Say hello to soft ground.

With a bevvy of S-Lab options, you're probably wondering what the SG in the Salomon S-Lab Wings 8 SG Trail Running Shoe stands for, so we'll cut to the chase. The SG is short for Soft Ground, which means these hot tamales were designed specifically for running on soft and slick technical terrain. However, much like its siblings, this shoe features Salomon's Sensifit and Endofit construction, which consists of an internal fit sleeve that hugs your foot in all the right places as to encourage a seamless, hot-spot-free fit and feel.

Additionally, the S-Lab Wings 8 SG touts a Quicklace system and breathable, anti-debris mesh, which ultimately provides a comfortable climate for your foot and prevents the build-up of moisture in your socks. A protective toe cap safeguards your metatarsals from the ever-present trail obstacles, while the Profeel film doubles down on your trail-side protection. Perhaps most importantly, though, the two-piece midsole cultivates the right kind of softness underfoot for shock attenuation and energetic, return response so you're not left with sore feet and dead legs by the end of your run. The Descent control design offers ample grip and rip when running downhill, and the Contagrip outsole actually becomes more tacky when wet.

Salomon - S-Lab Wings 8 SG

Having run in Salomon's since 2005 I've lost count of how many pairs. With few exceptions one thing has been common, they simply fit my feet and I'd be lost without the speedlaces.

The S-Lab Wings SG model is likely my favorite all-around Salomon going back to V2. I've run in many pairs and versions of:

S-Lab Ultra
Speed Cross

Of these, the Ultra SG is most similar to the S-Lab Wings SG. If you are a fan of the Ultra SG but need something with more under foot protection, this is your shoe.

The S-Lab Wings SG model has plenty of cushion for longer journeys and I've run both the Bryce fifty miler and Tushar 100k with no issues. I'd characterize the mid-sole as precise feeling and medium to semi-rigid.
The out-sole as with all soft ground (SG) models is grippy and is more durable on the model 8 than previous versions. At this price point this is a welcome improvement.

The upper is form fitting and minimal, there is little to no padding sitting atop the foot. As with all S-Lab models the fit is precise and I'd encourage you to try them on, as they are snug going on but comfortable once they are on (assuming they fit your foot shape).

For those unfamiliar with this range of shoes, the inner shoe wraps the foot like a sock so it's important to find the correct size.
I've come to size S-Labs so that I can confidently begin my runs with the laces loose, allowing my feet to settle in before snugging and storing the laces. I believe one of the knocks on the speedlace system is improper fit leading to over tightening of the system and collapsing ones arches.

If you want a more traditional feeling shoe with the benefits of speedlace, I'd recommend the non-S-Lab Wings or the Sense range over the S-Lab's. They are for lack of better description floppier, looser, with more padding in the upper.

no regrets all grip and go!

Got these last fall on sale and wow from the first run to yesterday's outing I am stoked. My previous pair were the salomon speedcross but of course that amazing sole with its spikey spikes is just not built to last. I was looking for a shoe that can handle my south central pa crazy technical trails as well as long runs on the mountain roads that wore out the speedcross's. I am roughly six months in, winter has arrived and the shoes have not let me down. Whether it is going up a greasy grass hill or descending a rocky section of the Appalachian Trail I cruise with confidence! Sizing is true as well. Get them on sale and get going.
