Ordering my second pair

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:

I am a long time scout leader and have had several different types and styles of books over the years. This is the first time that I will be ordering a second pair of the same boot. These boots have severed me very well for weekend camping trips and light backpacking adventures. I have also used these around the house and at work for days that I need a boot. The reason for the second pair is that the soles are starting to separate from the bottom, other then that, they are beat up, but fine. They are the most comfortable boot that I have ever owned and I look forward to getting my second pair soon.

Good boot w/ a fundamental flaw

Alright i've put a year and a few hundred miles into this boot so I figure it's time I leave a review. Hopefully this is helpful High Level: Good cushioning, comfortable, durable, and generally great BUT a borderline dangerous lack of grip on wet (or even sometimes dry) rocks leaves me unable to recommend these Strengths: I've taken this boot up and down trails mostly in the northeast, for both weekend backpacking and dayhikes. Regardless of the event, the boot always felt comfortable (expect for on wet rocks, which I'll get to later). It strikes a good balance between a light dayhiker and a more serious boot, leaving me comfortable throwing a 30# pack on and doing a few dozen miles without second thinking it (obviously it's not a heavy backpacking boot, and if you're looking to trek serious weight or need a ton of support you should look elsewhere). It's proven to be durable too, and I've had no issues with the water getting in. All around i've enjoyed the boot and would easily recommend it for dayhikes to weekend backpacking except for the following... Gaps: There's no way around it, this boot's grip on wet rocks is just scary. I'm a generally athletic and surefooted 20 something year old, and i've never had my feet come out from under me like they have in these boots on off-grade wet (or even sometimes dry) rocks. More than once i've watched my GF shoot across something in her Danners (which should be cheaper boots by all account) only to watch me slip out and have to crawl across. The last time it happened I almost smacked my head on a rock, and had hang for a while to catch my composure. Maybe this sounds dramatic to some, but a tumble in the backcountry can turn serious quick and I'd want to feel comfortable trusting my boots. For this reason, I unfortunately can't recommend these boots to anyone

These were comfortable right out of the box. Good quality leather uppers and quality construction overall. I used these for early deer season hunting recently, and they were great. Lightweight, and waterproof. I like these boots because they are form fitting and agile. They feel like they?re part of me. I live and spend my time in the Adirondacks so it?s a very diverse climate. I am confident these will do great in most active conditions all year round aside from heavy deep snow. Tread is aggressive but not bulky or obnoxiously stiff. These are Sturdy, supportive, and flexible. I condition all my boots in sno-seal because of the diverse climates and is helps with waterproofing. It darkens the leather to almost black, but with a set of paracord laces, they look great. Classic but modern looks and technology. Will recommend and buy again.

Good but not great

This Scarpa leather boot is a good all around boot, and therein lies the problem for me. It is a great looking boot, that can be easily revived with a little mink oil. They have only gotten more comfortable with time, and of course a descent pair of insoles. The stock insole is very, very hard. My issue is with the outsoles of these boots. The outsoles are very hard, so they feel a little like a backpacking boot, but then the grip is less than aggressive, as it is not deep at all. I have also found that this hard sole makes them less than optimum for slippery surfaces like wet rocks and logs. With a more aggressive and "sticky" sole, these boots would be fantastic. As they are I would only rate them as a light hiker at best. For $200, I expected more.

When these arrived I was excited to try on these reasonably priced leather boots. Unfortunately within a few minutes of walking around in the house the seam that runs from the arch to the front of the ankle started rubbing my foot. I didn't notice this in pictures. Not sure if I just didn't notice or design changed but very noticeable within minutes and didn't want to take the chance that they wouldn't "break in"

Flawless Boot

Familiarity:

Even out of the box, the Scarpa Terra GTX is extremely comfortable, and the fit just gets better with ever mile. No painful break-in period whatsoever. The construction is sound - everything I expect from Scarpa. While the soles look burly, the foot feel on the ground is actually quite sensitive (in a good way), and this boot grips any surface like a mountain goat...even wet ocean rocks. Sizing is accurate, but it helps to spend the time dialing in the exact sizing for your foot as even a half-size difference does affect a good boot fit. I love the leather, as it's both durable and holds up on rough materials, and can blend into casual clothing with style. If the leather starts looking a bit dry, I'll give it a polish with golden mink oil and they look better than the day I opened the box.
