks. I wash cold and either hang or lay flat to dry.

ditto to steven. mine haven't shrunk at all, but i wash them on warm or cold and line dry them. i've found them to fit true to size.

They'll be pretty hot for that, I'd recommend the "Light" weight ones for hot-weather hiking or running. I use these for trail running and hiking: http://www.backcountry.com/smartwool-phd-running-ultra-light-mini-sock

Yes, but you may want to consider a sock with a higher percentage of synthetic. This will move the moisture away from your foot better, especially if you have sweaty feet. Try the Teko Synrgi series. http://www.backcountry.com/teko-midweight-hiking-sock-mens.html

Is the interior of the socks woven in a "terry cloth" pattern? I've worn these type of wool sock for years and am looking to expand my warddrobe.

No, the weave is in such a way that the inside color is contrasting (kind of like blue jeans), but is in the cozy merino wool. I wear these socks every day, well every day that I wear socks.

Depends what you mean by "terry cloth". The interior IS woven in what is called a "terry loop". The height, quantity and density of these loops are varied to provide specific amounts of cushioning and stretch. Hope this helps.

From the Smartwool website: "SmartWool socks are machine washable with cool or warm water. Tumble dry on low. To lengthen the life of your socks, it?s best to turn them inside out before throwing them in the washing machine." I personally hang dry my Smartwool and other merino socks and have been happy with the results.
