Chameleon Carbon 29 S Complete Mountain Bike
As the longest running model in Santa Cruz's lineup, the Chameleon has a long heritage as hardtail that can adapt to everything from 24-hour racing to ripping hot laps at your local trails. The current generation enjoys the same playful handling and renowned versatility the Chameleon has always been known for, but is now offered with a carbon fiber frame that delivers a more responsive ride and a significant 250-gram weight savings compared to the aluminum version. With a lighter and faster carbon fiber frame paired with unstoppable 29-inch wheels, the Chameleon Carbon 29 S Complete Mountain Bike is ready to rack up the mileage as your go-to trail bike, or as a highly-capable bikepacking adventure rig. Santa Cruz even includes triple-bolt cargo cage mounts under the downtube, a huge perk for multi-day adventure enthusiasts.
From backcountry epics to backyard jump sessions, the Chameleon is easily adaptable to suit its environment. With a low-slung bottom bracket and moderately slack geometry, this bike handles tricky descents and the occasional day at the bike park, but is equally at home racking up serious miles on an all-day sufferfest, too. It's offered here as a speedy 29er for big rides deep in the mountains, but features an interchangeable dropout system that lets you switch to high-volume 27.5+ tires for unwavering traction and flotation in loose, chunky terrain. Also, these interchangeable dropouts allow you easily change from a geared drivetrain to a singlespeed setup, should you desire a no-nonsense drivetrain that teaches you to focus on technique and channeling raw power to clean those tough climbs and technical sections of trail. Note, you'll have to purchase separate dropouts from Santa Cruz if you want to change wheel sizes or convert to singlespeed use.
This "S" build kit gives you a trustworthy selection of parts, including a 120-millimeter Fox Performance 34 Fork for stiff, confident tracking over the rough stuff and plush absorption of rocks and roots on the trail. SRAM's GX Eagle 1x12 drivetrain gives you a massive gear range with its 10 to 50-tooth cassette, allowing you to tackle a wide variety of terrain while enjoying smooth shifting, infallible chain retention, and quiet operation. Sturdy Race Face rims are paired with bombproof DT Swiss hubs to keep you rolling true across even the most rugged terrain. The package is rounded out with a RockShox Reverb Stealth dropper for getting the seat out of the way on those steep descents where you'd benefit from a more aggressive body position.

Amazing Trail Bike

I've been riding this bike for a few weeks now, and every time I get on it I love it a little more. The shifters are on point, and the gearing has never left me needing more in either spectrum (low for climbing or high for descending). The frame and wheels are stiff and result in great power transfer, this bike practically climbs itself. The tires are big enough to provide you some comfort and cushion without robbing power. The fork works just fine. The brakes are a little weak, although they are getting better as they break in. Stoppies require a lot of force and some assistance by unweighting your ass. The weak brakes could be a benefit and help prevent you from losing traction on your front tire by over braking into a corner, so I have grown to appreciate that a little bit.

Great bike if you decide to switch to SS

I have been riding single speed for about 8 years and decided it was time for a new bike. This bike was a perfect choice. I ordered the carbon S model. I have been riding with the gears that came with it, and been having fun until my SS conversion shows up. It is a very solid frame and light weight. It is a hoot to ride every time. I am curious to see how it will be as SS. The only complaints are the brakes feel a bit inadequate and squeak every since the first ride. Also the steering stem is a little short. The stem makes it very twitchy on the down hills (could just be me). 80 mm stem coming soon. Good to know that this thing climbs like a goat and the Fox Performance fork is surprising good on the shutters. All around very happy. Backcountry has been good to deal with as well. Thanks guys!

This bike is currently listed as ?on sale? for 3,299. But 3,299 is the listed MSRP on the Santa Cruz web site. How is this a sale? When the bike is back in stock do you plan to sell it above MSRP? I was eager to purchase to take advantage of the sale price but now I feel a bit misled. Is this kind of practice common at backcountry?
