Few shoes can rival the quality, fit, and durability of Sidi's Italian-made, high-end cycling shoes. Riders enjoy season after season of reliable service due to the quality construction and the ability to replace parts when they wear out. The Drako is one of Sidi's premier mountain bike shoes, and delivers outstanding performance on all fronts. It's been proven at the World Cup level by the likes of Absalon and Schurter, ensuring those of us aspiring to ride at that level have absolute confidence in our equipment. After building up a healthy reputation of XC domination over the years, Sidi went back to the drawing board to give the Drako some updates that improve comfort and performance while shedding a bit of weight in the process. With a sleeker upper strap, a repositioned lower dial, redesigned uppers, a new heel cup, and some striking new colorways, the Drako 2 SRS Mountain Bike Shoe continues Sidi's heritage of making some of the best riding shoes on the market.
The Drako 2 sits right near the top of Sidi's lineup, just below the race-specific Tiger shoe. Both shoes share the same uber-light and uber-stiff SRS Carbon sole, the difference is that the Tiger omits the Soft Instep Closure strap at the top of the foot in favor of dual Tecno-3 dials on the tongue. This design saves some weight and makes it a bit quicker to get the shoes on or off, but the Soft Instep Closure System found on the Drako 2 allows you to adjust the side to side position of the strap for optimal comfort, while providing a bit of extra security for the top of your foot. The new closure strap is a bit sleeker and lighter, and is easily replaceable if damaged or worn out.
Comparing the Drako 2 to its predecessor, the updated version sees the lower Tecno-3 Push Dial Adjuster moved from the side of the shoe to the top of the padded tongue. The idea behind this is to provide a more secure fit and equal tension across the whole foot. Sidi also gave the Drako 2 a new heel cup that keeps your foot in an optimal position without slippage while preventing deformation of the shoe from extreme performance or prolonged pressure. The heel cup is mated to new uppers as well. The new uppers are made of the same sturdy, lightweight, weather-resistant, and eco-friendly Techpro Microfiber as the previous model, but feature a unique textured finish and new matte colors that give the Drako 2 a one-of-a-kind look.
One thing that stays the same is the MTB SRS Carbon Sole. The sole comprises a medium-modulus carbon body supplemented with SRS tread blocks and a cleat wear plate, the latter two of which are replaceable. Using a medium-modulus carbon as the base provides a slight flex along the length of the foot with no compromise to the overall rigidity of the sole, a delicate but necessary balance for top-level off-road shoes.
Sidi's heel retention device also stays the same, using an adjustable, rigid composite band that closes the shoe more securely over your heel to anchor it in place around your Achilles. No matter how much power you're pouring into the pedals, your heel will stay in place inside the shoe, even if you leave a bit of slack in the Tecno-3 lines in order to alleviate pressure across your metatarsals.

Sidi Drako 2

I typically get 7 to 10 years from my Sidi MTB bicycle shoes and my new Drako's look to continue this trend. They are very comfortable but provide the stiffness in the sole that I prefer. The ratcheting system is different on this shoe from my past 3 pairs of Sidi shoes but easy to use and provides a secure fit when pulling the upstroke. Yes, they are expensive but very well crafted with high quality materials. Knowing that I will get 7 plus years out of these the cost is justified.

Impressions after a few weeks of riding: Contrary to what others are saying, I always add a .5 euro size to Sidi's vs. other brands of mtb shoes as you can crank down the ratchet but cant go the other way. If you've never worn Sidi's, you definitely want to find a local shop to try some on (if they even stock them) first before ordering. One quirk of the Drakos is when they are new, the leather on the top of the tongue is stiff and can rub a blister on the top of your instep until it's broken it. My solution was to rub leather moisturizer on it before and after the first few rides which seemed to do the trick. I also rode them the first few times with the buckles pretty loose which helped them break in. The cleat placement also seems to need to be a bit further forward than on other shoes. 2 month update: They just keep getting better and better comfort wise after 15 or so muli-hour rides. Now its getting cold in Colorado, I'm also glad to have the extra room with the +.5 size for beefier socks. One interesting note is that the crankside end of the plastic tongue strap stuck out just enough from the leather to start catching every now and then on my crankarms which have a pretty low profile and q factor. Since I don't plan on ever adjusting the tongue position from center, I just trimmed it off, which did the trick. Overall: My last pair of Dragons lasted 8 years over 5-6 SRS sole replacements and 15K+ miles, so they are definitely durable. I get the SRS replacements off eBay for $30-35 so if you see a good price, stock up on a few. Moab seems to eat them up every year. More of the same durability here except the Drako 2's seem beefier and better built, and I really dig the blue. That said, I wish they would bring back the brighter blue leather from the late 90's-2000's Dominators. I've been riding Sidis for 25 years, these are a worthy successor to the name.

Great shoe.

Long lengthy expensive process getting to this conclusion. I have average width, no/low arch, one narrow heel. Have new pair of 1st version Drako, size 45. Ultimately too big and disconnected. Have New Shimano xc9 size 44. Very connected, very comfortable when you slip them on. You do feel the pedal though and ultimately too small after 2 hours of riding with burning toes?.but very comfortable before that. Drake 2 size 44.5, very little break in needed. Comfortable enough, better fit than Drako 1, almost as comfortable as Shimano XC9s (when you put them on). Connected, no hot spots, the sole is very stiff (like original Drako). Felt like I could use all of my leg muscles. Finally have the shoe. Love them. The half size really made the difference for me.

The fit and finish is second to non. I wear a 45 and my normal shoe size is a 10.5 and these are spot on. If ya tend to ride everything with little walking and are looking for stiff comfortable all day shoes these are your cake. If your trails require a lots of walking maybe choose something else. Now don?t get me wrong, I walk some in these and they are fine for the occasional hike a bike. Just saying If I lived In Pisgah where walking up roots, ruts and 35% grades is a daily task. I?d choose something a little more flexible.
