Bonatti Pro WP Jacket

Designed to meet waterproof requirements for trail races and ultramarathons that require shell jackets while maintaining a light weight and breathable construction, the Salomon Bonatti Pro WP Jacket will be a reliable partner when you set off on the trail for hours at a time. Its Pertex Shield technology and 2.5-layer membrane keeps out moisture from rain, snow, and whatever other precipitation you encounter along the way, while the snug-fitting hood with an elastic gaiter keeps your fit secure and your vision free from obstruction in technical terrain. To keep you cool and comfortable as you run, this jacket not only has a breathable construction but also features a Smart Vent front zipper, which keeps both sides of the jacket in place while the zipper is down, so you can let in some cool air without having your jacket billow in the wind. Another smart feature of this jacket is the extra volume in the back of the jacket that allows you to wear it over a running pack or hydration vest, so you can keep all of your gear and valuables dry in wet weather. And when the clouds disappear and you've finally got some blue skies, you can stuff the jacket into its own front pocket and stash it in that same pack until the rain comes back again.

  • Ultralight running jacket for weather protection on long runs
  • Windproof and waterproof construction protects you from the elements
  • Meets waterproof requirements for ultramarathons and trail races
  • Snug elastic hood stays in place for optimal visibility on the trail
  • Smart Vent front zipper keeps your jacket in place when unzipped
  • Extra volume in the back lets you wear the shell over a running pack
  • Packs down into its own chest pocket for easy on-trail storage
  • MotionFit design allows your jacket to move with you as you run

I’ve loved this piece of gear and it’s something I throw in my pack every time I go whether or not it’s just for the day or for several. It’s lightweight and and takes up very little space in the pack so it’s a no brainer. I’ve used this jacket in heavy downpours and to help shed the wind and it’s performed flawlessly for both. It does a reasonably good job as far as breathability goes (as good as any waterproof jacket does). It’s a great option for hiking, trail running, or even just everyday use around town. I wear a size medium and found it to be true to size and I love the fit of this jacket. Comfortable but not too tight or baggy. I would consider it to be fitted.

This is the best windbreaker I’ve owned. This thing is so light weight, it’s super breathable, and the fit is sick. Super modern fit, contours well on my frame and looks slimming. Very nice accent of yellow on the green. I’ve taken this thing down to snow canyon in southern Utah and hiked up Angel’s Landing on a cold, windy, rainy day. Kept me warm without over heating and repelled all th rain off. Only downside is there’s only one pocket on the chest, I’m used to more pockets but will adjust, it’s lightweight so you can move quickly, not designed for tons of pockets to load up and weigh you down.

I've become a quick believer in Pertex after using the Bonatti Pro WP Jacket by Salomon. I hail from the White Mountains of NH and while I may have only tested this out in winter so far, I am very impressed by its functionality. I tend to be pretty particular with the jackets I buy because of how fast and hard conditions can tend to be in the White Mountains. While this jacket might not necessarily be meant for winter, its been great to see how well it has adapted to some of my needs. Things like breathable and resistance. Especially on the uphill in winter, you need something that is going to protect you from the elements but also not to be too much. This jacket is that regardless of the season. It is also highly resistant and waterproof despite being pertex. I am pleasantly surprised with the result of how waterproof it is despite having been snowed and rained on. Lastly, I will just say I love the fit of it. Being much into hiking and trail running, I love jackets that conform close to your body and don't cause too much extra fabric coming out in odd places.

When light and fast is the name of the game it can be difficult to make gear selections that fit the objective and still cover your ten essentials while running. From missions into the mountains to training runs during the shoulder and Winter months, this jacket is an essential piece to your kit. Living in the pacific northwest, it is raining, snowing, and blowing wind more often than not, and likewise I just do not leave the house without some sort of jacket. Previous to picking up the Bonatti Pro I was running with the Patagonia Houdini, and while I do love that option for its packability, its repellency is not to be tested. The Bonatti Pro checks all of the boxes (and more) for me when it comes to an ultra lightweight shell. The storable chest pocket design has almost become standard for shells of this caliper, and the Bonatti Pro makes good use of it. If you are familiar with the above mentioned shell, you will know that the material is dangerously thin, and while the Bonatti Pro is similar in functionality, the fabric used is notably more robust and therefore significantly more repellent. The only trade off here is that when stored into the chest pocket, the overall zipped package is a bit larger. That being said, a worthwhile trade off for the upgrade in material durability and repellency. The hood on this jacket seems to have received speckled reviews. The hood is designed with the outer roof (to collect and shed accumulation), but it has an inner elastic liner that situates itself against your forehead. The thought here is to keep the hood from bouncing and flying off while you are moving. Having taken this shell into 40kph winds, in a whiteout, while actively snowing, this liner absolutely does its job in keeping the hood in place. As previously mentioned, the material used for the Bonatti Pro is notably thicker than some of its competitors, but the reliable repellency is what really sold me on this shell. The first time I took this out it was raining steadily and my head, shoulders, and trunk stayed entirely dry. The rain beaded up on my shoulders as one would expect from a fully waterproof GTX jacket, but with all of the breathability and lightweight mobility of an ultra lightweight shell. To make a note regarding fit, I am incredibly picky when it comes to selecting apparel. I am 6'0", 150lbs and built like a rail. I like my clothes to be form fitting, and to be cut long and skinny. Salomon's clothing is known to run this way being a Euro brand, and the Bonatti Pro stays true to the long and slender cut. The medium reaches to my wrists but does not bunch up, the trunk does have some room (it is designed to go over your vest if need be, though I don't tend to run this way even when it is raining), but even with a bit of room it does not feel billowy or ill-fit. The length runs to below the waist which is ideal because it keeps run off away from your waist band. Fit is one of my top qualifiers in picking apparel and I end up passing over a lot of gear choices because of this, but the Bonatti Pro is a spot on fit. If you are a year 'round trail runner, a well suited shell is a nonnegotiable, and I would highly recommend the Bonatti Pro as an essential piece to your kit.
