Whether they're runners or boots, Salomon's footwear always has a speed-oriented, thoughtful design, and the Men's X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Hiking Shoe is certainly no exception. The X Ultra is supportive and lightweight, with an Advanced Chassis that stabilizes the lightweight, breathable upper to keep you moving on the trail like you weren't carrying such a heavy backpack. Salomon backed this X Ultra with Gore-Tex Performance Comfort for reliable waterproofing and amplified breathability for trekkers who really like to move through wet weather in search of sunnier skies.

  • Quicklace closure keeps your foot in place quickly and easily
  • Synthetic upper fights off moisture while remaining breathable

Salomon has addressed the significant lacing problem with my last pair of these shoes, where the shoe uppers almost immediately began to wear out at the lace attachment points. Because the rest of the shoe design was bomber and was my “go-to” hiking shoe for all conditions except hot weather, I decided to try another pair, this time dialing in the fit a little better. As Salomons in this line (and the comparable trail running shoe line) have always run narrow, I hunted for a wide version. The pair I received were not wider, but certainly taller, in the forefoot area. This was not helpful, especially as the speedlace system does not allow one to micro-adjust any part of the shoe through alternate lacing patterns. Also, the tongue of the shoe was redesigned, rendering the lace keeper “pocket” unusable. Last, and one of the primary reasons I bought this shoe in the past, the rubber compound in the sole seems to be different— less grippy and more firm than in previous contra grip versions. This made me far less sure-footed on my first real hike out the door, even on granite stones. While likely more durable, I would sacrifice some of this durability any day for more grip while scrambling.

Doesn't last for long haul

Bought these for my son 3 years ago. After each summer of hiking had to replace the ridiculously constructed laces. Last summer, one of the fabric loops on the first "rung" of laces wore through. This summer, 3 more had worn through, and now the shoes cannot be laced up adequately. Warranty is not adequate.

Best Seller!

As a Salomon employee, the X Ultra is one of my go-to hiking shoes. The low is a great option when I feel like i'm not carrying a heavy pack, and don't feel like I need extra ankle support. The grip and stability is perfect for evening walks on the backyard trails, or longer more technical hikes. Watch the below video for more info!

Could you replace the quick lace with a standard shoe lace?
