Nastro Piloti Bar Tape

When Silca comes to market with a new product, it goes all in with the research and development. It's latest item, Nastro Piloti Bar Tape, uses technology utilized in running shoe foam and F1 tires creating significant improvements over traditional bar tape. Nastro Piloti uses a laminate of SILCAthane, SILCAlon, and 3M Visco-elastic adhesive instead of a traditional single foam extrusion, allowing for optimization of the tape across a range of desired features.

As a result, the tape is softer, more comfortable, has better wet and dry grip, better vibration damping, and up to 3 to 5-times the durability of existing tape materials. The wrap and finishing of the tape weren't overlooked either and Silca developed a full adhesive backed ‘butterfly’ design to better cover the back of the lever clamp area without adding bulk, a high grip finishing tape, and expanding aluminum and composite bar end plugs ensure a pro-level tape job.

GREAT Bar Tape

This is an initial review, I've only done about 600km riding since installing this tape. This would get 5 stars if it was a bit longer by about 6 inches. Yes, it's expensive but it is very easy to install and you can wrap it tight. Way to early to comment on durability but I expect it to be very long lived. The dual grip choice seems a good option, I wrapped on the max grip side and indeed the grip is excellent with sweaty hands or in the rain. It is super comfortable and damps out vibration very well without loss of road feel. Yes, it is thinner but I find the vibration damping and road feel to be far better than thicker tapes. I'm very impressed with this tape, Silca seem to have done their homework well. I really like it on my road bike and am about to put it on my gravel bike. I've not used anything better, I also run Silca latex tubes and if the bar tape is as good as their tubes then I expect it will perform well for a good long time.

The bar tape is very thin and not long enough for standard handle bars. I have the black inc bar stem combo and there is not enough length in the tape to wrap with a figure 8 around the hoods, with out a figure 8 there is still not enough to cover the bar adequately. I would not recommend

New go-to tape!

I've used it several times

Although on the pricier end, I am absolutely in love with this tape! I'm a huge fan of thin feeling bars and tapes. In the past, I have really liked the 1.8mm lizardskins and even used Velox cotton tape to get as thin of a bar feel as possible. This tape is fantastic in that it doesn't add a lot of bar girth at only 1.8mm thick but punches above it's thickness is comfort and padding. It also doesn't have the ugly glossy look that lizardskins black tape does. The butterfly sticker to put behind the shifter is also a great idea but not needed if you do the figure-8 method which is doable with how thin this tape is! One annoyance is that the bar ends. although pretty and well machined, are pretty heavy at almost 30g for the set. I have ENVE bars so that doesn't end up being an issue but is something to consider. I believe that is on-par with the new Lizard Skins locking bar ends or other options from supacaz.

I've put it through the wringer

I commented on another poster below regarding the wrapping, it does take more care to wrap than most other tapes I've tried but the end result is pretty exceptional. The little butterfly piece is genius and makes taping around the hoods cleaner and easier than anything else I've tried. You can tell how durable the stuff is when you try to cut it with scissors to finish the wrap, my shop scissors couldn't cut it, needed the wife's 'good' scissors (don't tell;-). Aluminum end caps are way nicer than anything I've seen before, but the biggest benefit is the sweaty/rainy grip of the stuff, by far the best wet tape I've used. I've put this on 2 bikes now and just installed the thicker version on my CX bike,

This is probably the gripiest tape I've experienced. I wrapped one side in "High Grip" and the other in "Max Grip", to compare. They are both very grippy. There is a difference, but it is subtle, imo. It's only been a few months so I can't comment too much on durability, but it has held up so far, only showing evidence of wear on the top bend (where I pivot my hands when transitioning from tops to hoods--and how much wear that is, is debatable). No problem getting a good clean wrap either. General comfort is good as well. I put some Cinelli tape on another bike recently because I had it around, but I don't think it will stay on long, and I will be replacing it with more of this Silca tape.

Wrap is difficult to get smooth

I wanted to try this bar tape but found that it was much more difficult to get a smooth wrap than the Lizard Skin DSP tape I usually use. This Silca tape would have bulges as I wrapped it around the shifters and I just couldn't get it to look good. I changed back to Lizard Skin. It may just be my technique or my Enve bars but I can't recommend.

Admittedly I'm a SILCA fanboy but I've converted all my bikes to this stuff and find that the key is to just pull it taught while wrapping. It is definitely harder to wrap than the cheap stuff, but the reward is worth the extra time stretching as you wrap. Similarly, the stuff is super strong which is evident when you cut the tape to finish it off. My fiskars go through the lizardskin like butter and have to saw away at the SILCA to get through. Trust me, it's worth an extra 10 minutes or work up front to have the benefit over the next hundreds of hours of riding.
