Why We Like The Ultegra ST-R8000 STI Shifters

Shimano's Ultegra is often thought of as a budget racer's group or one that was worthy to put on a top tier frame helping to bring the total price down. This latest version performs so flawlessly that unless you are just dead-set on Dura-Ace, you should seriously consider the Ultegra 8000 group. Because it's a serious drivetrain for serious cyclists. The Ultegra ST-R8000 STI Shifters have enough DNA from the new 9100 shifters—themselves perhaps the pinnacle of mechanical shifting—that you will have a hard time separating them as twins.

The lever body is made from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), like the 9100, but the main lever blade is also CFRP rather than the carbon fiber found on 9100. On the scale and in your wallet, you're looking at a 73g and $200 increase. Despite the different materials, the brake reach adjustment has still been increased to fit more hand sizes. Included in that price of admission is the excellent SP41 cable housing and polymer-coated stainless steel cables. The new hoods are also a direct descendant from 9100 and the texture and rubber compound make them an enjoyable hand-hold with or without gloves and during any season.

Old 105 to Ultegra

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These do in fact shift much better than my old set. It takes a lot less pressure on the lever and less deflection for the shift to occur. I have a Di2 bike, and when it's really cold and thick gloves are needed, it makes more sense to take this bike over the other. With the 105 you really had to crank the lever over to make a shift. With this, it's just a little stab of the lever and you have your gear change. Very smooth. I changed all the other components to Ultegra, so all the shifts are remarkably smooth and quiet. YMMV, but I had a ten year old bike with a short cage 105 derailleur with built in limitations. But the frame was only 900 grams and quite compliant and I felt it was worthy of the investment. Couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.

I was set on upgrading to a new bike when I found out 'Rona had foiled my plans... so I did the next best thing and upgraded my CAAD8. The bike, not typically considered a masterpiece, came out fantastic. On to the shifters, I upgraded everything to 11 speed with Ultegra ST-R8000 Shifters and R8000 front and rear derailleurs... installed myself and it came with all cables, cable housings, doohickeys and whatnots for install. This setup shifts so smoothly, it really is worth it and with everything on sale you might spend another $100 total for all 3 components vs 105. I will stick with this setup even when I finally upgrade to a new bike. It's hard for me to pinpoint the exact added benefit of each component since I upgraded all in one shot with a new bottom bracket (bbr60), 105 Crankset (highly recommend upgrading to the CORRECT size vs the usual 170mm made for a 6+ footer), Fulcrum Racing 5 wheels, Rubino Pro tires, and Ultegra cassette and chain... oh and brakes to 105 as well. All were great upgrades for me, all recommended. If I had only 1 gripe, it's that I wish the Ultegra groupset came in the same black color as the 105... just preference. My bike is white/black and gray brakes would look a bit silly...

Worthwhile upgrade

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I upgraded from 105 5700 (10 spd) to Ultegra R8000 and the difference in shifting is night and day. Shifting is light and crisp and the system has never struggled on a shift. The difference is most noticeable on the front chainring shifts from the small ring to the big ring. Whereas the 105 required effort and time to upshift, the Ultegra upshift is almost imperceptible other than the fact that I'm going a whole lot faster. The right shifter now allows you to downshift 2-3 cogs by clicking the lever all the way in. This is really handy for compensating for a front chainring upshift. Unfortunately, you can't upshift multiple cogs in the rear the other way. The shift levers feel really good in the hands and the ergonomics just works. The box comes with a full set of brake and shift cables including housing and hardware. Don't go out and buy your own.
