Not soft, not light

It's hard to believe this is 60% merino wool. They're stiff and scratchy on the outside, and not soft on the inside. Nor are they thin or lightweight. More like a standard medium weight cushioned hiking sock. Very disappointed. Will stick with Darn Tough or Icebreaker.

Great every day sock

I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

My husband loves his wool socks and says they are super comfy and durable

EVERY. DAY!

Love these socks! Use them every day! Usually end up buying a few new pairs in the fall and end up wearing them out by spring. Very warm and actually maybe dont breathe as much as I'd hope but they are still really nice. The fit is perfect, fairly wide in the forefoot and toes which is nice because I have wide feet.

Smartwool

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

This is a basic sock that does a good job. I wish the wool percentage was a little higher, and they seemed to stretch out a bit and be slightly big after a while, but I still reach for them often because of the comfort

Great for hiking and normal use

I'm using this not only for hiking for cold days as well, they fit nicely and are comfortable so your feet don't get super warm. Highly recommend this pair!

Good “ all-around” sock

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I bought two pair and used them on an Aoudad Hunt in 30-40 degree weather. We walked and climbed a fair amount and they struggled with wicking moisture out of a Gore-Tex Lowa Zephyr boot. It’s hard to keep dry in a boot that doesn’t breath well, so I’d say they did the best any sock could do. I highly recommend “Smartwool Hikeliner Crew Sock” as a liner. I have found these liners to either control the moisture better, or at least wick the moisture away from your skin. The liners make all the difference in the world in comfort. I love these socks and of all the smartwool socks I have (heavy pairs and light pairs) these are the best for moderate to strenuous activities in cold weather or for sitting still or light activity in mild (40-50 deg) weather. Get the liners to keep dry in any situation though. They do make a lot of difference!

What's There Not To Love

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Smartwool makes yet another great sock! Definitely solid padding where it needs, keeping you on the trail for longer. It's a game changer. Fit is great, length of the sock is perfect. I wear them mainly for hiking since the wool works so well for any extra moisture. Definitely a solid sock.

Perfect Hiking Socks

I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought these for my dad when he came to visit me in Utah. He hiked the canyons and throughout Moab and Canyonlands in these socks. Great for spring / summer weather. The socks are lightweight and stay in place while hiking.

Rad Socks!

These bad boys have padding in all the right places. They wick moisture like no other. I can feel my feet trying to sweat, to no avail. Good for all seasons and activities!

Smartwool Hike Light Crew Sock

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have a number of different wool socks and the ones by Smartwool are the absolute best. The Hike Light Crew Socks are normal weight, and if they end up like the other Smartwool products I have, they will stand up to a lot of use for a long time!

Great socks

I wear them hunting, fishing, and hiking. They are very comfortable and wick moisture away well.

My most used socks

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I recently purchased these socks in both gray and loden. I was originally looking for a warmer sock that would be good to wear with boots in the winter. These are my first wool hiking socks and I really enjoy them. They are not too heavy and are great for all occasions. I am typically warm and dont like really warm items. These wool socks are still light enough for me to wear while temps are still reasonable. I have yet to put them to the test in extreme cold conditions.

I have gradually been replacing all of my cotton socks with wool. These ones are super comfy and stay smelling good even after a day of hiking. Smartwool is the best!

Husband wanted some toasty toes and that's what he's got! Invested in some nice socks since he wears holes into his in one season alone. Hoping these last a bit longer

These socks are thick enough that you don't get blisters while hiking yet they aren't too hot and breath extremely well. They are my go to summer hiking socks.

I'm an 8.5 in some brands of shoes and a 9 for other brands... Which size should I get? M or L ?

chamhiker, I always prefer to go with the larger size when I am between sock sizes. I can also say from personal experience that the SmartWool Hiking Light Crew Socks will constrict just a little with multiple washes. Order the large and I think you will be very happy.

What's the sizing options for men and women. I wear a man's 10 1/2 shoe and my wife a woman's 8. How does that translate for the socks. Thanks.

The men's would be a Large and the women's would be a Medium for those sizes. There is a size chart right below the options drop down up above.

This sounds like a dumb question, but if you buy one quantity, is it a pair of socks? or is each sock 17 dollars? cuz everytime i turn around, it puts 2 quantity for the socks in my cart and it's throwin me off

One quantity is a pair of socks, fret not.

Also ... I like the toes to be thick enough not to wear out quickly. Otherwise I look like a bum from an old cartoon. Is the material thick / sturdy?

I wouldn't worry about durability. I've had a couple several pairs of these socks and other Smartwool socks for years and I've never had to retire any of them for wearing out any areas at all. It is almost insane how much use these socks can take.

It can depend on the fit. If you like your socks on the tight side, they will wear through the toes faster. Remember to trim those nails!!!

I've had a few pairs, and they hold up well. A couple of years worth of heavy wear before retirement.

Is it scratchy? Often times the tube is too tight and makes my skin dry and itchy.

I've never really had a problem with these socks being scratchy at all. I know what you are talking about with them causing dry skin and itchiness from being too tight and I don't find that these socks have that problem.

I was always concerned about Merino Wool making my feet itch but that is not an issue. These socks feel as soft as cotton.

I am trying to decide which sock would be best for me. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these liners and the regular SmartWool Hiking Crew Sock?

These aren't liners they are regular socks. Just not as thick as the other more of a warm weather sock.

I have just started walking trails and light hiking and am getting serious about what I wear in socks and shoes. If my shoe size runs between 11 1/2 and 12, which size in socks should I get, large or extra large? Thanks for your help.

Extra large!

Extra large!

Thanks Mike, I didn't know whether to go with the highest end of the large size and hope they stretch if too tight, or the lowest end of the extra large size and hope they shrink if too large.

would these socks work well as inner liner...

would these socks work well as inner liner socks with other socks over them for long distance hiking?

Not really. I use them alone or with running socks (Defeet or ultimax) underneath as liners. These socks are lighter than other smartwools, but still a wool sock and your feet will get really hot if you double up on wool.

Too thick to use as a liner sock. Try them by themselves first, you may not need/want a liner. Good socks.
