Fast and efficient, it's the peregrine falcon of hiking shoes.

If you're more concerned with setting personal bests than lingering to enjoy the view, then the Salewa Men's Roller Mid GTX Hiking Shoe was made for you. Built with Salewa Take-Off technology and Vibram's Rollingait System, this hiking shoe is focused on speed, efficiency, and endurance above all else.

Take-Off technology facilitates the rapid, natural rolling motion of the foot during ascents and descents thanks to a slightly raised toe position and a rockered Vibram RGS outsole. The Vibram RGS outsole's curved profile supports the foot from initial touch-down with the ground all the way through your stride and increases contact area to promote a more fluid motion and optimized efficiency. Hip and knee flexation, which usually causes discomfort during descents, is reduced to help you keep going longer.

The Gore-Tex Extended Comfort membrane keeps water out when you splash through puddles or get caught in a storm, yet remains highly breathable so things don't get too swampy inside your shoe. Tough suede in the upper resists abrasion for increased durability, while stretch panels keep it from feeling too rigid. Cleansport NXT antimicrobial technology prevents the buildup of odor-causing microbes so your shoe stays fresh.

Very comfortable but sizing is small

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 11.5 and 12.0
    • Height: 6'2"
    • Weight: 220lbs

I ordered a pair of 11.5, my normal hiking boot size, even after reading the reviews that they ran small. When I got the boots, I put them on and the left boot fit like a glove. The right boot pushed on my little toe in such a way that it felt like there was a pin poking in it. I checked the inside of the boot for any stray protrusions, none found, loosened the laces all the way and tried again but the same pain happened. Needless to say, I was disappointed for not having ordered half a size larger, base on the reviews. I really liked the feel, the weight and look of the boot based on the one that fit so I ordered a half size larger. Two days later, when they arrived, I tried on the right boot first and it fit just right. I now realize that I should have known the left boot was too small on the first pair because when I put on the left boot it was not too tight and not too loose, it was just right. I have worn these boots everyday for about three weeks and they feel just as good at the end of the day as they do when I first put them on in the morning. There really was no break-in period. The lesson out of this for me is if there are more than two reviews on a pair of boots that say they run small, I need to order a half size larger or be willing to deal with the "reorder and send back dance".

    Uncomfortable

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 10.5
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 195lbs

I really wanted to love these shoes, but they were just too uncomfortable. Wore them around the house for a few hours and they had no arch support and my toes were getting squeezed. Overall seemed to be high quality.

Roller Mid GTX - Hard and Tight

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 11.5US
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 195lbs

I really wanted to love these boots. The features are fantastic, with a great vibram sole and traction pattern, Gore-Tex technology, and stylish too. But these boots did not do well for me. The foot bed was rock hard and actually made my right foot hurt while walking in it. And the design/shape is clearly designed for a very narrow thin foot. My big toes had the right amount of room, but the rest of the toebox takes a hard slant and cramps my outside two toes. Also, this boot runs super small. I typically wear 10.5US and had to size up to 11.5US just to get a pair to fit; even still, with how the boot is cut, the outside toes get crammed.
I think for the right person with slender and/or narrow feet these boot could be great; add some superfeet and you could have a winner. Unfortunately, that I wasn't the right person for this boot.
I give 3 stars because of the features, technology, and quality of the boot, and for the right person they will be perfect. But I think they really limited they buying audience to a handful of people who could benefit from this boot with a better, more well rounded foot design.
