Like a mountain goat!
Second pair of Speedcrosses. The GTX version is a little stiffer material and a little noisy compared to non-GTX models. I have a love-hate relationship with the soles. I absolutely love how great of traction I get in all conditions but hate how fast they wear out.

I was looking at a different brand to help with my daily aching feet. I am 64 years old, tall, and lean. I walk a rescue dog named Cadie around two fast miles a day. Any direction she wants to walk. After the first year my Mike's mid sole broke down along with the foot pad at the ball. I bought another pair of Nike's that came in with no insole. They are still in the closet unused since my wife threw the box away. I waited year trying different insole insert pads. This pair of Soloman GTX Speedcross4"s have saved me. I am a different person walking this fast little dog and enjoying the walks again. I was told to consider this shoe by a nice girl with Backcountry online named "Kathleen" online. Thank you Kathleen. Thank you Soloman. My feet no longer ache every night or any night. JBaum

I saw someone mention that these come in wide widths. I want to get another pair because they're fantastic shoes for climbing 14ers, 13ers, and hiking in early morning wet conditions. The lug pattern, lacing system, and comfort would be perfect if they did in fact come in a wide width.

Very solid shoes
These are great winter shoes, super comfy to wear all day and great traction. Slight heel slippage but they run true to size for sure. They are a little bit narrow so if you have a wide ish foot then go for the wide version.

Good at what they do
I have a pretty strong love-hate relationship with these shoes, but they do have a place in my training. The narrow toe-box makes your step more precise, but causes blisters easily and makes my feet sore. The tread is perfect for ice and mud, and they are extremely durable. Durability and performance in winter conditions is really unmatched compared to any other shoe I've tried, so I'll just have to deal with the pain. Also, they run about .5 sizes large length-wise, and the quick lace system is an annoying trip hazard.

The extra lace tucks into the top outer portion on the tongue. Hope this helps!

Thanks Nicol, it only took me 6 months to figure that out! haha

The Speedcross is one of the best shoes I have ever worn. I've done several 14er summits in them, countless backpacking trips, and tons of runs. My only complaint is that the studs in the tread wear quickly.

Bought this as a gift for one of my friends, he said they are comfy shoes and run true to size. They also provide great traction

Comfy and Dry!
I purchased these for a recent half-marathon trail run and am very happy with the decision to go with the Speedcross GTX! These shoes are very comfortable , offer great stability and provide excellent traction on wet trails. I recommend the GTX for wet environments if you want your feet to stay dry and warm.

I bought these to replace my Nikes and i dont regret it. If you are looking for shoes for on and off the trail, look no further. I love them so much i wear them everyday. They are light, comfortable and waterproof.

The Salomon Speedcross 4 with goretex are some of the most comfortable trail running shoes I have had, for a few reasons. These shoes will stay the driest while out on the trail but never get too hot, making sure that your feet are always comfortable. You don't have to deal with laces untying, which is especially nice when you are hiking for over 5 hours. And they have a great sole, which keeps the pain away. These definitely are my favorite hiking shoe.

I bought my wife these shoes and they worked great. She stuck to rocks and trails almost to a fault at one point where the sole stuck to a boulder as she was jumping to another boulder on Rainier and it almost slowed her momentum down to the point of missing the boulder she was jumping to. I had Columbia trail running shoes and slipped quite a bit while she did not. I threw away the Columbia's and bought these. After a 8 mile trip on Rainier and a 8 mile trip on the steepest trail in the Wallowa mountains (Lake Legore) I can say these shoes are very comfortable and keep sliding to a minimum on dirt, boulders, and snow fields. A+. I did buy the Salomon low profile gaitor's that worked "ok", on steep terrain the gaiters creeped up the heel of the shoe and allowed dirt and snow to creep in from the back of the shoe.

I bought a pair for my wife and took her on some semi-technical trails. The shoes worked great, next to no sliding while I slide in my Columbia trail shoes. These shoes really stick, as an example my wife was jumping from one boulder to the other, when she went to jump her trailing foot stuck to the rock which slowed down her momentum. She almost did not make the jump to the other boulder because of this. These stick so well I just bought a pair and can't wait to use them this weekend. My wife is weird about shoes fitting but she had no issues with the fit or feel of these. I rate them a 10 out of 10.. Great job Solomon. Also bought the Solomon low cut gaiters, work great and worth the money,,

I just got these for my husband because he's such a fan of the normal speedcross. And he LOVES them. They are perfect for muddy trails, or when its slightly snowy out. A great transition season or wet day shoe with the same reliable performance as the normal speedcross!

They fit right, easy to slip on, I wear them for work/walking around and for hiking. I keep them loose when walking around and I tighten them when hiking. This is my second pair and I like them a lot. I have a high arch. I would buy them again. Only problem is the sole wear out quickly.

From the trail to town
I love these shoes! I have owned 3 pairs now. I was more of a fan of the SpeedCross 3's but they are so similar, you couldn't really tell a difference. They are great for dirt, mud, and wet trail conditions. Only thing they don't do well is wet granite slabs, but you won't find slick granite rock very often, anyways. They look so good and are so comfortable I wear them everywhere, around town, climbing approaches, everything. For a trail run example, I wear them when I go run the East trail on Grandeur Peak. It is a 6 mile trail with 2,600 feet of elevation gain, as you can imagine, It is very steep. They perform extremely well both going up and down the trail, I love the traction and with the added advantage of being GORE-TEX these babies are amazing and can handle pretty much anything. I'm between a 9 - 9.5 for my regular fit. I went with a size 9, they were a little tight at first but after two runs they fit really well. Highly recommended. Great First Impression
I've only been running with these a couple times but I am very happy with the initial results. I bought these looking for a lightweight waterproof shoe for winter trail running. I love the tread, it's amazing! Really grippy in almost all directions, this tears through snow, slush, crud, dirt, gravel, and probably sand (don't know yet, but I suspect). I am unsure of how the gore tex liner will breathe once the summer sets in, but for right now they are toasty. I do wish they had better tread on the far back portion of the heel, as this can make for an interesting descent on a REALLY steep downhill.

Supreme Trail Runners
A great product from Salomon. This is a fantastic shoe for the trail, whether you're going for a run, a day hike or thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. They're very reliable and don't break down easily, and the tread is phenomenal. They grip to any surface, including rocks, dirt, mud, or anything else you might encounter. They're definitely more suited to outdoor adventures, but even work well as an everyday athletic shoe as they are very light and comfortable. Although the GoreTex does make them feel a bit stiff out of the box, once they're broken in they feel great, and will keep your feet dry in anything less than a huge rainstorm. The Quicklace system works well and is more convenient than traditional laces. Awesome for someone looking for a light trail/hiking shoe with great tread. I do wish there were more color options, but that's about the only thing I don't love about these shoes. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a lighter option vs. full hiking boots, but doesn't want to sacrifice performance or comfort.

Great weather resistant running shoes
The shoes kept my feet dry and warm, with a thin runner's sock, on cold rainy/snowy days; and, cool and dry on warm rainy days. The shoes also allow enough breathability no matter the wet weather conditions.

Great for trail, not for street
I run about 5 miles a day usually. I live in Seattle so i need something waterproof to run in. Doesn't look like there even is such thing as a just a waterproof jogging shoe, the only thing i could find are waterproof trail running shoes. I guess shoe makers think it only rains in the woods? I figured I'd give trail runners a try since half my run is street and the other half trail. On the street: Aweful, these are not a hybrid shoe. The hard sole adds a big increase in shock, was hard on my knees. On wet streets they can get slippery. On the trail: Wonderful, decreased the shock impact, good grip, good support on uneven terrain Waterproof: A true waterproof shoe, I ran in rain and hit a lot of puddles, also just wore around town in the rain. No water touched my feet, excellent waterproofing. Look and feel: Excellent look, feel comfortable just walking. I don't like the laces, they don't distribute tightness well. These shoes are stiff. They are going to require a lot of breaking in before they are comfortable but i suspect once you do they will be very comfortable. I definitely wouldn't do any long hikes or runs without breaking them in early. I did a 5 mile run right out the box and it killed my feet. It has an elevated heel on it which made me run more on the balls of my feet and hurt my valves and back because i'm not use to it. Spend a good 10-15 miles breaking these in before you try and put them to the test. I'd recommend these shoes for short wet hikes or runs on trail only, or just for a waterproof shoe to wear in the rain. These were definitely not made for hard surface running.

You might consider trying the Inov8 Roclite 282s. I also live in the Seattle area and I've had a pair of the Roclite 282s for a little over a year now. Overall I've been really impressed with them, though I don't run in them, they've been excellent as every day walking shoes. After a year of daily use there's very little real wear and tear. They've still got plenty of tread and they're still waterproof. I just picked up a pair of Speedcross 4 GTXs and it definitely feels like the Speedcross 4s have less cushion than what I'm used to in my Roclite 282s. So while I think you may still run into the same issues as the Speedcross 4s when it comes to traction on pavement, the Roclite 282s should be a bit better about absorbing the shock. I ended up upgrading to the Speedcross 4s because I've always wanted a pair, not because my Roclites actually needed to be replaced. Anyway, I appreciate the review. My Speedcross 4 GTXs are a little tighter than I was expecting, so I thought I'd hit the old interwebs and see what people had to say about them stretching as they break in. I'm guessing they won't stretch much, so I may bite the bullet and send them back in for a pair a half size larger.

Brooks makes some road shoes that are GTX. Maybe give them a try. Probably better for a guy with a build and needs like yours.
