    Ultra fast and ultra tough.

When the trail gets hairier than a gorilla's back, the Salomon X Ultra 2 GTX Men's Hiking Shoe rolls through without even noticing the gnar. It sports the same rugged construction as the standard X Ultra 2—a non-marking Contagrip sole, foot-hugging Quicklace system, and Salomon's supportive Advanced Chassis—but with the added protection of a Gore-Tex Performance Comfort waterproof and breathable membrane. You can splash through puddles and conquer muddy trails without worrying that your feet will get soaked, and you still have the comfort of the X Ultra's Ortholite sockliner and cushy EVA midsole protecting your foot from rough and technical terrain. Salomon also included an EVA footbed and molded shank for extra comfort and protection, along with foot-supporting Sensifit construction for a snug, comfortable fit that will have you moving like a magician when things get challenging.

    • Trail runners for all-weather training
    • Waterproof Gore-Tex seals out rain and mud
    • Ortholite sockliner wicks away sweat
    • Injected EVA midsole absorbs impact
    • EVA footbed and molded shank for support
    • Non-marking Contagrip sole for traction
    • Quicklace system for easy on and off
    • Item #SAL00D1

With so many options through Backcountry, it was difficult to decide on one pair of hiking shoes. I had good luck with Salomon in the past, so I punched the "Add To Cart" button on the X Ultra 2 GTX after reading and watching several positive reviews. Backcountry was true to form with their two-day delivery and I put the Salomons on as soon as I received them. Zero complaints on these shoes. I was most concerned with the Salomons fitting "true to size" since other hiking shoes I've tried seem too small in my normal size, which is a 12. The problem with that is if I have to go a size up, it is usually to a 13 since there are very few manufacturers making 12.5's. Most 13's are too loose for me so I was very happy when the size 12 Salomons fit great right out of the box - perfect fit for me.

I read a few complaints on the quick lace system, but I really like it for both the convenience and the modern look. I particularly like that you can tuck the excess lacing and clamp into the tongue.

Again, I have zero complaints on these shoes and I am very pleased with my purchase. I will definitely purchase Salomon products in the future and use Backcountry when I do. Thank you Backcountry!

    Not the shoe for me

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I got this shoe is hopes of having a lighter weight hiking shoe, and reading all of the great reviews. While I liked the aggressive nature of the tread, and the waterproofing nature of the shoe, I was a little skeptical of the quick lace ups. I still ordered them, and wore them in the house for a few hours to see if they would work,, and even with the light walking around did not feel very comfortable on the heels. I don't know if it was from the quick lacing or the shoe itself, but I returned for the boots, and I'm much more satisfied with those.

    Misleading color

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The shoe is fine so far. I went with the black/autobahn/pewter color and it is lighter grey color than the picture represents. Also the grey lines around the "triangle" patterns are actually more of a blue than the pic represents. So aside from the slight color discrepancies, it's still a good looking shoe and I decided to keep it...as for now, it simply feels like a new shoe. Haven't broken it in quite yet.

    Very bad shoe

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: medium
    • Height: 5'5"
    • Weight: 154lbs

Surprising that it has some many positive reviews for this shoe which made me but this . Reason for one star as I can not give lower than this
Small toe box and bad fit all around.

    Great Gear

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 6'
    • Weight: 176lbs

I've use this in a couple of hikes in the mountains. They are pretty confortable. Also I've used them under the rain and they will keep you dry. I'm pretty happy and would recommend them

Great Fit Right Out of Box

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 11
    • Height: 6'3"
    • Weight: 170lbs

This has been a great hiking shoe so far! I took it right out of the box and went for a nice 3 mile hike. It took a quick second for my feet to get used to the new foot bed, but there was no rubbing or uncomfortable spots! The Gore-Tex is great! I have walked through a couple of babbling brooks and no wet feet! The toe box is great as well! Super sturdy and tough/re-enforced outer shell and lots of space for those downhill climbs. Overall I love the shoe and would highly recommend!

    Great shoe

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 6'3"

Just pulled the trigger on these for day hiking in hot weather. The lack of ankle support isn't missed on well maintained trails, and the improvement in ventilation is very welcome in the summer months. The sole is grippy and works well on a variety of trail conditions. Love the Solomon quick lace system. I'd buy them again for sure.

    Lightweight and Rugged

    • Size Bought: 9.5 M
    • Height: 5'11"

These shoes are fantastic. Within a day of wearing, the shoes are comfortable enough to hike in. Do note, they take a little wearing to get comfortable. I found the laces to be a little touchy with pressure and tension during this period. I took them on a 9 mile hike ontop Grand Mesa in Colorado after getting them comfortable. They did great going through rocks, mud, and residual snowpack. Going up and down hills was no problem with these. The GoreTex kept the shoes from soaking up the melted snow. The tread did not hold onto mud, no loss of traction. At the end of my hike, my feet did not feel beaten by the trail or sore. During my hike, I also carried a 20 pound pack. While not a hiking boot by any means, these shoes supported the lighter pack being carried. These shoes are a great purchase.

    Update 21 AUG 2017:
Been using these most of the summer for casual wear and for numerous hikes. Even on long days up at the Sunrise Ski Park in Arizona hiking around, I haven't had any issues with blistering or my feet getting wet from creeks or morning dew. Love this shoe! Quick note: if you run the laces too tight, they will start to creak. Just loosen them a bit and the creaking goes away. Definitely not a deal breaker though.

    Unbreakable and comfy

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Has a bit of a break-in period, but gets soft around the edges pretty quick. Great support and damn they are comfy.
Was crossing small rivers, walking under the snow and rain and felt good :) You know that feeling when cold water touches your shoe, but your feet stays dry no matter what? Love it. 10/10 would hike again.

    Great shoe!

I have worn these for two years until the Gore-Tex on the right shoe failed. However, I have hiked, ran muddy trails, and just knocked about with these shoes for two years. Other than the Gore-Tex failure and a soggy sock a few days back, these shoes still feel great. The tread is still in great condition as is the upper. I have been really pleased with how the lacing system has worked. Like other reviewers I was a bit hesitant. However, I can say they have kept the shoe comfortably snug on my feet for all sorts of excursions.

While I am not going to retire my current pair from hiking, I am going to retire them from soggy conditions. I have already ordered another pair to remedy the hole in capability.

    Great for hiking.

Since delivery of these shoes, I've been on several day hikes. With or without packs/rucks, these shoes have been a pleasure to hike in. I've hiked steep and level terrain through dry and wet conditions yet these shoes have weathered well and the shoe tread pattern has maintained excellent traction even on muddy inclines/declines.

Salomon makes top of the line hiking shoes and hiking boots. I own several of their boots and those are excellent as well. I highly recommend this brand.

    Best shoe ever

Great all around shoe. The goretex liner will keep you nice and dry, but will also breathe. No more moist feet, which is a huge plus.

    Best shoe I've owned.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 11.5
    • Height: 5'11"

I will def buy another pair of these when the time is ready.

I've used these for hiking, trail riding, and everday use.
Over 1-2 years the gortex is still strong and looks great.
    The grip works very well.
The lacing system has NOT givin me any problems, very durable (I had my concerns at first). I enjoy the easy lace up and how it tucks away under the tab. It keeps the laces free of anything that might snag them.
fit was perfect right out of the box.
Waterproof - Never had wet feet.

As much as I've used these I'm surprised they're not as worn as they should be. (compared to other shoes I've owned)

Solomon shoes are the way to go. For sure. Don't ever doubt these.

    Outstanding!

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

I got these for my Dad for an upcoming trip to Africa. He specifically asked for Salomon's based on past experience. Outstanding comfort right out of the box! No issues with fit, rubbing, laces etc. Another great shoe from Salomon!

I got these to bum around town during the winter in Tahoe. They're great for that! I'm not super happy that the lacing system doesn't stay put and they're pretty heavy.

    Great Shoe

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 11
    • Height: 6'1"

I'm big on not wearing socks when running the trail in Goretex shoes. These, however, rubbed my heel to the point I had to put on ankle socks. The shoe strings are great with socks, but the heel moves around a bit causing a blister. Socks are a must with this shoe.

But when I did add ankle socks, they were perfect. Their support stopped a rolled ankle that I was sure would happen. The Goretex was perfect even when I walked in streams close to the ankle.

The traction was great on slippery rocks around a waterfall that's given me trouble before.

All in all, a very solid shoe for those who always wear socks hiking.

    Great Shoe

    Great fit as Usual

I have owned eight pair of Salomon running shoes over the last few years and have not found another brand to fit so well. I have tried on other brands just for a change but always end up buying Salomon.

    Awesome Shoe

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 10 1/2
    • Height: 6'2"

Love this shoe. Fits great and very comfortable as is true with most Salomon shoes. My only hesitation is in the lacing system. This is my first pair with the Quicklace system and I don't know how it will hold up. Time will tell.
