Great Support and Feel! A Little Narrow

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 11.5
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 250lbs

I needed a pair of boots to replace my 2 year old Merrell boots and wanted to try a pair of Saloman's. I love the extra height and ankle support on these boots for the added stability. Also has an extra section of thicker rubber to help protect the toe. I can't wait to take them on a hike and see how they perform on the AT. I can lace up a pair of Merrell or Keen boots without any width issues, these are a little more narrow than the other brands and will take some breaking in. Something to keep in mind before hitting the trails if you have wide feet like me.

    Dry Feet are Happy Feet

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 11
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 175lbs

These are the gold standard for backpacking boots. Lightweight comfort with the support and protection you need for the long haul. The Gore-Tex membrane keeps your feet dry while still allowing them to breath on after hours on your feet. The over the ankle design allows you to carry heavy loads with confidence. The Contagrip sole gives you excellent traction on varying terrain.
While these are not winter boot they also perform well in the snow when paired with a heavier wool sock. They are true to size.

    Love them

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 12
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 195lbs

These were my first pair of Salomons and i love them. The have the support i need in a hiking boot. They are light, and waterproof just as advertised. It took about a month to break in and once the do they feel amazing.

Love my Quest 4D 3 GTX

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 12.5
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 210lbs

This was my first Saloman boots. Took it out for 11 mile hike on rough terrains and it performed great. The combination of light weight, excellent support, water proofing and cushioning made this shoes perfect for me. The only negative about this boot is it's not available in wide sizes and it was necessary to size up by 1 size. Excellent quality and very comfortable. As always BackCountry.com ordering and shipping experience was superb :)

    Out of the Box Perfection

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

I debated for months over the mid/high and gtx/non. I couldn't be happier that I chose these boots. I wore them for a mile around the neighborhood and then decided to test them out with 20+ miles in the Adirondacks. It was a hot day, but if you know the 'daks that doesn't mean dry. Mud, puddles, stream crossings were no match for these. A sock change halfway helped ensure that my feet were happy. No blisters, rubbing, or hot spots. I'm so glad I picked these up!

    Great Boots!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 11.5
    • Height: 6'2"
    • Weight: 190lbs

    Fantastic boot! Love it!

Tested out the boots with a 15 mile hike in Glacier National Park. They worked great. Waterproofing worked well. The boots feel firm and sturdy.

I would recommend a brief break-in period. My feet ached a bit after the hike, but no blisters. The next day, I did a 6 mile hike and the boots felt much better.

If you have hot feet, these boots may not be for you. The boots aren't as breathable as I like. With milder temps ~60F, they feel great. But around ~80F or ~90F, your feet will get hot. I still enjoy the boot, even with my hot feet.

My feet are a size 12, but had to go down to a size 11.5.

    Comfortable!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 5'6"
    • Weight: 160lbs

I'm usually not big on hiking boots. Most of my hiking has been done in chaco flip flops or trail runners. That said, I'm going to Kilimanjaro and was told I HAVE to have a mid-height, waterproof boot. I tried the Vasque Sundowner, but they didn't fit my feet well and gave me blisters and toe bang. I went with these, and they feel more like a beefed up trail runner than a mid-high hiking boot. They're flexible enough to be comfortable, but still plenty supportive. the grip has been sufficient on icey sections of high alpine trails, or mud down low. I've only used them on a few hikes but so far so good! If anything changes drastically over the next ~50 miles, I'll put it here!

    Great Boot-Not for Wide Feet

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 11.5
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 260lbs

I ordered this boot knowing it is made in Europe, and narrow-cut. I hoped I could fit in it. I have a 10.5-11.5 EE foot. Sadly, I didn't fit in it. It looked and felt spectacular. I hope they make wider versions one day.

    Best Backpacking Boots

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 185lbs

I'm on my second pair of these. I put the first pair through hundreds if not thousands of miles over the past few years. They held up crazy well and are some of the most comfortable boots I've ever had.

The new Quest 3s seem to have an updated lug patter and provide great traction. I think they must have also reinforced the ankle cuff area. I've noticed that they even have a slightly better fit and are a bit more supportive. That could be because my old ones were beat to hell, but it definitely seems like they made a few minor upgrades without changing a beloved boot too much.

I've sized up a 1/2 size on both pairs. Gives me plenty of room for a thick sock and I'm not experiencing any heel slippage. As for the GTX liner, it does what you expect.

These boots are the best out there, I'll be back for pair #3 if these ever kick the bucket!

    Brown county hiker

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 9.50M
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 170lbs

I loved these boots when I first got them. They are rugged, well made, and light weight. Then they started rubbing a spot on the outside of the ball of my foot. There was a ridge on the lining near the foot bed on the right boot. I thought this was a defect so returned and was sent another pair. The new pair had the same ridge on the inside lining on both boots this time. Returned for a refund this time. I wanted to love these boots but they just kept rubbing a raw spot on the outside of my feet.

True to size, great arch & ankle support

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 10.5 D
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 180lbs

I have had two pairs of the Solomon 4D 2 GTX boots and they have been excellent in terms of fit, arch support, ankle support, and durability. Few boots are as easy to lace up and adjust the foot box for best fit and support and then maintain tension while lacing the rest of the boot. When I know I will be bushwalking on very steep terrain the Solomon boots are the ones I wear. Few boots other than logger's boots, provide this level of support. The Solomon boots are the only ones I have found that do not require a break-in period but still provide excellent arch support. A small detail but the Solomon boot laces last the life of the boots and this is exceedingly rare these days.

    Salomon Quest 4D3

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 10.5
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 168lbs

I have a narrow foot, somewhere between a US size 10 and 11. So I ordered the 10.5, and it's perfect. There's lots of room in the toe box, but my feet don't slide around, even when hiking downhill. I have learned how to adjust the lacing for maximum comfort which is easy to do because the cleats allow you to adjust the tension in the forefoot independently from the ankle. Until I had been wearing them a few weeks, the stiff upper boot was chafing at the collar around my lower leg. Some thicker boot socks helped during break in, and now they are no longer necessary. They feel stable but not heavy. I'm pleased with my choice.

    Great boot, size down.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 7.5
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 155lbs

I bought these boots for both myself and my Girlfriend. We both had to size down. I normally wear a size8.5 in Salomon hiking/trail running shoes and had to size down to a 7.5. I have had the opportunity to hike in the desert through sand and on Slickrock as well as through the snow in the Wasatch range in Utah. The Contragrip sole has performed well in all conditions. The Gore-Tex keeps your feet from overheating while keeping them dry.

    These boots are so comfortable.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 8 1/2
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 155lbs

Had small problems with first pair, backcountry took them back with no problems. I swear the second pair feels more comfortable then first. I can’t wait to try out backpacking they are one of the strongest boots for the weight I ever owned.

      Amazing Boot

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 9.5 US
      • Height: 5'9"
      • Weight: 170lbs

Without getting too wordy, this boot hits the mark in every category. They are tough, warm (winter snow shoeing) and really really comfortable. All while feeling relatively light. The have literally added mileage to my hikes. There is slightly more room in the toe box than I am used to but I'm not swimming because of it. Water repels well and after wetting out feet were completely dry.

      Must have if you hike

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 12
      • Height: 6'3"
      • Weight: 220lbs

The shoes are amazing. They are comfortable to hike with, the longest hike I had with them so far is ~7 hours. They keep the feet dry and provide good traction (though in ice conditions you would want to get micro-spikes).
