Racing’s all about braking.

If you’re here, then you know. Shimano’s XTR M9000 Race Brakes are some of the best brakes we’ve encountered, and we’d love for them to be on all of our bikes. The combination of low weight, consistent lever feel, and unadulterated braking power makes them sought after by XC racers, weekend warriors, and bike geeks alike. They're also compatible with the latest generation of Shimano's I-Spec design, I-Spec II. If you've got a pair of I-Spec II shift levers, you can save valuable cockpit real estate by attaching both the shift and brake levers with one clamp.

At first glance, they don’t appear that different from the previous generation, but you can’t judge a book by its cover. The caliper and master cylinder are now magnesium, and the levers are carbon fiber. Shimano dumped its Servo Wave cam in favor of a redesigned lever path that provides a smoother transition between off and on the brakes, and a more progressive feel throughout the braking process. Shimano’s also made a number of small improvements to manage heat buildup better, but recommends the new Freeza rotors for maximum performance with these brakes.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had a lot of brake sets over the years...if you want your bike to stop, use Shimano.

Easy-peasy to bleed (if needed)...I've shortened a ton of brake lines and I've NEVER had to bleed these after cutting/re-installing barb/olive...these are just simple to work with.

Light weight, great modulation/feel under braking.

Best out there

I've tried all of the modern Guide brakes (Ultimate on down) and XT's and these are the best parts of each, IMO. Love the weight and the feel of the race versions. Thought I would miss the easy adjustability of those others but once dialed in I dont find a need. Set it and forget it and lose the un-needed weight.

XTR, What else is there?

These brakes have been around for years and this version is lighter and better than all past versions. The quality and modulation is great, and its a race weight brake with the awesome stopping power. Just make sure to match with the shimano rotors. XT rotors work fine and you can find them in non-centerlock regular 6 bolt pattern.

Now I want to brake more often.

These brakes are truly incredible; lightweight, powerful, and smooth. They stop much better than my previous Hayes brake set, and what's more, they don't leak around the seals like my old brake set (no offense to Hayes, those brakes were quite old).

I've used these things in all sorts of conditions over many months and they have never failed me; they stop quickly, they stop smoothly, they stop consistently. Really, what more can you ask for?

The only problem I have now is that I love stopping with these things so much that I just brake all the way up and down the trail. Not only does it make climbing exhausting, but my buddy is always complaining about how slow I am on the way down.

stopping has never been so easy

    I just slapped these brakes on my Cannondale Scalpel Team Edition, and I immediately noticed their benefits (compared to the AVID XX brakes). These brakes are definitely one finger stoppers as opposed to having to pull with two fingers on the AVIDs. Additionally, these brakes are much easier to bleed than the AVIDs and in general require less maintenance. Pair these with some ice tech rotors and you will have super lightweight, incredible braking power.

    Amazing brakes

    There is nothing I could improve with these brakes. Every detail is accounted for, from the feel of the lever, to the modulation to the stopping power. I am coming from Avid XO, which worked great until the didn't and then Guide Ultimate, which never worked for me. These brakes do their job, are some of the lightest made, and the modulation is truly best in class. Oh, and bleeding them is super easy!

    Platinum Standard

    These are my go to brakes -- apart from changing my pads from time to time, I never worry about them. Modulation is the best on the market, and you don't sacrifice power in the process. They are competitively lightweight, and durable as all get out.

    Gold Standard of Race Brakes

    There may be slightly lighter brakes on the market, but none work as well or as reliably XTR Race do. While Shimano calls these their race brakes as opposed to their trail brakes because they lack Shimano's Servo Wave technology, you could arguably say that these give you better modulation instead of ramping up quickly, producing that "on-off" feeling that other shimano brakes (XTR Trail, XT, SLX) are known for. Plus, the few less grams than XTR trail never hurt either.

    Love the consistent power and security

    It's winter here but I've been able to put a couple good rides on these brakes in combination with the RT-99 Freeza rotors. First impressions are that these are very powerful, with a consistent power that does not fade under heavy braking- 20-30minutes with rock drops and decreasing radius switchbacks. My last pair of XTR 985 race brakes worked flawlessly for over 3 years with the only maintenance being changing the brake pads a couple times per season!

    This is the lightest strongest brake set I have ever used. This stuff stops on a dime, its so light when you take it out of the box it feels almost cheap, but its not, just high quality material from a high quality company!

    when ordering a set, is the rear brake lever set to be on the left side?

    Typically the rear brake is on the right side. Some folk (often UK and moto cross over riders) prefer them swapped, but most people will prefer left as their front brake and right as their rear! Let me know if you have any other questions and I'd be happy to help!
