Most versatile and durable Boot ever.

After one deployment to the sandbox for 6 months, 2 Colorado Elk seasons, 2 trips to Costa Rica, and countless miles on pavement and trails I am finally retiring this pair of hikers/shoes. This is my 2rd pair and the X Ultra Mid is nothing short of the most versatile, longest lasting, non-Gortex mid top shoe from Salomon. It works great as a trail running shoe if you have ankles that are played out or lightweight do anything jungle boots. They dry extremely fast if they get wet and breathe extremely well. Which is especially important in the SE US, any jungle environment or the Serengeti where its hot. Outside of the Quest 4D non-Gortex boot (Forces Collection only) this is the best option for a Salomon boot that isn't Gortex that will punch above and beyond its own grade.

This is my 5th pair

I love these shoes! Yes, like other reviews the laces come un-tied to easily. That’s resolved by using a double knot. I have worn all of these pretty much every day since I first discovered them. Great quality and long lasting shoe.

Love these.

This is my third pair of Salomon footwear. They were comfortable right out of the box which has been my previous experience from Salomon. They are lightweight and the construction is spot on. I live in NW Florida so I needed something breathable. These Aeros fit that bill quite nicely. Salomon is my go-to for outdoor footwear. There is absolutely no cons with the shoe itself. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because of the laces. After only a half mile or so, the laces keep stretching and coming loose. I think the material itself is a bit stretchy. I've probably put 10 miles on the shoes and the problem persists. Please take this as some thoughtful input and use a different lacing material. I will be replacing the laces as soon as I can find something suitable.

Great boot, lousy laces

I bought those boots because they were comfortable, good looking and at a fair price. Love the breathability of the boot as well. Lightweight, great sole but…. the laces look great but don’t stay tied!!!! So lame for such a nice boot. Laces are not good at all. It doesn’t matter how tight you tie them, they come unknotted within a few steps. Another lousy aspect of the laces inability to stay out is that the laces start to tighten down the boot and they loosen at the top. For the price and brand, you would think that the laces would be of high quality as it is an integral part of the shoe.

Slimmer Width

Bought these as a light weight pair of boots that I wear while working in the ER. High arches and weak ankles… have had one surgically repaired and other needs it. I prefer an above the ankle, supportive boot and have been wearing a similar style/pair for years. These look almost identical, but seem a little snug width wise. Just a little snugger, not uncomfortable… may just need to break them in. Otherwise great, size fit otherwise good, colors nice and support is awesome. Pays to take care of your feet! Especially when I’m on them all day!

X Ultra Aero Mid, after 3 months, Oct 2021

Pro: NOT GTX. Very breathable. Good summer shoe for desert southwest or hot/dry climates. Con: Laces do not stay tied due to being slightly elastic. Have not tried a difference set of laces yet but plan to. Pro: Tread pattern and flexible sole provide very good traction on loose ground. Con: Very narrow, wish there was an option for a wide size. The shoe has eventually flattened/stretched out so it doesn't press into the top of my foot after 3 months of almost daily use. I went up from my normal 9.5US to a 10US to get a little more width. First 2 months the tongue would rub the inside of my ankle bone. I tried moving the tongue to cover more the the ankle bone but that made things worse, moving it off the ankle bone (biasing to the outside of the ankle) alleviated the rubbing/pressure. Eventually the tongue compressed enough were the pressure reduced. Con: Black color gets hot in the sun. I wish Salomon would make this in a lighter color, brown/tan maybe, so it's not as hot on desert hikes. I would recommend, but anticipate an extended breaking period if you have a wider foot. Be ready to ditch the laces.

Tough as hell

I’ve had two sets of these and I’ve had thousands of miles in each of them, they are my go to boots in the winter, never go on a trip without them.

Perfect for Hot Dry weather

Pros. Extremely breathable. Can feel every breeze cool of the feet. Extreme grip. Can climb rocks and mountains. Light and comfortable enough to actually run, but still more stable and supportive than a trail running shoe. Heel locks nicely. Cons... What makes these boot great in the Desert can also be the down fall if you get real extreme and off trail for extended time. Thorns get through the sole easy and eventually you can feel every rock underneath. (For my Extreme off trail desert hike and climbs, I use Salomon Quest 4d.). The laces come undone too easily. The simple act of sitting or driving they still come undone and need to constantly be reretired. As comfy as they are,, there is a pressure point in top of my foot. But my foot is stupid shaped and this is common with other hiking boots as well. I changed the way I lace these boots and its helps. But not sure this a "Salomon" problem as much as we all just have different shaped feet and every boot is a little different.

Killer boot

Great boots but black is not the best color for warm/hot climates. Khaki or coyote would be the Bees knees.Thanks.

Great for warm weather hikes

I’ve had my boots since January 2019 and love them so much! They’re great for hiking in the warm AZ desert. Just need to be carful about thorns on overgrown trails. I should have bought more pairs when they were available because I love them so much. I even have the GTX version for places out of the state that get rain. I’ve really worn them down and hope Salomon comes out with the X Ultra Mid 4 Aero. I don’t want to switch brands, but my feet need to breath! Is there a release day for 4s in an aero version?
