Seek and ye shall find.

Taking cues from Salomon's renowned trail running shoes, the Quest 4D 2 GTX Women's Backpacking Boot brings together waterproof construction, serious comfort, and lightweight durability in a trail-dominating, summit-seeking package. While the boot is lightweight, the construction isn't, starting with the abrasion-resistant synthetic upper, which is lined with a waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex Performance Comfort membrane to reduce puddles, rainstorms, and muddy trails from obstacles to mere curiosities. A non-marking Contagrip outsole will give you plenty of grip and protection, while Salomon's 4D Advanced Chassis serves up loads of stability and support.

Even when the going gets rough, the molded EVA midsole, Ortholite sockliner, and heel foam cushioning give your feet protection from rocks and roots. Rubber heel and toe caps offer extra durability and protection, and the Quest's gusseted tongue reduces pressure points and keeps dirt and pebbles out of your boot. After all this, the Quest weighs under 1.5 pounds per boot, so you'll be able to move quickly and comfortably over long distances without feeling like your legs and hip flexors are going to fall off.

Best Boots I Have Yet to Own

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have had these for a while now and every time I wear them I still go, "wow I love these boots." They are not too heavy. They have awesome ankle support. They look cute and not disgusting after walking a lot of miles. And, they're the only boots I have owned that don't rub my pinky toe weird. 10/10

Run a bit big

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Pretty lightweight, but I feel as if I could go down even a smaller size after already going from an 8 to a 71/2, there's lots of toe room!

Happy feet!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5'11"
  • Weight: 145lbs

These shoes are flawless, period. Like many others have said before me, these are absolutely the hiking boots you need to buy. I've owned an absurd amount of hiking boots in my life and always struggled with fit, waterproofing and durability, all of which these boots excel at. A feature I especially like is how the little hook you put your laces on when tightening them up is riveted to hold the lace in place so no slipping while you are trying to get the perfect fit! I was also surprised how lightweight these boots are. By far, my favorite feature is how they require little to no break in time. Right after I got these, I immediately put them on and went on a 13 mile strenuous hike in the Tetons. NO blisters, NO chaffing, No discomfort. I have not tested the waterproofing of these boots other than splashing in a few puddles, but feels dry so far. Looking to many more miles with these bad boys!! !

Light waterproof sturdy hiking boot

I have never been a tall hiking boot person. Previously I've only hiked in trail running shoes. But these have converted me. They are light enough where I don't feel like my feet have huge cumbersome rocks strapped to them. They're waterproof and warm enough to wear in the winter. I don't mind splashing through creeks in the summer or shoulder seasons.
These are my go-to winter hiking boot too. With leggings, gaitors, and microspikes I can go pretty much anywhere.

And surprisingly - they don't make my feet look huge either. BIG benefit

    Comfortable and waterproof to boot!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 9

Purchased on a bit of a whim just before an 11 day backpacking trip in the Lofoten Islands of Norway in September, and boy am I glad I did. I've never hiked anywhere before where heading to higher ground didn't result in less wet conditions. These boots held up like a champ- it took 7 days of consistent near-submerging before my toes got even the slightest bit damp. Amazingly comfortable, too, with no break-in period. Great product!

    Great fit, not waterproof

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

I really wanted to love these boots. I've been searching for a replacement for my ASOLO's, which just don't have a wide enough toe box for me. I stumbled across these Salomon's and the review were great: very little break in required, wide toe box, and a good grippy sole. So I decided to give these a try when they were on sale.

I used them for two hikes. The first was a 6 mile trek around Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park in which the weather was perfect. The fit was perfect; I had no blisters at the end of the hike, and my toes had room to breathe. The second was a moderate 10 mile hike around Emma-Matilda Lake in which the weather was less than ideal. It rained and hailed for most of the 5 hour hike. In a way, I was glad it rained; it gave me the chance to test out the waterproofing. The first thing that got wet were my toes, which was a big red flag. By the end of the hike, my feet were numb and I could feel water sloshing around in the bottom the boots.

I could recommend these boots if you are going to use them for strict hiking with no rain, but I work in the mountains with unpredictable weather. So for the price, I would not recommend these until Salomon can get the waterproofing down.

    Great Boots

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

These boots broke in easily and blister free, yet they are still stiff after being used quite a bit. They are a little heavy for what they are, but extremely comfortable and supportive. They run true to size and have a pretty standard width. For being waterproof they breathe well and aren't too hot on warmer days. I'm interested to see how they do in the winter for walking my dog in the hills.

    First hiking boots

I've always hiked in running/trail shoes and finally wanted to invest in a pair of hiking boots for longer, technical hikes and backpacking trips. I did a ton of research and settled on this pair. They looked a little aggressive out of the box, but they are light, tough in all conditions and make me feel confident hiking through boulders, stream crossings, snow and loose rocks. Despite the burly appearance, these boots fit great - snug in all the right places, didn't take much breaking in. And they look pretty good too which is a nice bonus.

      First hiking boots

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 7.5
      • Height: 5'3"
      • Weight: 132lbs

I bought these boots in January and where I live the mountains aren't safe for hiking right at the moment. So thinking that I needed to break them in and get ready for my spring trecking, I began wearing them as soon as they arrived..... WOW, WAS I WRONG - they are so comfy, do not need any breaking in and have been wonderful in our snowy, wet, cold weather. (I did experience a bit of calf discomfort, but realigned the tongue and that problem was solved!) I have been building a house and used these boots for tromping around on our muddy, frozen property and my feet have been happily supported and warm during the many hours out in the wet and cold conditions. I bought the 7.5 and my toes have a bit of space in them. I got them 1/2 size bigger on purpose for thick socks. However, I don't think I really need them as the boots are so well insulated. I have to admit, for so much boot, they are EXTREMELY LIGHT WEIGHT and my feet and legs don't get tired tromping around in them. I am extremely impressed and excited to own these. I would do it again - I found my faves!

      Amazing Shoe

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 9
      • Height: 5'4"
      • Weight: 140lbs

I have a wide foot, so finding a shoe that is womens and fit my larger foot was crucial. These are so comfortable and very lightweight compared to my older shoes. The gortex has been wonderful, I've already hiked in rain and through puddles and haven't had a single issue. I didn't know I would love these shoes so much but they've been awesome.

Also, there was no phase of wearing them in. I was able to put them on and head right out into the field without any blisters or painful feet.

These boots ROCK! Excellent field boots!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size

I bought these boots in anticipation of a geology field camp. The thing about geologists is that we go through hell and high water to get to an interesting formation with complete disregard for cacti, scree, trails, or property lines. Our class hiked 8-12 miles per day, six days a weeks, off-trail through really the nastiest possible Montana scrub, climbed cliffs, and forded streams. Some days we had more that 4,000 feet of elevation gain. Out of the 92-person camp, only myself and the one other person with these same boots had their boots look BRAND NEW after six weeks of geology shenanigans. That says a lot!

I've also worn them on backpacking trips around the Red River Gorge, and they did a good job of stabilizing my ankles as I hauled around a 40-pound pack.

I have low-volume feet with a narrow heel and wide toe box, and these boots have a perfect fit. Seriously, they make me feel invincible. No stubbed toes, no cramped toes, no blisters, no soreness, and my ankles were well supported. Not much flex in the sole, but that actually worked in these boots' favor for the uses I needed them for - the heavy-duty support kept my feet from getting fatigued on rough terrain. I can set my feet down anywhere and feel assured that they won't slip. The two-stage lacing system does a good job of balancing the needs of my wide fore-foot and very narrow ankle. Excellent cushioning, but not so much that I felt disconnected from the ground. They're as breathable as you can get with a waterproof boot, and keep my feet 100% free from speargrass and cactus spines.

I found that they ran true to size, and feel that they would really be adjustable to fit any kind of foot shape. I lace them fairly tight, so they would definitely fit a higher-volume or wider foot as well.

The price initially gave me sticker shock, but they're worth every penny.

If you're just doing light hiking these boots might be overkill. I wear my Vasque Talus boots for ordinary day hikes. However, if you have problem feet or need heavy-duty support and durability in a (relatively) lightweight package, these rate a 6 out of 5.

      Great boot!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 9

Very comfortable out of the box. The boot has great stability and support. I would recommend to a friend.

I just bought the men's version and can attest that this is truly a hiking boot for "REAL" Hiking's must be sold out non shown, I may have to find someplace to buy a second pair before they all disappear for good..nothing compares at this price point.
