Ergo 5 Mega Cycling Shoe

As a manufacturer of premium cycling shoes, it might be difficult to choose exactly what Sidi road shoe to get. After all, its top end models offer carbon soles and dial closures, so how different can they be? Good question. If you feel like emulating your favorite pro and have ultra-deep pockets, by all means, go for the Shots that come in at an eye-watering $550. For the rest of us with mortgages and wider than average size feet, we're better served with its Ergo 5 Mega Cycling Shoe that comes in at less than 4 Benjamins.

Compared to the outgoing Ergo 4, the 5 receives an all-new upper constructed from Sidi's Techpro, an eco-friendly synthetic leather that's durable, lightweight, and water resistant. What we like most about it is how it's secure enough to wrap around your foot comfortably offering stable pedaling yet it's supremely supple so it doesn't cause hotspots if feet swell or dials are cranked down. The 5 does continue in the Sidi Ergo tradition of mixed-media closures and instead of two Techno3 Push dials like we find on the Shot and Wire 2, the Ergo 5 mounts one up top and on the side of the forefoot in a more traditional position, while utilizing a hook-and-loop closure strap for forefoot retention. It does enjoy the same Soft Instep 4 strap that the higher-end models receive helping to reduce weight while offering up luxurious padding for riding comfort and at the rear of the shoe, its redesigned heel cup stabilizes the foot for efficient pedaling.

Sole duties are the same as the previous Ergo 4, using Sidi's Twelve Carbon composite sole which relies on a carbon reinforced nylon sole with a carbon weave plate stiffening it where needed. If you don't have your sights set on every sprint point, you likely won't notice the difference between it and the Vent Carbon on the Shot and Wire, however, the Ergo 5's composite sole goes a long way in providing better all-day comfort by taking the stiffness down a couple of rungs.

Perhaps the most enduring feature of the Ergo 5 Mega and all Sidi shoes for that matter is its legendary last, honed over decades of working with some of the world's greatest cyclists. Very few shoes are more universally praised for their comfort than Sidi and that all starts with the last. As a mega version, this one is built for cyclist needing an EE or EEE width and its 4mm wider across the ball of the foot. This adds more volume and additional features include a higher instep and a wider heel cup.

The Ergo 5 Mega is available in Matte Black and White and Black in whole and half sizes between 42 to 47 and in a size 48.

  • Sidi's venerable Ergo built on a wider last
  • Twelve Carbon composite sole blends rigidity and tuned flex
  • Soft Instep Closure System prevents hotspots across the top of the foot

I bought the Ergo 5s to replace a 20 year old pair of Sidi Megas. With over 200k miles in them they were showing their age and falling apart. The moment I slipped the Ergos on they were almost as spot on comfortable as my old Sidis that were basically molded to my feet after all those miles. Sizing is spot on, I purchased 46s and wear a 12-12.5 in all other footwear. The extra width is great, I can still dial my feet in nice and snug but come winter they have enough room for wool socks. I’ve been riding these shoes for the past four weeks and have almost 1000 miles on them. So far no issues, hopefully they last me a long time.

My last two pairs of shoes have been from Specialized (S-Works body geometry). Two knocks on those: the wheel fasteners would wear out, and because of my bunions, they were uncomfortable (even though very well ventilated) on rides longer than 30 miles. The Ergo Megas are much more comfortable for my forefoot. They don't fit quite as closely as did the S-Works shoes, but I've not noticed any slippage within the shoe when climbing. I'm not yet certain about Bidi's wheel mechanism for adjustment while riding, but that will be a long-term test. All in all, very pleased! And, a note about Competitive Cyclist. Dealing with them has been awesome. You're likely to get a bit of music-on-hold, but it's likely to be Jerry Garcia instead of some New Age aimless synthesized nonsense, and the customer service people are fantastic and know their products.

Finally got enough rides in to review these shoes. Really comfortable and light. I appreciate the ability to really tighten them the way I like. Really wonderful shoes.

Fantastic! Go MEGA!

I have used Sidi MTB and road shoes for years and years. While the regular width have always been serviceable. there have been moments of discomfort and I had to purchase a half size larger to account for width. I finally decided to purchase a pair of Mega's to see if the wider version would be any better. I was honestly shocked at how much better they fit. After more than 500 miles in 4 weeks of riding, I am sold! MEGA FOREVER!

I couldn't agree more. I too am a long time Sidi fan but have also struggled a bit on fit. I have the wire vent carbon's which after a few thousand km's have finally broken into my feet ... sort of, I use them for short rides. I have the Sidi Ergo Mega 4's and have done 8+ hours in them with no problems and I use the Dragons which are the MTB analog. If you've got wide feet, or just want some comfortable road shoes you want the Mega's. From a performance standpoint I can't see that you give anything away, race day, crank them down tight if you feel the need, they are still comfortable. I've probably got 15,000 km on my current pair and they are going strong and trust me they've not been babied in any way ... rain, snow, gravel, awesome.
