Why We Like The X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Wide Hiking Boot

The Salomon Women's X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Wide Hiking Boot offers the same lightweight support on rugged trails as the regular version, but in a slightly wider fit. At a little over 14 ounces it won't weigh us down, but also doesn’t sacrifice weight for durability and lasting comfort. Its Contagrip sole provides dependable traction on rough trails, while the EVA midsole and Ortholite footbed reduce shock and thus minimize foot fatigue. Salomon's Advanced Chassis ensures we have lateral support on uneven terrain, and the Sensifit liner keeps our foot comfortably cradled as we pick our way through boulder fields or loose scree.

Almost crippled me

This is probably the single most uncomfortable shoe I have ever worn in my entire life. My first and last experience with this brand. These are ridiculously narrow. I bought an 8.5 wide and it was almost an inch narrower than my other 8.5 wide shoes of a different brand. I wore them on a short walk to the wooded area down the street. Flat, easy walk for the most part and I have walked it many times much longer than I did today. My feet were instantly hot and overheated in these shoes and they felt too tight. After an hour walk, I was on my way home and I had to sit down several times to give my feet a rest. I have had sore feet before but never that sore. I wanted to crawl the last 40 ft to my door but somehow I manay. I peeled them off and the outside of my foot and pinky toe were all red. My big toes felt like someone had taken a hammer to them. I was hobbling when I tried to walk after taking them off. I finally put my other brand walking shoes on to get some comfort and support.

Not usual salomon quality

Purchased in April, 4 months later mesh on top of shoe started splitting open. I've been wearing exclusively salomon running and hiking shoes for the last 20+ years. Hoping this was just a bad pair rather and that the shoes aren't all getting cheaper

Finally

I have tried TEN pairs of hiking boots this winter to replace my 3 year old Salomons. Apparently the toe box in Salomons has gotten significantly more narrow. It took this wide shoe to fit…I have never worn a wide size before. But, happy to finally have found a shoe I can wear, since I DO love the Salomon footbed. The colors aren’t my fav, but the fit works.

Somewhat disappointed

I've worn Salomon boots for years and had to switch to another style when the Quest Prime GTX (best boot ever!) disappeared. The X Ultra 3 was so comfortable at first that I bought a second pair just in case they disappeared too. I'm very disappointed in the X Ultra 3 boot. After about 50 miles, the boots feel flimsy; I feel every rock and root underfoot. The worst is that there is absolutely no grip on the soles. I've slipped on all sorts of surfaces and have no confidence that my feet will stick. I will be returning the extra pair. Several friends have switched to these boots and have the same comments. Please bring back the Quest Prime GTX!

These boots have a design flaw

I bought these boots last year and threw them in the trash yesterday. When I bought the boots, I read a negative review about these boots making the reviewer fall because of a design flaw. I thought, yeah okay, wasn't convinced enough not to buy the boots. Since, I have fallen about 5 times just regularly walking. I'm athletic, not new to walking - the reason it's the shoes' fault is because the triangle design on the instep of the shoe gets caught on the metal hook on the ankle of the opposite shoe. So it's catching your foot like you have your shoe laces tied together. I'm glad I wasn't wearing these shoes around steep areas, because this error in design could gravely injure or even kill someone. Yesterday I was walking my dog on the sidewalk and lo and behold, the shoes got caught together again and I did a superman fall - head shot forward, landed on my face. I turned around and went back home, threw these boots in the trash, and put on my Oboz. Y'all need to fix this problem before you sell more of these boots or end up with a lawsuit.

An absolute NO with this midrise Salomon

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
10.5
Height:
5' 8"
Weight:
180

I've worn Salomon's Quest Gore-Tex hiking boots for 6 straight years and needed a new pair. I thought I'd try this different, midheight boot because it boasted a wide foot bed, lighter weight and same durability. I loved the color, the width, the sole traction, but once I tried lacing these boots I realized the midrise height offered nothing but frustration for me. The tongue of the boot is floppy and won't stay positioned, the top lacing grommets were too far set back, the laces too short for proper tying and double-knotting and the midrise height doesn't allow enough stability for a day of long, high hills. I'm sending these back and I'm buying the Salomon Quest 4 Gore-Tex boots instead.

Best boot

I am a hiker that completed my adk 46 and working on the northeast 115- I love these boots no blisters - good traction -support for the foot and ankle - very great toe protection and they are really waterproof - I’ve have foot surgery last winter and have zero pain ! Will buy again and again

Fabulous Fit for fat feet

I am rating 5 stars with my initial review. I have only put 20 miles on these, but I've climbed 1400' at a time, stepped into a creek when I missed the log and just walked on loose rock and trail. All have been in the mountains of Idaho. Zero break-in period. My foot stayed dry, even though I fully stepped into the water. They are new, so I'm sure that feature will wear out, if previous Solomon experience proves true. I have 2 pairs of Pathfinders(?) but not the wide foot profile. I hike with my toes up and lose toenails all the time. In my running shoes or my pathfinders, my toes get abused. With these guys... and I had to look for an available pair...my feet are comfy. I wear a 7-7.5, always sized up for running shoes and my Pathfinders are 7.5's, so reading reviews, I gambled and bought 7.5. Perfect fit for med weight socks. I'm short, so I like the ankle length, it's functional and protective. So far, the laces (some have complained, I just double knot), the toe box plastic (still intact, but I'll watch and detract stars is need), have all worked great. For reference, I wear a 7- 7.5 shoe and boot. I always order up a size for athletics. I only went to a 7.5 for these and with the wide width, they are PERFECT for me. I'm 5', 110lbs. Terrain is dry northern mountain areas (elevation, rocks, shale, gravel). Why Solomon only does a couple wide width shoes irritates me. I had to really look elsewhere to find a pair of these.

Glue

Size Bought:
9.5
Height:

Weight:

Love the color and perfect size. I’m usually a size 9 but ordered 9.5 and they fit perfectly. The only thing that upset me was that there was glue from the factory stuck on top of the shoe. It doesn’t look like I am able to remove it at all. Very upset paying this much for some hiking boots only for them to have a big glob of glue right on top.

So comfortable

I didn’t actually get these for hiking, I’m on my feet all day at work and needed something supportive to help my chronic leg and foot pain. These have helped so much. I’ve worn them the past two winters (10-12 hours a day, 4 or 5 days a week), and they are still going strong. It’s just unfortunate that these are much too warm to wear during the summer, and I can’t find anything similar in a lower profile, more breathable version to wear during the hotter months (please make more wide options!)
