Di2 Remote Switch SW-R610
One of the driving forces behind the electronic shifting concept is the ability to place buttons in places that are impossible with conventional cable and housing systems. Designed to be mounted in the drop section underneath the handlebar tape, the Di2 Remote Switch can also be placed in other locations.
When placed in the drops, however, it allows you to make gear changes when climbing or cheating wind. A small hole can be cut into the bar tape so the shifter tabs are accessible. The Di2 Remote Switch is not backwards compatible with the Dura-Ace 7970 Di2 derailleurs or wire kits. It compatible with 6870, 8050, 9070, and 9150 Di2 systems. It plugs into the second port of the Di2 levers, and can not be used in conjunction with TT shifters.

If you ride in the drops you should get the sprint shifter buttons. They are not just for mad dashes to the line at the end of a crit. These things are fantastic for holding a tuck and punching wind as well. Being able to flick through gears with your thumbs means holding position with less energy. Sounds kinda silly to think these little buttons can save energy but they do. You will find yourself in the drops more often and going faster with better aero more efficiently because you will shift a lot more often due to ease of use. More shifting means staying at optimal cadence more often which translates to more efficiency in a long training session or race. The downside is they don't work with Ultegra Di2 8000 series disc shifters. I was so impressed with these on my rim brake road bike that I picked up the more expensive SW-R9150 to use on my disc brake CX bike as well for gravel racing. Sprint shifters are overpriced IMO. They should be about 30% less than they cost but I will pay the price anyway for the benefits. They are worth the investment. They make riding and training and racing better.

Such a nice touch, Can be accessed from the hoods with your thumbs if you're like me and climb in the hoods mostly.

Not just for sprinters!
Aside from the Di2 system itself, the remote shifters are the best improvement I have made to a bike! Being able to seamlessly shift the rear derailleur while keeping your hands comfortably in the drops, these are only way to fly. Mount them wherever it's comfortable, plug and play!

How long is the cable attached to it? I'd like to run them under the tops of the bars fairly close to the stem.

Hi Dan, I had this in mind too, but the cable is not quite long enough. I believe this was somewhat by design, as Shimano has the SW-R600 Climbing switch designed for the upper bars. I have seen the sprint buttons mounted right by the hoods to mimic Campy ergonomics.

These units actually plug into the shifters and not the junction box. You will have to unwrap your bars and pull the hoods back to install them. The Ultegra 6870 and 9070 alike have three ports for cables, of which these plug into the bottom port especially made for sprinter shifters. The set here comes with two shifters, replacement double sided tape strips, and a template to cut your bar tape to size. Hope this helps.
