Quest 4D 3 GTX Backpacking Boot

Taking cues from Salomon's renowned trail running shoes, the Quest 4D 3 GTX Women's Backpacking Boot brings together waterproof construction, serious comfort, and lightweight durability in a trail-dominating, summit-seeking package. While the boot is lightweight, the construction isn't thanks to an abrasion-resistant synthetic upp that is lined with a waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex Performance Comfort membrane to reduce puddles, rain, and muddy trails from obstacles to mere curiosities. A non-marking Contagrip outsole will give you plenty of grip and protection, while Salomon's 4D Advanced Chassis serves up loads of stability and support.

Even when the going gets rough, the molded EVA midsole, Ortholite sockliner, and heel foam cushioning give your feet protection from rocks and roots. Rubber heel and toe caps offer extra durability and protection, and the Quest's gusseted tongue reduces pressure points and keeps dirt and pebbles out of your boot. After all this, the Quest weighs under 1.5 pounds per boot, so you'll be able to move quickly and comfortably over long distances without feeling like your legs and hip flexors are going to fall off.

    • Burly backpacking boot boasts unparalleled comfort and protection
    • Gore-Tex Performance Comfort is waterproof and highly breathable
    • Moisture-wicking lining and Ortholite footbed maintain inner climate
    • Dual-density EVA midsole offers long-lasting comfort and support

    So comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I didn't have to break in these boots before taking them out on the trail. They were so comfortable yet supportive at the same time. I didn't find them to be too heavy either. Waterproof and kept my feet dry on a 6 hour rainy hike. Excited to take them on some longer treks!

    Broke within a month

I was so excited to wear these boots but can't recommend them due to shoddy construction. I wore them lightly a couple times over a period of a month and one day the rivets of the lace holder just broke and pulled out completely. I don't know what it's made of but it absolutely should not be breaking like that for the price. I'm really disappointed.

      Great for Wider Feet!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This boot has a wider toe box, which is awesome! It is nearly impossible for me to find shoes/boots that have a wide enough toe box for my feet. Wore them straight out the box over 6 miles in rugged mtn terrain and had no rubbing or shore feet. Walked through very, very wet terrain while raining as well and feet were dry. Overall, if you need more space in your toe box and want a decent boot, they are worth it. My husband has the men's version and he's put some solid use in them and they are holding up.

      Rugged Comfort for Relentless Trails

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had these boots for two years. They came highly recommended for plantar fasciitis, and they've been as good as advertised. They are completely waterproof, comfortable out of the box, and clean up as good as new even after a few hundred miles of wear. The materials are durable and the waterproofing has held up flawlessly. I recently submerged my foot on a loose puncheon and only took a tiny bit of water where it lapped over the back collar. I have not needed to add any special insoles or heel cups. They are perfect. The boots do run a half size large in women's sizes. We hike in rugged, ever-changing terrain and weather conditions in New England, and these boots have held up to everything thrown their way. From the Presidentials in New Hampshire to lengthy treks in the ADKs, they have been comfortable and dry. The traction is excellent and, although they can be a little warm on the hottest days, they breathe extremely well and stay dry inside. If you're looking for a durable, waterproof, all around hiking shoe, this is a great choice!

      Super comfortable boots

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my second pair of these boots because I loved the first pair so much. They feel broken in from day 1, no blisters ever. My feet stay dry on the wettest backpacking trips. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE these boots.

      Best hiking boots EVER

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have never been so impressed with a pair of hiking boots. Never had issues breaking them in, and, I just returned from Norway. We hiked Trolltung, Preikestolen, and Kjerag, all within four days, and never once had a blister or aching feet. I have already said goodbye to my Merrell boots, and will be a lifelong customer of Solomon.

      The best boots

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I love these boots! They do run a little big, so I went a half size down from my normal size and they fit me perfectly. They support my foot and ankle perfectly, making me feel secure while hiking. They are also lightweight, so excellent for backpacking.

      Great boots

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Got these for my wife after a backpacking trip left her feet torn up by boots that didn't fit right. She has had good luck with Salomon running shoes and I have used the men's version of these boots for years, so we figured they would work pretty well. So far, she is very pleased. No hot spots and they're sturdy enough for backpacking while being light enough to hike fast. She's a fan.

      Dry Feet!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've taken these boots on three hikes so far - two with pretty intense elevation gain and one in the snow. They've done great! I have had blisters on my ankles from breaking them in but other than that they are super comfortable, have great traction and my feet have been dry and happy! I definitely recommend these.

Wish I could give 10 stars

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I needed boots for a spur of the moment backpacking trip, so I bought these, tried them on briefly, then headed out for five days of hiking over snowy volcanic fields, crossing streams, and scrambling over strewn boulders. I can honestly say I have never had a better shoe experience. The sizing was right on, and is consistent with other Salomon shoes I've worn. Even with having only worn then for approximately 30 seconds before taking them out on an extended trip, I experienced no blisters, hot spots, or anything else that typically comes along with shoes that haven't been broken in. The lacing system keeps your feet feeling secure without suffocating them. The sole is stiff for stability over uneven terrain, but somehow my feet weren't sore when I got to the end of the day. I tested the waterproof-ness by wading through countless small streams, and every day my feet remained dry. They're quite warm, which was great for when we were hiking over the snow, but I most likely won't be taking them on any desert trips. Moral of the story - these boots are amazing, and I would highly recommend for almost any alpine hiking and backpacking.

      Best boots

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These boots are AMAZING! They are light, comfy, and ready to go right off the bat. They run true to size in my opinion, but I do like wearing thicker socks. If you are a thin sock person, maybe go down a half size. I have been wearing them on short hikes, the big test is coming up in July! Once I'm back from my backpacking trip, I will update my review.

      LOVEEEEEE!!!!!!! They Do Run Big.

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got these for my girlfriend as a gift. This is what she said:
"I love everything about these shoes. I loved my keen boots I had before this, but they ended up falling apart on me after only one major backpacking trip. I was looking for something that was comfortable, not too heavy, and had lots of ankle support. I am prone to twisting my ankle and wanted to make sure I had a shoe that would help with that. The minute I got them I knew they were going to work. They had no break in time and were comfortable from the get go. They were a good weight that I have had no problem hiking with. They have great support and stay tight throughout the hike. Plus they are so cute! I did go down a half a size and would recommend going down a half to a whole size"

      Your Next Backpacking Boot

The Quest 4d 3 is all about walking comfort, with technologies to reduce fatigue over the duration of your treks. Light and cushioned with running shoe adapted technology, yet supportive enough for backpacking, this boot helps you get to the next camp site with happier feet. As a Salomon employee, I have a pair of these in my closet for my longer treks. For more info, checkout the video below:

        Very very pleased!

I am a devoted Keene wearer but was searching for the same type of comfort with a greater level of support for rocky surfaces and old ankles. My gear head Nick steered me in the right direction! These boots were immediately comfortable with a sweet foot bed and true to size with a medium wool sock. I have already water tested them and my feet were dry and warm.

I want to know the length of the 6.5-sized insoles.
