Why We Like The S/Lab Ultra 3 Trail Running Shoe
Salomon developed the S/Lab Ultra 3 Trail Running Shoe with ultra-runner Francois D'haene. Designed specifically for trail racing, the third generation of the Ultra features a reduced weight, improved breathability, and cushioning to enhance the long-distance comfort that has made the shoe so well known. A SensiFit upper cradles the foot while an EndoFit internal sleeve hugs the foot for a secure fit. A high-rebound midsole delivers energy return while Energy Save PU enhances cushioning through the miles. Finally, the Ultra 3 features Salomon's most versatile and highly durable sole, ContaGrip MA, for reliable traction on wet, dry, hard, and loose surfaces.

Design flaws - would not recommend them
- I've used it several times
- True to size
I bought these shoes more than a month ago. I did a long research in the internet before I bought these shoes and I really wanted to like them, but the more I use them, the less I like them. They have three design flaws: - They destroy the color of your socks. Really? - Shoe laces are impossible to get in the pocket. - You have to tighten very the laces of the shoes. Because the material under the laces is very thin, the piece of metal where you pass the laces causes a lot of pain on my foot. When you pay US$180 for what are supposed to be some of the best trail running shoes in the market, you expect the best, and not three design flaws. I would not recommend this product.

Many miles and many days on the trail in these shoes. While I love their traction and stability on the trail, I get most days on a chipped wood trail near the house, they work equally well on both. I have also recommended these to friends and have talked with lots of big trail runners about these shoes in particular and how well they perform. Sizing; true to size.

I haven't had a pair of Salomon for quite some years due to their usually narrow fit but I decided to give the Ultra 3s a try having read many of the glowing reviews and man are the good! The sock-like fit is comfortable and secure with enough room in the toes area. Excellent grip too, just marginally less grippy than Vibram Megagrip on my last pair (Arcteryx Norvan LD) but sufficient on my usual trails that range from rocky road to technical, sandy downhills. Great job Salomon!

Two Steps Forward/ Half Step Back
First off, this is by far the best version of the S/Lab Ultra. Finally an upper that breathes and doesn't break down prematurely. Taking off the "sensifit wings" really helped to shave off significant weight off the ultra. My favorite update to the S/lab ultra 3 is the upper, in previous versions the upper would get very hot and hold water inside after creek crossing. The upper breathes and lets water out to help your foot to stay dry and cool on the hottest and wettest trails. The fit is very similar to the previous versions but with a slightly wider toe box, they do feel a touch long (maybe a 1/4 size) but that seems like a good thing for a shoe that is designed to run the distance. The midsole feels just a touch more responsive, so great for picking up speed but not a high cushion hoka feel by any means. I think this shoe really shines around the 30 to 50 mile distance but just doesn't have enough cushion for me for longer distances. Overall I am super happy with the updates; however, this is the first shoe I have ever had my Achilles tendon blister in. The debris collar digs straight into the Achilles, so just wear taller socks. This Achilles blistering really drops the shoe a touch as it would have been very easy to make that material soft and not putting a seam right where your Achilles tendon is.

Hi all- has the midsole been changed at all between the 2 and the 3, or is the only change in the upper? Is the new upper the same mesh as the S lab sense 8's? Also, just FYI, 290g for the 3 is not lighter than the 2 ;) Wish it was... Thx!
