Why We Like The Odyssey GTX Hiking Shoe

Salomon's Odyssey collection consists of footwear worthy of hiking trails longer than most countries, and the Men's Odyssey GTX Hiking Shoe is a lighter option equipped with GORE-TEX waterproofing for hiking longer trails whether it's wet and rainy or warm and sunny. Salomon welded the light, breathable upper to a protective toe cap for a seamless, smooth feel as well as toe-stubbing durability. Underfoot, the Odyssey sports a highly cushioned midsole that maintains comfort over long miles. A rockered profile promotes easy strides over technical terrain, and Contagrip rubber gives the traction needed for moving fast.

Great hiking shoes

I've worn these for about 30 miles of hiking so far. The first time they gave me a mild blister on my heel but I have had zero issues since. They are lightweight to the point that you don't even know you're wearing them. The cushion, traction and grip are better than expected. The toe box is wide and comfortable, yet the shoe still fit my standard-to-slightly narrow feet exceptionally well. The blue/gray color looks really good too. The shoelaces are too long but I'm not complaining.

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion! Maybe it's just me but I am not a fan of Salomon's shoe styling. I think they're a little dorky, but hey, that's like my opinion man. I can't dock them a star for that. I received these shoes two months after my second child was born, and he's had a host of medical issues, so unfortunately I have only been able to wear them in my garden and to the hospital. Kids are totally worth it though! That being said, these are seriously one of the most comfortable shoes on the planet. I liken them to a solid pair of steel toe boots that have been broken in. I could stand in them for hours and not realize they were still on my feet. The midsole is almost exactly what I'd look for in a hiking shoe, as it's cushion-y enough but still extremely supportive which will keep your feet and legs from fatiguing on those long days out in the wilderness. After walking through the paths in my garden and soaking all the plants over and over again, I can say that the waterproofing works extremely well. I've had my irrigation hose directly spray the toe and top of the shoe for a few seconds and my foot was still dry. My ankle, on the other hand, was drenched! One aspect I'd like to see change is the tread pattern. The uniform, small blocks are great for paved paths and hard packed trails. I would imagine Salomon made the tread this way to maximize your stride efficiency while out backpacking for a few days. I think for a do it all shoe, they've really isolated the Rocky Mountain/Sierra crew from the rest of the geographical US. Someone living in NW Oregon will have a completely different experience on these shoes than someone in Utah. That person might be able to use them for a month in the summer, compared to the Utahn, who could wear them all summer long and into the winter. This is where the Salomon Odyssey GTX loses its one star for me. People hiking in steep, rooty, damp, loamy dirt look elsewhere. I look forward to being able to take these out more in the Wasatch. The trails are getting drier and dustier here and I think this is the perfect time to really put these shoes through the ringer. Once my kids are feeling better and not spending so much time in the hospital, I'll revisit this review and give an update!

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. I have always been a huge salomon shoe fan. I have multiple pairs of salomon shoes everything thing from their boots to their light weight running shoes. Just like all of their other shoes this fit true to size. They do seem to be slightly wider however and give your toes just a little more breathing room. As soon as I got them my wife talked me into doing a 15 mile trailrun/hike to break them in and test them out. Right out of the box they were super comfortable and I didn't have a single issue the whole time. They were slightly heavier than my S-lab trail running shoes but they were still great to run in. They have great traction and were defiantly waterproof as we had a few muddy spot and creeks to cross on our run. I really think these are a do everything type of trail shoe. They are light enough to run in and are sturdy enough to backpack in. Overall I would highly recommend these shoes to anyone looking for a great hiking shoe. They seem to be built very well. I have put over 50 miles on them and they still look new once I clean them up. I do with they had the same laces other Salomons have but I had no issues with the current laces. Overall I would give them 5 stars and would buy them again without thinking about it.

Love this hiking shoe!

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. The Salomon Odyssey GTX is an extremely comfortable and lightweight waterproof hiking shoe - works great for my hiking and backpacking needs. So far I've taken them to the Eastern Sierra and Yosemite National Park area, for day hikes and on a multi-day backpacking trip. They held up great, no blisters or problem points. Super comfortable for a waterproof shoe. FYI - I wear a size 10.5M men's and the sizing is true to fit for me. Sometimes I have trouble finding a shoe that works for my feet but looks like they designed the shoe to have more room in the toe area. After hiking several miles, having the extra room is great. Good grip on the soles, I was able to scramble across loose and wet granite without slipping or sliding. So far impressed with the durability, put some miles on them in the Sierra Nevada backcountry, a few creek crossings, bug spray etc and are still holding up strong. They look normal enough to wear off the trail too. They've got some extra cushioning, so they're comfortable to wear out and my custom orthotics fit into these no problem. Overall I'm very happy with these hiking shoes. I have several backpacking trips planned this summer and feel confident taking these out for all the trips. Much less clunky or heavy than my usual high-ankle hiking boots. Nice to have a lighter option to reach for in warmer months. Highly recommend.
