    Good enough

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Overall good enough for the price. If got me through a week long trip in Belize for bonefish. The rod is a bit soft when casting, but was fine when a fish was on. The reel is small so retrieval was tedious as expected. The drag could be tighter but you get what you pay for!

Got this for a killer deal and figured I couldn't lose. And I didn't. I'm a totally new fly fisherman and am still very low on the steep learning curve. A guide told me to splurge on nice boots and waders and not the rod and reel. While you CAN spend a fortune on that stuff, this rod and reel combo have been working just fine for me. The reel is pretty smooth, rod is light and goes together easy. Comes with storage tube also.

I did have an issue where I dropped the rod on a black sand beach in Yellowstone and some grit got into the reel. I opened it up and cleared it out and boom, good as new.

The only downside seems to be the reel doesn't pop apart easy like the metal ones, so you can't just switch spools on it. But if you're new to fly fishing or want a backup rod / reel, this will more than suffice.

For the price it’s not bad. The rod is decent with good action and the hard case is good enough to keep it decent. The reel is where this one lacks. The drag is sloppy with the gear set up being on the one plastic side. The drag index is a ball detent riding on the bare plastic and is prone to slipping and jamming. The last thing I want to do on the water is disassemble my reel because my drag is stuck. I wouldn’t use this reel as the backup to my backup.

Like I said, not bad for the price. It will catch fish but if you want a good starter kit get the fly outfit from Cabela’s. About the same quality rod with a more reliable reel at a comparable price (at full price). The Cabela’s kit also comes with more gear.

    Unanswered Question

Is this just the rod or the complete outfit with reel, line, etc.?
