From rocks to snow and back again.

Salomon's X Alp MTN GTX Men's Mountaineering Boot isn't the footwear you'd take when pushing for Himalayan summits, but it'll more than do the job on rocky approaches, snowy ridge climbs, and glacier crossings. It forgoes a classic hard shell in favor of a light and supple nubuck leather and Cordura upper, but also packs a Gore-Tex Performance Comfort membrane for serious waterproofing and breathability, so your feet will be comfortable from step one to step bajillion. It has a flexible Mountaineering Contagrip sole, too, which provides comfort while walking on slick, rocky terrain, unlike classic stiff-soled mountaineering boots.

The X Alp is fully compatible with strap-on crampons, so you can always have extra grip when you're moving on snowy surfaces, and it's designed with a 3D Edging chassis that provides plenty of stability and edging power despite the softer sole. Salomon built in an EVA footbed and midsole, Ortholite sockliner, and foam heel padding for extra comfort and foot protection, and it included self-locking eyelets and an external heel strap to let you dial in a snug, precise, and comfortable fit. The X Alp's gusseted tongue conforms to your ankle to keep out debris and reduce pressure points, while the rubber heel and toe caps prevent discomfort from rock strikes and make sure your boot won't come apart when you really don't want it to.

    Comfortable - Wet

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 10.5
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 185lbs

Got these because I wanted something a little more rigid for side hilling with a heavy pack than my Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX backpacking boots. Like the quest, they are quite comfortable right out of the box and I appreciated the additional support they provided. They fit the purpose nicely in dry conditions and I was pretty happy with them after the first 10-15 miles.

My happiness with them waned when they first encountered wet grass. It took no time for them to soak through. My feet were completely soaked in 5 minutes and the grass wasn't even thick.

The $280 retail price on these is getting steep for the made in china build quality when you compare to Scarpa, La Sportiva, Lowa, Zamberlan, etc options out there.

    Worth noting - I got these in US size 10.5 - EU 44 2/3. I'm used to seeing EU 44.5 = US 11 and EU 45 = US 11.5.

We have four pairs of these and this is the problem with them...
have to bring extra socks and a boot cover as they get
completely soaked, even with a pouring rain we have to dump the water out of the boot after 15 minutes.

Also, I wear a custom insert and change that out.

My lite weight go-to boot !

The Salomon X Alp MTN GTX Mountaineering Boot is excellent for fast and lite approaches. The boot is supportive, and protects your foot extremely well due to the rubber rand running along the boot. Although not vibram soles, the traction which is proprietary to Salomon working very well on scree, short snow fields. I purchased the black/asphalt boot color, and must stay that they look great!

How do these compare to something like the Scarpa Charmoz as far as stiffness?

    Unanswered Question

If I want to use these as my summer hiking boots as well as mountaineering boots, will they be too warm? It says they're breathable, but also that they are good down to 10 degrees F.
