Why We Like The X Ultra 4 GTX Wide Hiking Shoe
Salomon's signature line of trail shoes returns with powerful upgrades, and this version is built to fit hikers and runners with wider feet. The new chassis protects ankle articulations on the outer foot, providing extra stability without limiting mobility, so we feel even more confident when navigating technical terrain. The Contagrip MA rubber sole has tire-like lugs that provide us with improved traction on a wide variety of surfaces. To make these shoes the ultimate trail companion, Salomon added GORE-TEX waterproofing to keep feet dry from the outside and inside.

Great traction, well made, Break-in took
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- 12
These hiking shoes have very aggressive soles that provide better traction than most hiking shoes. They are well made, look good and are easy to get on and off. They do not have much (any) cushioning so they may not be the best choice for anyone who plans to use them frequently on pavement. For the first dozen or so hikes these shoes were not comfortable as they pressed on a spot on the high bone on the top of my foot. It is getting better, but these shoes are taking longer to break in than I expected which is why I am only giving 4 stars.

Painful
I've been getting Salmon soft boots for years. I tried this pair for a simple walk and was unable to walk without pain for a week. They'd pressed the top of the foot something fierce, plus they rubbed my small toe knuckle raw. Dunno why these were different. Going to try the shoe expander in them before I wear them again.

Upgrade from last model
Last longer and more durable. Only thing was, I have a wide foot, and this time it was a big difference in a bad way. But since I always get insoles with new shoes it wasn’t a problem

Hiking shoes
I am not loving the elastic web on the shoe which replaced the tongue of the shoe on my previous ones.Other than that I am happy with the shoe.

Exquisite shoes
My husband has neuropathy and balance issues with his feet. These shoes arrived and they are perfect because they are wide, sturdy and so stylish. Highly recommend.

A step backwards
I had a pair of the Ultra 3s and thought they were an amazingly comfortable shoe. I get the 4s and it is more than a cosmetic change. Nothing wrong with the quality of the product but nowhere near as comfortable to me.

Flawed design
As already mentioned numerous times, these shoes cause significant pain at the base of the big toe as your flex your foot. Each step presses the lacing system into the top of your foot. Should not be sold in this current design!! Avoid at all costs.

disappointed
I bought these a month ago and I'm so disappointed. They look great but are incredibly uncomfortable, in particular where the shoe creases around the toes. I combined them with thin running socks, so perhaps a thicker sock might solve the problem. Right now I can't look at them.

Great outdoor shoe for rainy weather!
With easy lace up system. IF you can find the right size, they usually fit like a glove, speaking from years of purchases/uses.
